TP triggered โ
@: 20466.70
...has just triggered our tight TP. We are now seeing an increasing rotation away from growth stocks and back to defensives - health and financials in particular are outperforming. If you're still SHORT, you can close a bit better (at 20455 / I'd close near current levels though). We see the expected profit taking in Nvidia and also see Tesla losing some of its strong earlier gains. Other chip stocks such as AMD, Broadcom and Qualcomm, which have been driving the Nasdaq 100 recently, are currently pulling it down.

We continue to see the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100 close to their ATH. We see slight concerns that Powell may scale back rate cut hopes in his testimony before Congress, which also led to a slight rise in the USD (and yields). I expect Powell to say that the Fed will cut rates soon (before the end of the year).
๐น Nasdaq (+0.25%) is trading slightly higher, but below the highs reached in pre-market trading. We set a tight TP โ
@: 20450.30 for our SHORT position (near break-even) and hope that concerns ahead of Powell's testimony will lead to some profit taking in the interest rate sensitive growth sector. Overall, however, I assume that Powell will not scale back his rate cut expectations, which could lead to further gains in the growth sector over the course of the day. We are also setting a fairly tight SL ๐ @: 20601.20.
๐น Chevron (- 0.3%) is trading slightly lower after a flat performance yesterday and BP shares are also under heavy pressure today as the UK energy giant expects a large write-down for the problems at its German plants/refineries. We also see slightly lower oil prices (but higher natural gas prices). CVX remains oversold.
โบ There could be some profit taking ahead of Powell's testimony, but I expect interest rate sensitive stocks overall to benefit from Powell's comments on current Fed policy and prospects for rate cuts. While Powell will certainly say that the Fed will remain data-dependent and that cutting the monetary reins too soon or too much could lead to a reversal of progress on inflation, he will also talk about the risks of cutting the monetary reins too late or too little, which could lead to (further) weakening of economic activity and employment - which we are already seeing at the moment.
โบ We want a good entry into Eli Lilly - which hit a new ATH yesterday and will further benefit from an analysis published in the medical journal JAMA Internal Medicine today that analyzed health records and other data to compare weight loss outcomes of overweight and obese individuals taking tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Lilly's Mounjaro and Zepbound, with those of semaglutide, the main ingredient in Novo Nordisk's Wegovy and Ozempic. After accounting for individual risk factors, the study found that patients taking Mounjaro were 76% more likely to lose at least 5% of their body weight, more than twice as likely to lose at least 10%, and more than three times as likely to lose at least 15% compared to those taking Ozempic - very good news in the ears of investors who poured money into Eli Lilly primarily because of the weight-loss drug - which was also the main driver for Eli Lilly (and for Novo Nordisk) recently. We want to buy Eli Lilly in the 920 - 925 range.
โบ We are also going LONG in (VIP ONLY) . After a negative session yesterday and (VIP ONLY) , I see (VIP ONLY) regaining bullish momentum. We are looking for an entry (VIP ONLY) in the $(VIP ONLY) range (below $(VIP ONLY) ) and expect the tech giant to rally and push towards new ATHs (~$(VIP ONLY) +). We had a solid start to the week. We can set a tight TP for our WTI position (optional) - we see that oil prices still have significant rebound potential after a technical pullback that started on Friday (after reaching a two and a half month high intraday). With our perfectly timed fourth gold trade today (re-entry), we are locking in profits with a tight SL to reduce our exposure to another pullback. You can work with a relatively tight TP - which could trigger during the Asian trade or set a wider TP. We tighten the SL slightly for our initial gold entry (+wide TP).

โบ After the gold price rose to $2,377.50, there was profit-taking, which pushed the gold price back down near $2,370. We do not see much movement in the USD (the US dollar index is still slightly in the red and has hardly changed) and yields have even cooled slightly and are now close to flat levels again (at 1 -2 basis points for 10-year US yields). We are going back into gold and can re-enter at a lower price than our (in-profit) SL.
โบ We see Wall Street (S&P 500 / Nasdaq 100) trading at ATH (all-time highs) in pre-market trading, slightly reducing demand for gold as a safe haven and driving some money back into equities after a sharp rise in the previous weeks due to significantly increased expectations that the US Federal Reserve will soon start to pivot in light of the slowdown in the US economy and labor market.
โบ Gold will continue to benefit from the rising expectations of interest rate cuts and the current downward trend of the USD, following rising expectations that the Fed will start cutting interest rates as early as September.

โบ Crude oil prices fell at the start of the week, but news that Storm Beryl has strengthened back into a hurricane as it approaches Texas, where it is expected to make landfall, is likely to reverse course. Major ports in Texas were already shut down over the weekend in anticipation of the hurricane, meaning a temporary suspension of oil exports and refinery shipments. These disruptions will only be temporary, but there are already signs that current supply is not keeping up with demand, as crude oil inventories have already fallen sharply in recent weeks (the EIA reported a massive 12 million barrel decline in stockpiles on Wednesday - much more than the expected 1 million barrel decline).
โบ Oil demand, which hit a record high for the holiday around Independence Day, drove up bets on strong summer oil demand (in the US) and countered concerns about demand in China, the world's largest oil importer. Ongoing geopolitical tensions continue to provide a tailwind for oil, as do growing hopes that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates as early as September.
โบ We see a partial technical pullback after WTI hit its highest level since late April on Friday - further boosted by weak US economic data (including Friday's NFP/unemployment figures). We buy the current dip (spot 81.55 - 81.75 / Aug'24 82.00 - 82.20).

โ๏ธ European equities rise after the election result in France; Quiet start to the week from economic data & events perspective
โบ European stocks edged slightly higher as traders reacted to the unexpected outcome of Franceโs snap election. The left-wing New Popular Front failed to secure a majority that would allow them to form a government mitigating fears of increased public spending. Macronโs group was second with Le Penโs party trailing in third place. The Stoxx Europe 600 benchmark reversed earlier declines, increasing by still 0.4%, while Franceโs CAC 40 Index also erased losses now trading 0.65% higher. Economic data showed that Germany recorded a trade surplus of โฌ24.9B in May, surpassing expectations. French government bonds narrowed their yield spread against German bonds, indicating easing market jitters.
โบ US equity futures remain unchanged following last weekโs rally, with attention shifting to Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powellโs congressional testimony and upcoming US inflation data. Last weekโs US nonfarm payrolls data showed slower hiring and wage growth, adding to the potential for a Fed rate cut in the near future. Treasury yields ticked higher with the 10-year yield hitting 4.295%, while the USD remained steady. Investors are also preparing for earnings reports from major banks like JPMorgan, Wells Fargo, and Citigroup due Friday. In other corporate news, Boeing faced legal challenges over its 737 Max jetliner issues.
โบ Asian shares gained, buoyed by a rally in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and positive US payroll data suggesting potential Fed rate cuts. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index rose, supported by TSMC's record high after a price target increase by Morgan Stanley. Chinaโs stocks were mixed amid ongoing economic policy adjustments and tariffs from the EU on Chinese EVs. Japanese markets saw modest gains, though investors remained cautious about domestic economic data, including a 1.9% year-on-year increase in average cash earnings and a 3.2% rise in loan values in June.
โบ Oil prices edged lower to $82/barrel, after four consecutive weekly gains, despite potential production disruptions from a US hurricane Beryl and Canadian wildfires. Gold prices declined slightly after the recent rally continued on Friday as predicted by SmartTrader Chief Analyst Robert Lindner. Gold is trading at around $2,375/barrel, affected by the positive sentiment on potential rate cuts. Bitcoin is trading slightly higher near $56,600 after falling sharply in the previous week with other cryptocurrencies due to concern over possible sales of the token by creditors of the failed Mt. Gox exchange.

Ultimately, price targets depend on the valuation of the company issuing the stock. Analysts base their price targets usually on earnings forecasts and assumed valuation multiples. Price targets (especially average price targets) can be used to value stocks and may even be more useful than a stock analyst's rating.

BUY NOW ๐ผ Dow Jones (US30) ๐บ๐ธ
โบ Fed Chair Jerome Powell said almost exactly what we expected him to say, including a warning that cutting rates too soon or too much could halt or reverse the progress of inflation. The most important message, however, is that Powell said recent data showed "modest further progress" in bringing inflation closer to the Fed's 2% target.
โบ We see little change in markets overall - although the more cautious words led to a slight headwind for growth / cyclical stocks and caused yields to temporarily rise a little further (causing a slight USD rise).
โบ We see a strong underperformance of the Dow Jones with the 9 most heavily weighted components all trading in the red, as well as generally strong selling in more defensive stocks, but as mentioned also in cyclical/industrial stocks due to concerns about a slowing US economy. It is also apparent that most of the money continues to end up in the few large tech stocks. However, we see little additional downside potential for the Dow Jones and buy in the range 39185 - 39200 or almost 550 points below yesterday's short-term high.
โบ We expect the current clear rotation into growth stocks - especially chip stocks (above all Nvidia) - to reverse somewhat soon.
๐ฃ๏ธ Tip: Multiply your usual trade size by ~ 3 - 4 (300% - 400%) trading the Dow Jones (US30).

BUY NOW ๐ผ EUR/USD
โบ We see a stronger USD ahead of Powell's testimony (14:00 UTC+0) as some investors fear that Powell will reduce hopes for rate cuts. I don't think he will do that as recent signs, especially in the labor market, point to a slowdown in the US economy and a weakening labor market. In June, the unemployment rate rose to 4.1%, the highest level since 2021. On Powell's hints of upcoming rate cuts, the USD is likely to weaken further.
โบ I believe that senators will push Powell to cut rates - such as committee member Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat from Massachusetts who has been critical of the Fed's rate hike campaign from the start and has clashed with Powell over high interest rates in the past. Last month, Warren, along with fellow Democrat Senator Jacky Rosen of Nevada, wrote to Powell urging him to cut rates sooner rather than later. High interest rates have driven up mortgage borrowing costs and hurt Americans' ability to afford a home.
โบ I continue to see the USD on the path to normalization and hopes for a rate cut remain high - currently swap markets are giving a 77% chance of a first Fed rate cut in September.
โบ The EUR was also pressured by weak European markets today, but the hung French parliament, indicating a possible political stalemate, is likely to lead to fewer reforms and not a big increase in fiscal spending overall. I continue to see the EUR/USD in an upward momentum and soon back in the range of 1.08500 - 1.08900. We find a good entry into the pair (currently 1.08115 - 1.08135).

โ๏ธ European stocks fall on BP slump & concerns over French election outcome; Markets await Powell's testimony
โบ European stocks faced declines today, with the Stoxx 600 index edging lower by 0.15% as the energy giant BP fell more than 3% due to a warning of up to $2 billion in second-quarter impairments. France's CAC 40 also continued to underperform following a resurgence of the left in weekend elections, leading to concerns about increased government spending. Dassault Systemes saw a drop after cutting its full-year earnings forecast. Investors remain cautious ahead of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's testimony to Congress later today.
โบ US stock futures trade near record highs, with S&P 500 futures rising 0.15% after the index set its 35th all-time high this year. Contracts on the Nasdaq 100 rose by about 0.2%. Market participants are keenly watching Powell's testimony for hints on the future interest rate path, with markets pricing in a 75% chance of a rate cut in September. US Treasuries remained steady, and the USD hovered near a one-month low.
โบ In Asia, Japanese stocks led gains, with the Nikkei 225 climbing to a new record high, driven by advances in semiconductor-related shares. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index saw significant contributions from information technology shares. Chinese stocks had mixed performance amid uncertainty about new central bank liquidity operations, while investors anticipate key policy meetings next week. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index slipped for the fourth session, nearing an 11-week low.
โบ Oil prices steadied after a nearly 2% drop over the previous two sessions. WTI Crude oil prices are now trading at around $81.5/barrel. Gold prices remained little changed at around $2,359/oz, after experiencing the sharpest profit taking in two weeks yesterday.

๐น Chevron (- 0.4 %) opens lower with headwinds from profit-taking in oil (down just over 1 % for the day). The energy sector continues to underperform. It's not a good price to close, so we remain LONG / we could re-enter in the 153.10 - 153.50 range (below $154) and our TP โ
@: 156.97.
โบ We see Wall Street extending its gains and trading at the ATH in pre-market trading. Optimism that the Fed will start cutting rates as early as September (swap markets currently expect a probability of almost 80%) continues to boost the growth sector and the weaker USD is also providing a tailwind. Analysts remain optimistic that we will see another strong earnings season, which in turn will be driven by the profits of the major technology companies (big tech).
โบ TSMC surged, hitting a new ATH in Taipei after Morgan Stanley joined the list of investment banks raising their price targets for the chipmaker ahead of the earnings release. TSMC shares jumped as much as 4.5% in Taipei, extending their rally this year to more than 75%. Morgan Stanley raised its price target for the Taiwanese chip giant by about 9% and expects the chipmaker to raise its full-year revenue estimate when it announces earnings next week, supported by high margins and strong demand.
โบ We also see gains for chip stocks in New York. We expect gains for the chip sector and already see Nvidia up just over 1% in pre-market trading. We expect further gains and want to find an entry range of 127.00 - 127.50* (i.e. expect some profit taking before Nvidia can rise further). Nvidia closed almost 2% lower on Friday and weakened somewhat recently, which also offers scope for a recovery. Nvidia remains very volatile.
โบ Nvidia also (again) received a (very!) positive call from an investment bank. This time from UBS. The analysts at UBS have raised their price target from $120 to $150 and reiterated their "BUY" rating for the stock, citing the recent positive supply checks. According to UBS, the supply chain checks have confirmed their belief that demand for Blackwell rack-scale systems "remains exceedingly robust."

Gold found support in the $2,370 - $2,367 range (pre-NFP price) as we anticipated and has now rallied back above $2,375. โบ We buy the dip of gold to $2,370. We see mainly profit-taking after the gold price reached a more than one-month high in the previous session due to rising bets on interest rate cuts in September. The USD remains on the soft side after last week's losses due to weaker US data. Slightly higher yields in the US are creating a slight headwind for gold.
โบ Friday's labor market data showed that the unemployment rate hit a 2-1/2 year high of 4.1% (vs. 4% expected), indicating a weaker US labor market and a decline in hiring. Increasing signs of a weakening US economy and labor market pushed rate cut expectations for September to nearly 80%.
โบ We now see gold back near pre-NFP/unemployment rate data and expect increased buying in that range $2,367 - $2,371.
โบ Gold also experienced a slight headwind in Asian trading as the Chinese central bank did not purchase gold for its reserves for the second consecutive month in June. However, overall demand remains high and fears that the weakening economic data will limit the rise in share prices in the second half of the year are rising.

โ๏ธGlobal stocks slightly higher ahead of NFP jobs data
โบ European markets trade higher with the Stoxx 600 posting gains of 0.4%, driven by positive sentiment from soft US economic data that bolstered hopes for Federal Reserve rate cuts. UK equity-index futures rose following the Labour Party's landslide victory, which promises greater economic stability. In Germany, industrial production dipped significantly by 2.5% in May, much lower than the expected 0.2%, causing concerns over the manufacturing sector. France's trade deficit grew to โฌ8B in May, while industrial production decreased by 2.1% over the previous month.
โบ After yesterdayโs market holiday, US equity futures trade slightly higher as traders await non-farm payrolls report later today, expected to show moderation in job growth. Soft economic data, including weaker ISM Manufacturing and Service Sector PMI reports, have strengthened the case for potential rate cuts by the Federal Reserve as early as September.
โบ Asian markets saw mixed performances. Japanโs Topix index hit record highs before retreating slightly, while Chinese stocks continued their losing streak amid weakening investor sentiment and anticipation of the upcoming Third Plenum. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index ended lower, breaking a four-session winning streak.
โบ Oil traded higher at $84/barrel as Hurricane Beryl signaled a potentially severe storm season, with shrinking US crude stockpiles suggesting improved demand. Gold headed for a second consecutive weekly gain, trading at $2,365/oz, driven by safe-haven buying ahead of the Federal Reserveโs meeting. Bitcoin fell below $55,000, its lowest level since February, due to the repayments being made by Mt. Gox to its creditors.

The markets took the poor US economic data as good news today and significantly increased their rate cut bets due to the slowdown in the US economy combined with ongoing disinflation. We can set a fairly tight TP for our Nasdaq 100 position. However, the Nasdaq will show little movement tomorrow in combination with a likely slightly positive European session (as US equities are only traded over-the-counter). Increased rate cut expectations also sent yields sharply lower today - which also weakened the USD, boosting gold and other commodity prices. We saw a slight recovery in the USD, which then also caused a slight correction in gold - we can work with a tight TP. Gold continues to benefit from increasing hopes of interest rate cuts and remains bullish. You can also work with a fairly tight SL for our Nasdaq 100 position, as we currently see very positive momentum - especially due to further significant gains in chip stocks (Nvidia, Broadcom) + Tesla.
