🔹 The Nasdaq 100 (+0.15%) saw gains after the CPI report and then a short-term wave of profit-taking. Although the US CPI showed further signs of a slowdown in the US economy and consumer spending, the report made a rate cut by the Fed in September very likely. Consumer prices in the US cooled faster than expected. We can work with a TP near the ATH ✅ @: 20786.40

🔹 Chevron (- 0.2%) opens little changed after strong gains yesterday. Commodity prices will benefit from a weaker USD, but will also face a slight headwind from signs of a weakening US economy. However, we see oil/fuel demand in the US at record levels. We are updating our price target ✅ @: 156.47. The oil price is also benefiting from optimism about interest rate cuts.


► We buy the dip in Eli Lilly - which opens 0.5 - 0.8% lower, although Morgan Stanley follows our recommendation from Tuesday and calls Eli Lilly "overweight" and raises the price target to $1,083 (from $1,023). We made the perfect Eli Lilly trade on Tuesday and closed perfectly yesterday. We can now find a good re-entry range of $930 - $935* (+ spread).

► We are also buying the underperformance of Apple after yesterday's strong gains and with Apple remaining super resilient. The cool US CPI data points to some weakness in the US economy, but also gives a boost to interest rate sensitive (growth) stocks thanks to further increases in rate cut expectations. Apple is often seen as a rather defensive growth stock and experiences a slight headwind when interest rate-sensitive stocks rise. We are now seeing similar movements in pre-market trading. Apple is trading 0.5% lower (at 231.50) and could see further light profit-taking after yesterday's strong gains. We are looking to buy Apple's mini dip in the 230.30 - 231.80** range. Bank of America again rates Apple a "BUY" and has raised the price target to $256 (from $230). The 10% increase in iPhone shipments targeted by Apple also gives the company a tailwind.

► We expect a solid session in New York as the CPI data is very Fed-friendly.

🚨 US CPI data in 8 Minutes

Analysts are optimistic that the core consumer price index will rise for the second time in June by just 0.2% month-on-month (the same increase as in May). This would be the smallest consecutive increase since August 2023 - a pace that even the Fed could live with. The expectations in detail:

Analysts' expectations seem to be realistic, but traders' "real" expectations seem to be even more optimistic, i.e. if CPI comes in slightly higher than expected, this will have a stronger negative impact on risk sentiment than if the data comes in slightly cooler than expected (= positive on risk sentiment).

I expect the June CPI report to be another solid report that maintains expectations for rate cuts in September. The market will react immediately, especially to the "headline" inflation rate (YoY). A sell-off would be a good opportunity to buy in, as the current bull market still has room to run.

The CPI data will also have a strong impact on yields / the USD. A positive inflation report will send yields and the USD sharply higher. If the CPI report confirms the ongoing disinflation, yields may fall further and the USD will remain in normalization / weakening mode even in the short term.

If you tightened the TP for your gold position and kept that - the TP ✅ 2378.87 already triggered with gold again seeing gains during Asian trading (as we expected; I widened my TP after additional gains in early Asian trading were visible). We see gold now above $2,383 again - if you are still in - you can close a bit better. We see gold rising further ahead of key US inflation data, with investors being optimistic that inflation has cooled down further. Analysts expect slight signs of a further cooling of (headline) inflation towards the Fed's 2% target - but real market expectations appear to be even more optimistic - it's best to secure profits here now/soon.

While we traded not much today - we closed our open positions very well (exception - S&P 500). We set an almost unreal perfect TP for our Eli Lilly 📸 position (although I expect the pharma giant to see more gains short-term). Gold saw slight technical selling with stocks outperforming but we continue to see optimistic rate cut expectations and further sliding yields (also supported by solid demand for US 10-Year Notes today).

We can set a tight TP for our EUR/USD position and tighten the TP of our gold position expecting again gains during Asian trading.

🔰 NYSE CLOSING UPDATE 🕯

► We are seeing an extremely resilient rally that even accelerated towards NYSE closing and ahead of tomorrow's important US inflation data (US CPI), which is expected to show that disinflation in the US is continuing. I did not expect such a strong market today.

► It's one of, if not the strongest market I've ever seen - almost completely unconcerned with any kind of (economic) news and now also driven by the current normalization expectations - which will bring a weakening of the USD (which also leads to investors wanting to hold less cash = also additional tailwind for equities) and interest rate cuts - widely expected as early as September.

► Apple continues to be one of the most resilient stocks, and big tech and AI stocks are also driving the already strong performance of the year higher. We are seeing stocks at very hot levels - and although a correction seems long overdue as the fundamentals no longer support this very strong rally either, there has been nothing to stop the rally recently. However, hotter-than-expected US consumer prices tomorrow would certainly lead to a sharp correction - but it is likely that data will come in Fed-friendly.

► We saw a very strong market overall today - with almost no exceptions - the longest S&P 500 rally since November and 11 out of 11 sectors in the green in New York. The European markets also ran very hot today - they closed well in the green and rose even further in after-hours trading boosted by stocks in New York. Much points to further gains for stocks - but we can potentially find better entry points tomorrow (before and after the important US CPI data as well as before the upcoming earnings season, which starts in full swing on Friday with big bank earnings).

► We are increasing our SHORT position in the USD, while the market ignores Fed Chairman Jerome Powell's comments, which were not as dovish as hoped. Yields jumped yesterday after Powell's statement, but have cooled down again.

► The NZD/USD fell almost 60 pips (which is a lot for the NZD/USD) after the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) left interest rates unchanged as widely expected, but gave a rather dovish rate forecast and also expected inflation to cool to 1%-3% later this year.

► The interest rates of the Fed and the RBNZ are both at 5.5%. There are also increasing signs (and expectations) of interest rate cuts in the US as US economic and labor market data soften and disinflation returns. Investors will mainly focus on tomorrow's CPI data in the US. The USD remains historically strong - even against the NZD - and still has significant room to fall further.

► We see a relatively positive market sentiment - good for the risk-sensitive NZD. The NZD/USD is finding support in the 0.60650 - 0.60700 range. We expect the pair to recover some of today's sharp losses.

❗️ Global equities off to a cautiously positive start on Wednesday thanks to continued optimism for Fed rate cuts

► European stocks edged slightly higher today following new peaks for US equities yesterday, with traders remaining optimistic about potential Federal Reserve rate cuts this year. The Euro Stoxx 600 benchmark climbed about 0.15%. Basic resources stocks declined due to falling crude oil and base metal prices. Among individual stocks, Spanish utility Enagas rose over 4% after selling a 30% stake in US pipeline firm Tallgrass Energy to Blackstone Infrastructure Partners.

► The S&P 500 set a new peak with its sixth straight daily advance, its longest winning streak since January. While markets reacted rather negatively pm Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell's testimony his comments still indicated a cooling job market, which keeps hopes for rate cuts later this year. The Nasdaq 100 also reached a record high. Treasuries remained steady, with two-year yields near a three-month low. Traders are now anticipating further clues on the policy path from Powell’s additional testimony later today and upcoming US inflation and jobs data later this week. We see Wall Street little changed in pre-market trading.

► Japanese stocks advanced, while Chinese and Australian stocks declined, leaving a regional gauge little changed. China’s consumer prices beat out another small gain in June, rising 0.2% year-on-year, down from 0.3% in May. This marked the fifth consecutive month of minimal consumer inflation, highlighting weak domestic demand. Producer prices fell by 0.8% year-on-year, a slower decline than the previous month’s 1.4% drop, influenced by government support measures. The ongoing deflationary pressures reflect continued challenges in China’s economic recovery. The Shanghai Composite fell 0.3%, reflecting mixed investor sentiment. Bond traders are preparing for potential interventions by China’s central bank to address record-low yields.

► Oil prices are little changed at $81/barrel, with concerns over Chinese demand and uncertainty over the timing of Federal Reserve rate cuts sending gold prices tumbling. The latest drop comes despite the US inventory drawdown - with another crude oil inventory report today (EIA Crude Oil Stocks Change at 14:30 UTC+0). Gold rose slightly to $2,372/oz as yields cooled and Asian demand remains strong, as also predicted by our chief analyst Robert Lindner, who continues to see gold in a bullish momentum (in all time frames).

► We have seen another (intraday) record day for the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100. We see Wall Street indices in an overbought state after the recent rally, which was again driven by (only) a handful of stocks - notably AI stocks, but also strong gains by Tesla, which has recently been able to gain more market share in the battery sector.

► Fed Chairman Jerome Powell was rather cautious today, almost "boring" and possibly disappointing the markets a little, as he again gave no clear signal for an imminent rate cut at his hearing. Recent inflation data suggested "modest further progress" in price trends, according to Powell - but "more good data" would boost confidence that inflation is approaching the Fed's target. The Fed will continue to decide from "meeting to meeting".

► We are seeing deep red markets in Europe, and China has also disappointed recently. The technology-heavy Hang Seng fell to an almost two-and-a-half-month low today.

► Wall Street's outperformance seems to be getting increasingly out of hand. We are now selling the S&P 500 near the ATH (5587.50 - 5595). Wall Street has benefited greatly from increased rate cut hopes - which have risen particularly on the back of deteriorating US economic data - this is in reality a shaky tailwind - as the high valuation now needs more evidence of imminent rate cuts.

We found a great entry (again) into Eli Lilly, which opened lower (in the range we expected / before rising again back to positive territory). We secure profits and set our TP either at yesterday's price or above. My SL just triggered in a short-term sell-off. You thus have to adjust the SL slightly. If our SL triggers, we can find a good entry near $931.

Gold has considerable upside potential from here and could even test the May highs (2425 - 2450) in the course of the day. We are therefore working with a wide / open TP for the time being. We can also buy on dips. Gold will remain volatile today, but the CPI report could not have been better for gold.

We generally see a weakening of the USD. We currently see slight concerns about the US economy as the much cooler than expected consumer prices point to weakening consumer demand / weakening US economy.

However, the CPI report was a clear confirmation of the September rate cuts -> this will be a tailwind for risk sentiment for most of the day.

(I bought gold just before the report was released and set a tight SL on this position, but I want to stay LONG in gold).

❗️ European stocks open higher after US tech rally, focus shifts to upcoming US CPI data

► European stocks posted gains, with the Stoxx 600 advancing 0.5% (these gains, however, were already realized in yesterday's afterhours trading), driven primarily by technology-sector shares such as SOITEC and Dassault Systemes. Positive economic data also supported the markets, with the UK's GDP expanding 0.4% month-over-month in May, beating forecasts. Industrial production and construction output also showed significant recovery. Germany's inflation fell to 2.2% in June, from 2.4% in May, reflecting a slowdown in goods prices and a faster drop in energy costs.

► US stock futures were steady, while the USD weakened against most major currencies ahead of the (core) CPI reading (due later today 12:30 UTC+0), expected to show a 0.2% (core) rise in June for the second consecutive month (with also headline inflation YoY expected to cool further to 3.1% down from 3.3% in May // core inflation YoY is expected to stay at 3.4%). This anticipation comes as traders bet on a potential rate cut by the Federal Reserve in September. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 hit fresh all-time highs, with the tech sector, including Nvidia and Apple, driving the rally. Fed Chair Jerome Powell noted that inflation doesn't need to fall below 2% before cutting rates, citing a significant cooling in the labor market.

► Asian markets saw significant gains, with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. reaching record highs following robust sales growth. Japan's Nikkei 225 Index hit an all-time high, bolstered by AI-related chip stocks and expectations of Fed rate cuts. Chinese markets rebounded as authorities restricted short selling and quantitative trading to revive the sluggish stock market. Hong Kong's HSI saw a strong reversal with all sectors gaining.

► Oil prices climbed to $82.5/barrel, supported by decreased US crude oil inventories, indicating growing demand in the US. Gold advanced for a third consecutive day and saw again gains during Asian trading. The yellow precious metal is trading above $2,382/oz, continuing its upward trend as investors anticipate favorable inflation data from the US and potential Fed rate cuts. Both commodities continue to benefit from the Fed's increasing interest rate cut expectations and the weaker USD, which is also a consequence of the expectation that interest rates will be cut soon.

It is a good day for us - we also saw another strong day for the tech sector and see great anticipation that tomorrow's key US inflation data will strengthen the case for rate cuts. Stocks are running hot - especially the big tech companies (again) and the AI darlings.

The S&P 500 is pointing to another positive close - which would mean the longest winning streak since November. As the air gets tighter, we see a bullish market and rate cut optimism.

Our S&P 500 is ~35 points out of profit - we are now setting a tight SL. We could see some light profit taking in the last few hours of trading in New York - but it makes little sense to make any major moves here (although I expect some light profit taking - which could also push the (outperforming) Nasdaq 100 back towards 20610 - 20640.

We see further comments from Powell at the conclusion of his two-day Congressional hearings having limited impact. We also see Wall Street remaining near ATH and the USD weaker while yields are little changed.

We are SHORT the USD (against the EUR, NZD and with our gold trade (indirectly)). We are thus securing slight profits with our NZD/USD. We have traded against the market and found the almost perfect reversal point - however, we now see little volatility overall - no reason to be so deep (SHORT) in the USD.

We see Wall Street little changed, but close to/at ATH. After initial slight losses following Powell's testimony yesterday, the market remains optimistic about upcoming rate cuts, especially as Powell also emphasized the increasing signs of a cooling labor market, although he could not give a timetable for rate cuts. Further testimony from Powell to Congress shortly and tomorrow's US inflation and labor market data could provide further clues on the policy stance.


🔹 The S&P 500 (+0.2%) is up slightly and has reached a new ATH in pre-market trading. We can set a tight TP ✅ @: 5585.10, which can be triggered in early NYSE trading or during Powell's second testimony (from 16:00 CET shortly after NYSE opening).

🔹 Alphabet (+ 0.3%) trades higher and also benefits from TD Cowen raising its price target for Alphabet
to $220 (from $200). We set our price target near the ATH ✅ @: 191.14.

🔹 Chevron (+ 0.1%) opens little changed but has found support near $153.00 and remains attractive medium-term (remains in underperformance).

🔹 Eli Lilly (+ 0.8%) opens higher at a new ATH and is likely to trigger our TP for a big gain. Barclays raises its price target on the stock to $1,025 (from $913) and reiterates its "Overweight" rating, following our analysis from yesterday. A super trade.


► We are getting back into gold near our triggered TP. We have seen gold not only reach our TP but continue to rise - back above $2,380. We can take advantage of the current slight profit taking and/or increased volatility at the NYSE open and get back into GOLD in the (VIP ONLY)* range. We see yields still lower, but somewhat mitigating the earlier sharp losses prior to Powell's testimony.

► We do not want to overtrade the still hot markets - even in light of additional volatility during Powell's testimony. Eli Lilly probably closes deep in profit for us and then remains bullish. We will watch the pharma giant.

► We see big tech companies opening higher and leading Wall Street higher. In particular, we see Nvidia (as so often; Truist also reiterates its "BUY" rating) and AMD with strong gains. Among non-tech stocks, Eli Lilly is the biggest contributor to the S&P 500's slight additional gains.

We see the swap markets continuing to price in a 75-77% chance of a first Fed rate cut in September. Gold is maintaining its upward momentum and is benefiting from the ongoing expectation that the Fed will start cutting interest rates as early as September.

► The upward momentum in gold remains intact - in the medium/long term in any case, but also in the short term after gold saw some selling today following Fed Chairman Jerome Powell's not as dovish comments as the markets had hoped.

► Yields rose after Powell's comments, which also led to a 0.15% rise in the USD (DXY) and made gold more expensive for non-USD buyers.

► We see yields cooling towards the NYSE close as investors remain optimistic for a first Fed rate cut in September (now at around 75% - 76% vs. 77% before Powell's testimony).

► We can work with a pending order and buy in the $2,360.62 - $2,363.03* range (I set my pending order at (VIP ONLY)).

► Expectations of cooling price pressures in the US (ahead of Thursday's US CPI data) will continue to support gold. Although Powell will continue his testimony tomorrow, he is unlikely to add much that could surprise the markets. We expect the USD to remain slightly bearish in the coming sessions.

► Asian investors - especially from Southeast Asia - continue to buy gold, mainly due to concerns about an economic slowdown. You can thus also buy earlier as we expect overall a positive Asian session for gold.
