We see stocks stabilizing (albeit with heavy losses), including the big tech stocks that sold off sharply today. We are likely to see some dip buying in the coming session - but we are not increasing our position here.
Apple and Amazon recovered more than other big tech stocks - chip stocks like Nvidia, Broadcom or especially AMD are likely to close near or at session lows. We have found a strong re-entry in Amazon. Your Meta position has probably already closed well out of the money. UnitedHealth closes well above $570 - there was more in it for us here.
We are updating some SL & TP. Our gold position is deep in profit. The S&P 500 is hovering near 5600 - but additional selling of chip stocks ahead of NYSE closing leads to a close near/at the lows (also for the Nasdaq 100).

โบ We see stocks, especially tech stocks, falling sharply because investors are concerned about tighter US restrictions on global chip sales to China. The strong gains in chip/AI stocks have driven the bull market over the last 1 1/2 years.
โบ We buy Amazon's sharp drop to $186.00 and see significant potential for a rebound, while investment banks are very bullish on the e-commerce giant, US consumer spending is robust (which could also accelerate again if the Fed cuts rates) and sales during Amazon's Prime Day (two-day shopping event) are expected to be up strongly y/y (approx. 10-11% higher y/y according to Adobe).
โบ We are working with a tight SL.

BUY WHEN NYSE OPENS ๐ผ United Health (UNH) ๐บ๐ธ
We see the rotation out of the (big) tech sector continuing for now - although today's losses are also due to concerns that the US could take a tougher stance on China and Taiwan. The sharp losses of ASML (after the earnings report) and Tokyo Electron also show the growing concern about the restrictions on Chinese chips, which are also weighing on US chipmakers. However, after the recent strong price gains, which were mainly seen in risk- and yield-sensitive second-line stocks, we see a rather small setback.
๐น S&P 500 (- 0.9%) is trading lower after hitting a record high / closing yesterday but find some support near 5610. We can tighten our TP a bit โ
@: 5659.40. Our position was well in profit yesterday (at NYSE closing) but fell out of profit again.
๐น Amazon (- 0.6%) opens lower but continue to benefit from very optimistic investment banks / firm. Needham upgrades Amazon PT slightly to $210 (from $205) and suggests to "BUY " Amazon. The e-commerce giant may also benefit from strong sales during its Prime Day (two-day) shopping event.
๐น Apple (- 1.8%) opens lower after our position almost hit our TP yesterday. Apple sees slight headwinds from a (only) "neutral" call from UBS. We tighten our TP to โ
@: 234.47.
๐น Meta (- 1.9%) also opens lower. We currently see negative momentum - will wait for a rebound - but will soon exit Meta.
โบ We expect investors to become somewhat more cautious and shift some of the money they are withdrawing from mega caps into more defensive stocks. UnitedHealth has more potential for further (significant) gains after yesterday's strong price gains and the positive earnings report. In pre-market trading we see a lot of interest in the healthcare giant. We want to enter UNH near $550* / or as early as possible (yesterday's closing price: 548.87) and expect further gains - possibly towards $570+.
โบ UNH also benefits from the fact that Jefferies has upgraded UnitedHealth from "HOLD" to "BUY" and raised the price target significantly to $647 (from $481). We see generally rising gross revenues in the health insurance industry in the US - with a growing and aging population and generally rising healthcare costs.

โบ We buy the CAC 40 in the range 7510 - 7530 and see the French main index also dragged down by overselling of EssilorLuxottica - which is trading more than 5% lower in Paris following news that the French-Italian eyewear maker is buying streetwear brand Supreme from VF Corporation for $1.5 billion. The 5% slide of EssilorLuxottica, however, is already a slide in market cap of near $4.5 billion - overselling. EssilorLuxottica also said in a different statement that it had agreed to buy an 80% stake in family-owned Heidelberg Engineering, a German company specialising in diagnostic solutions and healthcare IT for clinical ophthalmology which is aimed to help EssilorLuxottica to diversify into medical technology.
โบ European stocks are also under pressure on rising concerns about a revival of a US-Chinese trade war under a likely second presidential term of Donald Trump. General Chinese weakness and demand weighs on the French luxury sector.
โบ Also the stronger EUR weighs on the export oriented French economy.
โบ Expectations for the ECB keeping rates at current levels tomorrow is slightly weighing on European stocks. However, the current (healthy) rotation out of US tech mega caps will continue to support the broader market - including stocks in Europe. The CAC40 is also not as tech-intensive.
โบ Investors are generally still optimistic about Wall Street after very positive (Fed friendly) overall economic.

โ๏ธ European stocks lower as ASML drops; Global stocks under pressure on concerns about more US trading curbs on China
โบ European stocks fell on Wednesday, pressured by a slump in technology shares. The Stoxx 600 index is trading more than 0.5% lower, mainly due to ASML Holding, which tumbled almost 8% due to concerns about a severe US chip crackdown on China despite higher-than-expected orders. UK inflation remained unchanged at 2% in June, higher than the expected 1.9%, leading traders to reduce bets on an August rate cut from the Bank of England. The GBP rose to the dayโs high against the USD, reflecting these inflation concerns. Marketโs await the ECBโs rate decision due tomorrow.
โบ US equity futures were down, with S&P 500 contracts dropping 0.5% and Nasdaq 100 slipping 0.8%. This followed mixed results in Tuesday's session where the Dow & S&P 500 reached a new record high. Treasury yields stabilized after dropping yesterday, with the 10-year yield sitting at around 4.17%. Traders are cautious ahead of the Federal Reserve's Beige Book release, as well as housing starts and building permits data for June. The optimism around a potential rate cut by the Fed in September continues to support risk-on sentiment, though geopolitical tensions and trade risks remain a concern.
โบ Most Asian markets closed in the red, reacting to President Xi Jinpingโs recent address at the Third Plenum and ongoing US-China trade concerns. Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 0.43%, with the JPY steadying amid intervention fears. The Reuters Tankan survey showed improved sentiment among large manufacturers in Japan, ahead of the Bank of Japan's policy meeting. China's Shanghai Composite dipped 0.41%, digesting President Xi's strategic agenda amidst economic challenges. Hong Kongโs Hang Seng Index closed almost unchanged at -0.01%, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 hit fresh all-time highs, rising 0.96%.
โบ Oil prices rose slightly to near $81/barrel (Aug'24 contract), after experiencing the biggest drop in almost two weeks, driven by discussions of a possible cease-fire in the Middle East which reduced the risk premium for crude. Gold prices continued to rise after passing new all-time highs, supported by lower yields, rate cut hopes but also from market uncertainties and geopolitical tensions. Gold is currently trading at around $2,476/oz. Bitcoin also climbed above $65,000, hitting its highest level in nearly a month.

โบ All our index LONGs closed with a profit today. We are re-entering the S&P 500 below our triggered SL (5650 - 5654* range). The S&P was weighed down by a weak performance of mega cap tech stocks today as we saw the rotation from big tech to small caps/other non-tech sectors again. The very strong outperformance of the riskier and more interest rate sensitive small caps is a positive sign for investors' risk appetite.
โบ We also see yields continuing to fall as hopes for rate cuts remain high despite today's stronger-than-expected retail sales which have helped to raise expectations that the economy survived the high interest rate phase before the Fed will soon start cutting rates (likely in September).
โบ We are seeing improving market breadth and broad gains in New York, with 85% of the components of the S&P 500 trading in the green. In addition, Wall Street banks are reporting solid earnings - which is often seen as a positive sign for upcoming earnings reports. ASML, one of the most important companies in the chip sector, reports tomorrow.

Market sentiment in the US remains positive, while retail sales beat expectations, suggesting that the main driver of the US economy (consumer demand) remains strong, even if inflation is falling. Economic data remains Fed-friendly and points to a soft landing - especially as the Federal Reserve is about to cut interest rates for the first time.
๐น Apple (+0.2%) opens slightly higher. We found a good entry yesterday near the session lows (in a strong session). Apple hit a record high yesterday and was the number one trending stock in pre-market trading (on Monday) after Morgan Stanley labeled the stock a "top pick". We set a TP near the ATH โ

๐น Meta (+0.4%) remains near $500 and opens slightly higher. The investment firm Wolfe rates Meta as "Outperform". We stay LONG in Meta.
๐น Wells Fargo (+0.2%) rallied more than 2% yesterday after Friday's sharp decline. We traded yesterday's gains very well and remain LONG.
โบ We are well positioned. Robust retail sales could boost consumer stocks today - such as Amazon (which is already up 1.2% in pre-market trading / and also benefiting from positive analyst sentiment). Shopify has even risen by 5+%. We expect (VIP ONLY) to remain on the upswing and, after initial profit-taking, may enter the $(VIP ONLY)** range. We expect (VIP ONLY) to push back into the $(VIP ONLY) range over the course of the week.
โบ We are seeing data that is near optimal (= goldilocks conditions / data) - inflation data and expectations remain Fed friendly, the US labor market shows some easing of tightness and retail sales remain resilient.
โบ We are already positioned LONG, both in individual stocks and in the FTSE 100. Our Dow Jones closed in profit (either SL / or TP and then reached new ATHs).
โบ We take advantage of the NYSE opening volatility and find an entry into the S&P 500 (range 5646 - 5651* or now). We see broad gains in New York with the exception of energy and commodities. We will likely see another push towards ATH (for S&P 500 / Nasdaq 100 | Dow Jones already at new ATH).

BUY NOW ๐ผ Dow Jones (US30) ๐บ๐ธ
โบ We buy the Dow Jones dip below 40275 - after initial pre-market gains following a positive earnings report from Dow Jones heavyweight UnitedHealth. However, the shares turned negative and are now the biggest drag on the Dow Jones (currently).
โบ We see signs that the 2023-24 rally is broadening - with improved market breadth that includes small-cap stocks and non-tech sectors. This is positive and could lead to further gains and a healthier bull market (or a real bull market at all - as Wall Street's gains over the last 15 months have mainly come from a handful of mega-cap/AI stocks).
โบ Markets now expect a greater than 90% probability that the Fed will cut rates in September - which is also reflected in yields, which are falling again today.
โบ We also see Goldman Sachs trading almost 1% lower in pre-market trading - after a strong earnings report yesterday (and a strong performance). I see more recovery potential here. Goldman Sachs is the second most heavily weighted (7.88%) stock in the Dow Jones.
โบ We expect the Dow Jones to remain on a positive trajectory and are therefore buying the current dip.

โ๏ธ European equities fall after weak earnings; Wall Street stable ahead of retail sales, with USD rising on Trump's stronger position
โบ European stocks experienced a downturn ahead of the European Central Bankโs rate decision on Thursday. The Stoxx 600 index dropped 0.4%. The luxury fashion sector was hit hard as Hugo Boss sank 10% after cutting its profit guidance due to weaker demand for high-end fashion items. The mining sector also underperformed, with Rio Tinto Group's shares declining following disappointing guidance on its copper operations. Overall sentiment was dampened despite some positive economic indicators, as investors turned their attention to upcoming US retail sales data for potential insights into Federal Reserve interest rate decisions.
โบ US equity futures remain unchanged, reflecting a cautious market stance ahead of key economic data and corporate earnings reports. S&P 500 futures remained steady as investors awaited retail sales figures, which are expected to show flat month-on-month growth for June. This data is crucial as it could influence Federal Reserve policy, especially after Fed Chair Jerome Powell stated that inflation is moving towards the central bankโs 2% goal. Major earnings reports from Morgan Stanley and Bank of America are anticipated to provide further market direction, following a strong earnings report from Goldman Sachs on Monday. The USD strengthened against most of its Group-of-10 peers, driven by speculation that Donald Trump is in a strong position to win the upcoming US presidential election. Trump also recently announced his choice of JD Vance (39) as his running mate.
โบ Asian markets closed mixed, with the MSCI AC Asia Pacific index heading for a third consecutive day of losses. Hong Kong stocks led the decline in the region, while some Chinese stocks also traded lower amid rising geopolitical concerns. Trumpโs proposed new tariffs of 60% on all Chinese exports to the US could significantly impact China's annual growth rate, as noted by UBS Group. Meanwhile, Japanese stocks rose as investors bet on Japan remaining in favorable terms with the US under a potential second Trump term. The JPY weakened against the USD, reflecting market expectations of a prolonged period of weakness for the Japanese currency.
โบ Oil prices fell below $81/barrel, amid concerns over weak Chinese demand and due to a stronger USD. Gold prices rose to $2,437/oz, nearing all-time highs as traders sought safe-haven assets in light of political uncertainty in the US. Bitcoin prices have settled around $63,000 after surging yesterday. The recent assassination attempt on former President Trump and his increased election prospects have driven gold and Bitcoin prices higher as a hedge against political instability.

โบ Gold hit (temporary) resistance at $2,440 - an almost two-month high - and investors then took profits. Gold saw another boost after Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell hinted at an event in Washington, D.C., today that the Fed will not wait until inflation has fallen to its 2% target before starting to cut rates. There are increasing signs that the Fed is also verbally preparing to cut interest rates. Powell also expressed optimism about the US economy and said a hard landing was unlikely.
โบ The increased expectations of interest rate cuts were already evident after last week's inflation data, in which the consumer price index fell more sharply than expected. A slightly higher than expected producer price index did little to reduce expectations of interest rate cuts. According to the CME FedWatch tool, the markets now see a 94% chance of a US rate cut in September.
โบ We buy the mini dip back to ~$2,420 after today's peak and continue to see gold bullish.

โบ We have seen turbulent markets today - with a very sharp sell-off in US technology stocks - into oversold territory. The Nasdaq 100 is trading almost 3% lower and on track for its worst 1-day decline since December 2022. We see that the heavily sold tech / big tech stocks are now showing signs of stabilization.
โบ The turbulent markets have also caused the "fear gauge" - the VIX - which measures volatility in the S&P 500, to climb to its highest level since early May. This is positive for the USD, and we traded this rebound perfectly today with the GBP/USD. If you are still SHORT in this pair - close soon/now โ
@: 1.30025 - 1.30075.
โบ The stronger USD and the sharp sell-off in equity markets also led to selling in commodities - including precious metals.
โบ Although gold is technically a bit overbought - especially when looking at the gap to other precious metals - we see good sentiment conditions for gold given the uncertainty about who will lead the US and what relations between the US and China, the US and Europe and the US and Russia/Ukraine will look like under a US President Donald Trump.
โบ We also see that expectations for a Fed rate cut in September are at 98% - with an expectation of almost 5% for a rate cut of 50 basis points (very unlikely). We therefore also see gold as fundamentally supported. We expect yields to fall further, so that gains for the USD will remain limited and the opportunity cost of holding gold will fall even further.
โบ We are buying the current decline in the gold price in the range of $2,451.50 - $2,455. We can already set a TP.

Oil prices rebounded today as we predicted yesterday. We are tightening our SL and update our TP (still off-profit).
Oil prices continue to be pressured by concerns about the Chinese economy but have been oversold in recent sessions especially looking at strong US demand and further (rapidly) falling US crude stockpiles. API reported another massive decline by 4.4 million barrels for the previous week, against the expected decrease of only 33K barrels.
We may see some resistance at $81.00 (spot).
We also see a slightly stronger USD now (also as we expected) which weighs a bit on the current recovery attempt.

SELL NOW ๐ฝ GBP/USD
โบ While the USD is likely to be in the normalization phase for the rest of the year (and 2025) - i.e. weakening against the major currencies after the strong gains during the pandemic and the Fed's rate hike cycle - we see an oversold USD in the short term. The DXY (USD index) is trading almost 0.6% lower today - strong movement.
โบ The expectation that the Fed will cut interest rates in September has pushed the USD significantly lower in recent weeks - even unexpectedly good data, such as yesterday's robust US retail sales figures, could hardly halt the USD's decline. Investors see the current data as Goldilocks (=ideal) data, i.e. continued disinflation, a slight weakening of the US economy, but enough resilience in the US economy to become even stronger as soon as the Fed changes course.
โบ There are some tailwinds in sight for the USD, such as growing concerns about further trade restrictions under a US President Donald Trump. We also see headwinds in the chip sector (and big tech / Wall Street) - also due to today's losses of ASML and Tokyo Electron, both of which have China as their largest market - a market that may be increasingly hard to sell to.
โบ UK inflation data came in slightly above expectations, leading to a further rise in GBP and reducing bets on a rate cut in August. We sell the pair now near 1.30450 - the highest level since July 2023 - and expect the USD to find some support later today after recent/current heavy losses. We expect rising resistance towards 1.30500.

Sorry that I was less active yesterday. I was also a bit limited at times today as I drove back to Frankfurt (including a detour). If you are still LONG in WTI, best to set a tight SL, although I see WTI supported below $80.00 (spot), especially as the USD is trending slightly lower again after recent modest gains. However, continued weakness in Asian markets is weighing on energy and commodity prices (with the exception of precious metals, of course - gold hit a new ATH today). Our latest value stock picks were phenomenal.

Price Target (or target price): When an analyst sets a price target for a stock, he or she is trying to determine what the stock is worth and where the price will be in ~12 months. Ultimately, price targets depend on the valuation of the company issuing the stock. Analysts base their price targets usually on earnings forecasts and assumed valuation multiples. Price targets (especially average price targets) can be used to value stocks and may even be more useful than a stock analyst's rating.

โบ Retail Sales MoM at 0% was in line with expectations - but resilient, especially without more volatile gasoline/auto sales.
โบ Gold faces a slight headwind from a temporarily stronger USD (and a slight rise in yields) as slightly better than expected US retail sales show that the Fed may hold off on a rate cut - but I don't see this as a report suggesting the Fed should hold off.

โบ We remain LONG in Wells Fargo and can re-enter near our (deep in earnings) SL - 57.30 - 57.50+.
โบ Wells Fargo slipped 7% after reporting lower than expected net interest income on Friday (closing -6%), although earnings per share of $1.33 beat consensus of $1.28 and revenue beat expectations - also good numbers compared to the industry. Revenue also came in above consensus expectations (for Q2/24). WFC increased its dividend by 14%. WFC is growing faster than other Wall Street banks, as evidenced by EPS growth of +33% y/y and long-term EPS growth of 13% vs. 9% for the industry. The net profit margin of 24% and return on equity of 10% are well above those of the industry. Wells Fargo remains attractive - we can still buy the dip.
โบ We are also getting into Apple (again) after the company has performed very well recently (we have also traded very successfully), there are signs of rising iPhone sales (including rising orders from Apple), there is promising growth in the high-margin Apple Services sector and the investment banks are VERY optimistic (including Morgan Stanley, which today raised its price target from $216 to $273). We continue to expect Apple ato outperform - even if the growth / big tech sector remains in a possible sideways movement.
