Almost impossible in this volatile market: We hit the perfect entry in the Nasdaq (to the minute), which briefly jumped above the 19700 level before continuing its slide and falling into the 19500 - 19600 range we expected (and possibly testing the 19500 level later in the day). We are now setting a tight TP as our position is deep in profit (and an in-profit SL) - alternatively you can close.

We saw surprisingly sideways movement with cautious dip buying - despite yet another recommendation to "BUY" Nvidia (from Bank of America today). Big tech's inability to see a strong rebound points towards more profit taking and further losses today.

We tighten our SL (in case you still hold a DAX position). We see slight gains but will likely see profit taking returning in the US later today. We see rising US yields (now more than 5 bps higher for the US 10-Y) which could also result in the rotation from growth / big tech to return (short-term boosting other sectors).
The higher yields / stronger USD also pushed gold now below key-level $2,400. The bearish momentum / technical pullback is strong in gold at the moment even with gold remaining bullish in the medium-/long-term.

โบ While we see signs of dip buying - especially in the last hour of US trading yesterday and in early after-hours trading - and an attempt at recovery now, we see fragile market sentiment that will continue to lead to profit-taking.
โบ We see broad weakness in Asia and Europe - also due to increasing concerns about more protectionism under a possible Donald Trump presidency.
โบ The broad-based MSCI Asia Pacific Index fell by more than 1.4 % today, recording its biggest weekly decline in three months. The sharp sell-off in chip stocks returned in Asia on fears of further US restrictions on sales to China (also under Biden).
โบ The overall deterioration in risk sentiment is also keeping the USD supported - which is weighing on the growth sector in the US. Even if the losses in New York seem harsh - they only look that way at first glance - because we are seeing a "healthy" correction after weeks/months of very stable gains.
โบ There is no room for further rising rate cut expectations for September - they are already close to 100%.
โบ Friday often sees typical profit-taking in a shaky week - we had a very turbulent week. We are therefore selling the current recovery attempt of the Nasdaq 100. It is likely that the Nasdaq 100 will test the 19500 - 19600 range later today. We expect rising resistance towards 19800 and returning profit taking.
โบ We also set a tight SL / TP for our DAX position (if you are still LONG) - TP โ

๐ Friday, July 19
โ๏ธ Global equities extend declines amid widespread technical outages
โบ European stocks are on track for their longest losing streak since October, with the benchmark Stoxx 600 falling over 0.5%. The decline is led by travel, leisure, and basic resource stocks. Sartorius plunged over 13% after lowering its full-year guidance, while Ubisoft Entertainment fell more than 8% following a mixed release on full-year targets. A technical outage of Microsoft's online services, linked to the cyber security firm Crowdstrike, is disrupting the services of airlines, railroads, banks, media companies etc. worldwide, as well as the London Stock Exchange.
โบ US equity futures are slightly down, with contracts on the S&P 500 falling by around 0.1% after a fall of almost 1% on Thursday (Nasdaq 100 also down 0.1%, with Microsoft the biggest drag at -2.1%). Initial jobless claims in the US increased the most since early May, supporting expectations that the Federal Reserve will soon cut interest rates but also increased concerns about the economy's health. Investors are also thinking about the impact of a second Donald Trump presidency. Treasury yields (10-y) hovered around 4.2%, and the USD index held onto gains from the prior session for now.
โบ The MSCI Asia Pacific Index declined over 1%, marking its biggest weekly drop in three months. Chinese stocks in Hong Kong slumped after the Third Plenum failed to convince investors about the economy's new growth impetus. Asian currencies slipped against the USD amid an equities selloff. Concerns about potential US restrictions on chip sales to China continued to weigh on TSMC, which fell for a third day despite a positive quarter and solid forecasts in its earnings report on Wednesday.
โบ Oil prices are unchanged near $81.2/barrel. Concerns that Chinese economic growth may slow weighs on oil prices despite signs of strong demand (and falling stockpiles in the US). Gold prices fell to $2,420/oz, continuing the recent correction after the recent strong gains. As uncertainty in the markets increases and Joe Biden may drop out of the race for the US presidential nomination, further increasing uncertainty, gold could see increased safe-haven demand.

Our open positions have been negatively impacted by today's volatile (equity) markets. In the current market, where we are seeing cautious trading, we need to lock in profits earlier. Although the rotation out of the big tech stocks paused at the NYSE close, we saw broad equity market losses overall today, possibly indicating further short-term profit taking.

โบ Today's stronger USD - also due to the weaker EUR (with rising expectations of a second ECB rate cut in September) - and the general increase in demand for safe havens following a renewed slump in share prices have weighed on commodity prices today, although interest rate cut expectations remain unchanged. Swap markets expect a 98% probability of a first Fed rate cut in September. Today's labor market data, which was weaker than expected, showed that the US labor market continues to weaken - which also makes rate cuts more likely.
โบ New claims rose by 20,000 to 243,000 last week - the highest level since August 2023. Initial jobless claims climbed to their highest level since the end of 2021 - a sign of rising unemployment in the US.
โบ A stronger USD makes gold and most other commodities more expensive for non-USD buyers. We see slightly higher yields - but no signs of a strong upswing that would weigh on gold.
โบ I do not see the start of a recovery phase for the USD. We can therefore buy the fall in the gold price to currently near $2,440, with gold also benefiting from the uncertainty as to whether the current sell-off in US mega-caps will continue. A strong earnings report from TSMC helped tech stocks recover - but only temporarily. The focus will now turn to Netflix's earnings report, which could disappoint high expectations.

โบ We are seeing a very nervous market - this will lead to rebounds, but also to recurring waves of profit-taking. We need to secure in-profit positions (especially in the tech sector) earlier now, as profit-taking currently also leads to sentiment-driven panic selling.
โบ The Nasdaq 100 is trading almost 1% lower today (after yesterday's 3% fall). Previously, the Nasdaq was already up more than 1% today - meaning we are seeing a ~2% price reversal.
โบ Chip stocks opened well but turned negative again (with the exception of Intel). We also see that the general rotation out of the big tech stocks widening.
โบ We are (again) cautiously going LONG here - and expect some support (also technical) in the 19600 - 19630 range. We are working with a tight TP and SL. It is also possible that the Nasdaq 100 slips further towards 19500, where the Nasdaq 100 should find more support.

โบ After a strong opening for the big tech/chip stocks, we saw (likely temporary) profit-taking. Big tech still has plenty of room to recover and is benefiting from the strong earnings report and solid guidance from global chip manufacturing leader TSMC.
โบ We also saw more Fed-friendly US economic data as the US labor market eased further with higher than expected jobless claims in the previous week and signs of rising unemployment - making rate cuts even more likely.
โบ The near 100% expectation that the Fed pivot will take place in September will keep risk sentiment positive. We buy the dip and can re-enter below our previous entry level - 19825 - 19860 range. We are working with a tight SL and a TP at the key 20K level.

โบ We do not expect a V- (or U-) shaped recovery in the Nasdaq, but see significant scope for Big Tech - which was heavily oversold yesterday as the rotation out of Big Tech and especially chip stocks continued - to extend the current modest recovery.
โบ We currently see the Nasdaq 100 0.35% higher after a massive 2.94% drop yesterday, driven by concerns over tougher US stops on companies supplying China with advanced semiconductor technology and a general tougher stance on China (possibly Taiwan too).
โบ Chip stocks, which suffered very heavy losses yesterday, are also showing signs of recovery. AMD, for example, which slumped by more than 10% yesterday, is up 1.5% in pre-market trading. It is not surprising to see renewed dip buying after the losses (especially after yesterday's very sharp losses) as recent economic data has been very positive, pointing to a robust US consumer while inflation cools towards the Fed's 2% target. More importantly, investors continue to believe in a first rate cut soon as the swap market is pricing in an almost 100% chance of a first Fed rate cut in September.
โบ We are now buying the dip (19860 - 19890* range; I bought at 19850) and believe the odds are very good for the Nasdaq 100 to test/break the key 20000 level in the short term (we can set a TP slightly above 20000). We are also working with a rather tight SL to limit potential losses in case Big Tech continues to fall.

In case you set the TP - then the Nasdaq already triggered it (19657.30). We also see Nvidia now sharply falling with the rotation out of big tech returning (as we predicted). Investment banks again strongly advised to buy the big tech stocks, from Amazon, Apple to Meta causing dip buying.
If you are still SHORT, set now an in-profit SL and update your TP. We expect more selling but want to secure profits.

SELL AFTER* NYSE OPENED๐ฝ NVIDIA (NVDA) ๐บ๐ธ
โ ๏ธ volatile
We are seeing similar movements to yesterday - stocks are stabilizing/recovering ahead of the NYSE open. However, the recent rotation out of the big tech companies has been significant and investors will remain cautious and continue to take profits from the recovery. We also see US Treasury yields rising as the expectation of rate cuts provides little room for further increases. We expect the sell-off in tech to return and potentially widen in today's session.
๐น The Nasdaq (+0.15%) is up slightly but remains under pressure from a stronger USD, higher yields and losses in global equities. We see some relief buying after earlier losses due to computer system outages - but this is likely to be short-lived.
๐น Amazon (- 1.4%); Shopify (- 0.5%) open lower despite more positive investment bank calls. Bank of America recommends to "BUY" Amazon (also recommended to buy Shopify on Tuesday. RBC Capital reiterates "Outperform" on Shopify with an $85 price target. It doesn't help to turn the current negative momentum, even if the US consumer remains strong. Both stocks are also yield and USD sensitive. We have tight SLs.
Meta opens slightly higher (+0.3%) and also benefits from Oppenheimer raising his price target on Meta to $525 (from $500). If you are LONG, you should still close soon (477 - 480 range; current TP is at 484.97) as I expect the rotation out of Big Tech to continue after initial gains.
โบ We expect further selling in the big tech/chip stocks, which are now also facing fundamental headwinds from the stronger USD and higher yields. Nvidia opened little changed today. The chip giant and top performer of the S&P 500 opened at $120.50* (we want to SHORT near that price range 120.50 - 121.00). We expect that Nvidia will not be able to benefit greatly from the recent very optimistic analyst assessments (also today "BUY" from Bank of America) and will instead fall into the $115 - $117 range. We are therefore positioning ourselves SHORT. Nvidia will be very volatile. The US plans to tighten restrictions on chip sales to China continue to weigh on the chip sector.

SELL NOW ๐ฝ AUD/USD
โบ We made a great GBP/USD SHORT on Wednesday (sold at the absolute peak) and closed deep in profit on the same day. However, we should have stayed LONG in the USD a bit longer as the current market volatility, rising volatility and ongoing concerns about more US protectionism continue to support the USD. US government bond yields are trimming recent losses, which is also supporting the USD. Rate cut expectations are high and have no scope for a further rise (in short-term rate forecasts).
โบ The risk-sensitive AUD continues to slide - the AUD/USD fell 0.15% today, breaking below the 0.67000 level, with further headwinds expected as commodity prices also remain under pressure from the stronger USD and concerns over the health of the global and especially the Chinese economy.
โบ The AUD is also sensitive to China. The Chinese economy grew at a slower than expected annual rate of 4.7% in the second quarter (significantly lower than the 5.3% in the first quarter), according to the government. Although there are signs of improvement in factory output, incomes and investment (domestic) in China, weaker consumer demand will continue to limit growth.
๐ฃ๏ธ Tip: Multiply your usual trade size by ~ 1.2 - 1.5 (120% - 150%) when trading AUD/USD.

SELL NOW ๐ฝ WTI (USOIL) ๐ข (spot)
โบ Oil prices are still 2% above Tuesday's closing price after US crude oil inventories fell further. According to the API, inventories in the US fell significantly in the week ending July 12 (by 4.44 million barrels vs -1.923 million expected). This week is the third week in a row that crude oil inventories have fallen according to API estimates, representing a total loss of 15.5m barrels - a massive drop.
โบ While oil/fuel demand in the US continues to hover near record levels, growing concerns about the health of the global economy, particularly in China, the world's largest oil importer, are weighing on oil prices. China's economy grew by 4.7% in the second quarter, slower than expected.
โบ As risk sentiment continues to develop negatively - also due to the global technical outages - demand for safe havens is expected to rise, which will result in the USD maintaining its recent gains and possibly even rising slightly. Both of these factors are also weighing on oil prices.
โบ We expect further headwinds for oil/commodity prices and are selling WTI here (spot price 81.10 - 81.35 / Aug'24 82.75 - 83.00)

We closed yesterday's session very well. We also started today's session also well and found good entries (Nasdaq 100 & Amazon - but we need to lock in profits earlier). We see Netflix slightly lower after the earnings report (as is often the case) - even though the streaming giant beat expectations for EPS, revenue and subscriber growth - it's a solid report.
With Biden potentially dropping out of the 2024 campaign against former President Donald Trump, this could weigh on market sentiment as the restructuring of the Democratic ticket leaves investors uncertain about the election. I expect Biden to drop out, but I don't see a Democratic replacement candidate winning against Trump later this year.
We are updating our position in gold - rising expectations that Biden will drop out would likely cause gold to rise again. We can set a relatively tight TP that can be triggered overnight.

We are updating our equity positions and generally want to reduce our positioning on a recovery, even if we see stocks / tech stocks rallying at the NYSE close - which is often a good sign for the following session. Tech will also be influenced by Netflix, although the streaming giant is not an indicator for big tech (which is mainly about revenue growth through AI integrations and innovation).
We see Amazon breaking even again (for us) at the NYSE close. Shopify has moved lower - we are limiting losses. If you're still LONG in Meta - the social media giant has continued to move higher and towards session highs - we can extend our TP โ

โบ We get back into Amazon - which fell below $186.00 (our entry price yesterday) and expect a rebound from current returning profit taking. Amazon continues to benefit from very optimistic investment banks. Mizuho reiterates Amazon as โTOP PICKโ. We get into Amazon now (range $184.00 - 184.50) and expect profit taking to fade away.
โบ Concerns about a too quickly slowing US economy continues to weigh after a sharper-than-expected decline in US labor market data - which, however, further increased the likelihood of a first Fed rate cut in September.
โบ US shoppers spent a record $14.2 billion online during Amazon's two-day Prime event, up 11% year over year, according to Adobe Analytics data. Adobe had predicted U.S. shoppers would spend $14 billion online during the two-day event - a strong forecast. Numerator, which tracked purchases across more than 35,500 households, said shoppers spent more per order this year, with an average order size of $57.97, up from $54.05 during last year's event.
โบ The returning profit taking also resulted in the Nasdaq 100 turning to sessions lows - we should have set an in-profit SL for our Nasdaq 100 position earlier after we hit the perfect entry. We expect the Nasdaq to find support in the range 19710 - 19740.
โบ The Nasdaq 100 also saw slight headwinds from a stronger USD after ECB's president Lagarde hinted to more rate cuts which weakened the EUR - in reality this is positive news (not only for stocks in Europe).

After heavy (big) losses in tech/chip stocks yesterday, we are seeing dip buying in the very same stocks that are leading Wall Street higher. A solid outlook from TSMC spurred a rally in chipmakers, which took such heavy losses yesterday. The weakening of the markets further strengthens the outlook for rate cuts.
๐น S&P 500 (+ 0.4%) / Nasdaq (+ 0.9%) are rebounding and have more room to rise after yesterday's sharp losses. Our Nasdaq 100 position is deep in profit. We stay LONG but update again SL / TP of our Nasdaq 100 position SL ๐ @: 19918.70 / โ

๐น Apple (+ 0.9%) opens higher after some losses yesterday. We already saw recovery signs before NYSE closing and see a positive opening today. We update our SL ๐ @: 227.97. Investment giant Goldman Sachs continues to recommend to "BUY" Apple.
๐น Meta (+ 2.6%) rebounds strongly and may already trigger our TP. If not - widen it / tighten the SL: ๐ @: 466.47 ๐ | TP โ
@: 478.89 ๐. Deutsche Bank raised its price target on Meta to $525 (from $500) and recommends to "BUY" Meta.
โบ Our portfolio is benefiting dramatically from the recovery in pre-market trading. The investment banks are recommending to "BUY" our three open positions, which gives us an additional boost.
โบ (VIP ONLY) has seen dramatic price swings over the last two days - including a (VIP ONLY) rise on Tuesday, followed by heavy profit-taking and a more than 7% plunge (resulting in (VIP ONLY) losing all of Tuesday's gains). We now see (VIP ONLY) opening in the (VIP ONLY)* range and then possibly with some profit taking (with rising support near (VIP ONLY)). It is quite possible that (VIP ONLY) will now pull up again (potentially significantly). (VIP ONLY) has recently presented strong growth and free cash flow figures - after years of rather disappointing/declining margins. (VIP ONLY) stock from "Neutral" to "Buy" (VIP ONLY), which also helped push (VIP ONLY) higher (price target from $(VIP ONLY)). While I don't often agree with Sills - his analysis is not incorrect. (VIP ONLY) could recover with dip buying and should also benefit from robust US retail sales and the strong performance of (VIP ONLY). We expect first slight profit taking.

โ๏ธEuropean stocks gain ahead of ECB Decision; Nasdaq futures / Big Tech rebounds amid positive TSMC earnings & dip buying
โบ European stocks posted gains as investors prepared for the European Central Bank's policy decision (12:15 UTC+0), where expectations are rates to remain unchanged. The Stoxx 600 index rose 0.3%, led by media stocks, while the focus remained on ECB President Christine Lagarde's comments regarding potential rate cuts in autumn. Analysts expect further easing with two quarter-point rate cuts likely in September and December. In the UK, the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.4% in May, aligning with consensus estimates.
โบ Nasdaq 100 futures climbed 0.5%, signaling a partial recovery following significant losses driven by tight US restrictions on chip sales to China. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) beat earnings estimates and expressed confidence in AI spending, which helped restore sentiment towards tech stocks. The Federal Reserveโs Beige Book indicated slight economic growth and cooling inflation, with Fed Governor Christopher Waller hinting that rate cuts might be nearing, although not immediately. The USD traded near its lowest level in two months, while treasuries remained steady.
โบ Asian markets were mixed, reflecting concerns over tighter US restrictions on chip sales to China. Japan's Nikkei 225 dropped 2.36% due to a strong JPY and local tech stock sell-offs, including Tokyo Electron. Chinaโs Shanghai Composite rose 0.48% ahead of the Third Plenumโs conclusion, with traders hopeful about economic policy directions. Hong Kongโs Hang Seng Index increased by 0.58%. Australia's ASX 200 fell 0.27% despite better-than-expected job additions in June.
โบ Oil prices gained, hovering close to $82/barrel, driven by concerns over wildfires in Canada affecting oil production. Gold gained and hovered close to all-time highs, ahead of the Federal Reserveโs meeting, as investors seek safe-haven assets amidst ongoing economic uncertainty as well as swap markets pricing in a near 100% chance for a first Fed rate cut in September.

We can set a tighter TP for our gold position which will likely trigger overnight. We see stabilizing yields, a slightly (short-term) oversold USD and technical overbought gold. It's a good decision to close here early (still well in profit).
