Sorry patchy internet already. Microsoft is trading more than 7% lower post earnings report which also pushed our Dow Jones position into our TP for yet another big profit.

Microsoft reacted exactly as we expected - beating expectations but still seeing heavy post earnings selling with real expectations even higher given Microsoft very strong YTD performance and high valuation.

We see Wall Street with slight gains ahead of further important economic data and important earnings reports - for example from Microsoft, the second most valuable company in the world, or AMD, the third largest semiconductor manufacturer in the US (after Nvidia and Broadcom).

► We see reduced trading volume and volatility (slightly higher now during NYSE opening phase) overall and expect investors not to make any major bets ahead of Microsoft's (and AMD's) earnings report. However, we are making a classic "dip buy" with Netflix - which performed poorly in July despite a strong earnings report two weeks ago. Netflix reported strong subscriber growth and revenue was also ahead of estimates. We expect Netflix to attract some dip buyers soon - possibly already today - as Netflix also received a positive analyst call from Oppenheimer. We find an entry point in the 627.50 - 629.00 range - slightly above yesterday's close.

► We see the DAX up (currently at 18410 or 0.45% higher), despite mixed economic data - and especially weak German data again with GDP growth back in negative territory (both QoQ and YoY). However, most Eurozone economies recorded growth: Eurozone GDP growth of 0.6% YoY was actually slightly above expectations of 0.5%.

► Germany remains the sick man of Europe, governed by a coalition with no clear plan and record low approval ratings.

► The region's mixed growth results highlight the challenge facing ECB policymakers when they decide in September whether the eurozone economy is fragile enough to justify another rate cut.

► German inflation data came in slightly above expectations, which also brings some stagflation concerns to the table. Preliminary data on German inflation showed an increase of 2.3% compared to 2.2% expected and compared to 2.2% in June.

The markets are seeing some gains - driven by gains in chip stocks and ahead of the Fed's interest rate decision this evening. We are seeing the markets we expected and traded the jittery market / expected Microsoft plunge yesterday with incredible precision - congrats again!


🔹 The Nasdaq 100 (+2.1%) has risen strongly and has broken through 19200 - supported by a very strong rebound in chip stocks (Nvidia +7.5% // Broadcom +6.3% // AMD +8.0%). We also see that MSFT has cut its losses overnight. We have a position deep in profit and with a tight SL / TP. Despite the current significant gains, the market remains exposed to the risk of sudden profit taking - especially in the Big Tech sector - we expect slight additional gains - edit: TP already triggered / congratulations

🔹 Netflix (+0.8%) opens well and is back in profit for us. We update our TP ✅ @ 630.47 slightly and close in profit.


► We take advantage of the volatility and position ourselves LONG in today's underperforming Dow Jones. We currently see the Dow Jones already at ~40800 with some negative momentum. We can target an entry NEAR 40750* and expect the Dow Jones to catch up a bit, with some of the strong gains in Big Tech likely to turn into (smaller) cyclicals today and broaden in general.

► Stock picking is difficult now - much of the movement is already taking place in pre-market trading. There could be further buying in Nvidia, AMD & Co. but they will remain very volatile and will certainly encounter profit taking as they approach daily gains of 8.5% to 10%.

► We are also likely to see strong gains in the energy and commodities sector - a weaker USD, a stronger JPY and geopolitical tensions are generally favoring commodity prices. However, energy stocks are already 1.5 % - 2 % higher pre-market. BHP could be an option, but is also up 1.6% in pre-market trading. We need to find good entries in this volatile market and therefore wait for early trading.

► We see global equities rising on a very busy day full of economic data, key earnings reports and other global events that influence investors' short-term behavior.

► We see a significantly weaker USD - mainly due to the JPY's strong gains following the Bank of Japan's 15bp rate hike - as the Bank of Japan pushes for a normalization of its monetary policy after 16 years of extremely loose monetary policy, including negative interest rates. A rise in inflation in the eurozone is also weighing on the USD, as the ECB is in the difficult position of having to cut interest rates further in order to support the ailing economy, but at the same time not risk inflation rising again. The Eurozone's inflation/stagflation problem (there are already signs of very damaging stagflation in Germany) is reducing the pace at which the ECB can cut rates.

► We see the Nasdaq 100 hitting resistance at 19100 - but already up more than 1% after heavy losses yesterday. We see the Nasdaq 100 led by gains in chip stocks - thanks to hopes that US export restrictions will be somewhat less severe (albeit mainly for non-US chipmakers) and thanks to very impressive sales growth in AMD's AI chips.

► We expect the Nasdaq 100 to rise above 19100 before profit taking later today ahead of the Fed rate decision - although overall I expect positive momentum from the Fed comments and the very clear signs that the Fed's first rate cut in September is imminent. We can work with a TP at Monday's / this week's highs.

❗️ Global stocks rise after exemption report for non-US chipmakers & ahead of Fed rate decision; BoJ raises rates to highest since 2008

► Global stocks rose worldwide, supported by strong gains in chipmakers after a report that the US will exempt allies from new China chip restrictions, and the Bank of Japan raised its benchmark interest rate to its highest level since 2008 at the start of a crucial day for markets.

► Japanese chipmaker Tokyo Electron led the gains among Asian technology stocks, while Amsterdam-based ASML Holding NV rose by up to 11%. Technology stocks also recovered in other countries. Microsoft narrowed its losses after reporting disappointing results from its cloud business, which overshadowed the slight overall gains in both divisions for the fourth quarter. AMD, on the other hand, rebounded after reporting strong growth. AMD announced that it sold more than $1 billion of its MI300 chips this quarter and that the data center category grew 115% year-over-year. Other inflation data from the Eurozone is also released, including Eurozone Inflation.

► MSCI's benchmark Asian stock index rose 1.8% as Japanese lenders jumped. Chipmakers led gains in Europe, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 look set to erase yesterday's losses. Later today, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell is expected to announce a possible rate cut in September. Meta Platforms will also announce its results after the close of trading, following Microsoft's rather disappointing figures.

► We are looking at a very eventful day ahead, which has already caused volatility in the markets as traders digest the BOJ decision and prepare for the Fed. The JPY fluctuated before gaining more than 2% against the USD. US Treasuries stabilized after falling in the previous four sessions. The USD also slipped slightly ahead of the Fed rate meeting - less than 24 hours after the BOJ action.

► In commodities, oil prices jumped more than 2% after recent heavy losses (WTI back at $76.00/barrel spot) after Hamas claimed (which of course will be true) that Israel had killed its political leader Ismail Haniyeh in the Iranian capital Tehran, further fueling tensions in a region that produces about a third of the world's crude oil. Gold rallied for a second day to trade above $2,415 an ounce, also supported by rising geopolitical tensions.

The Dow Jones saw some gains in final trading with in particular financials performing well but now some profit taking again trimming gains. The Dow Jones will be impacted significantly in after hours trading by Microsoft’s earnings report. With high expectations, hitting expectations will not be “enough” for MSFT. We update our SL/TP. I expect Microsoft to see some selling post earnings report.

We continue to see a turbulent, mixed, sentiment driven and short-term trap filled market. We have kept our calm (as we always do) and avoided falling into one of the many traps. The Dow Jones found support at 40600 (now back at ~40700 but still with downside potential) - as we expected and where we closed our Dow Jones SHORT almost perfectly.

The Nasdaq 100 is currently trading significantly lower at -1.5% - due to heavy losses in the big tech stocks. Here, too, the big tech stocks initially rose, but then there were further heavy losses, led by the chip stocks.

We can now set a not-too-wide TP for our DAX position, which was already well in profit.

I am now on my way to the airport in Larnaca, which limits my ability to react immediately. Nevertheless, I'll keep you up to date as best I can.

► We see the rotation out of the big tech/chip stocks returning (again), with Nvidia (- 4.5%) in particular suffering heavy losses, but Broadcom, AMD (reports later) and Qualcomm etc. also trading in deep red. We see SMIC (small-mid cap companies) with gains and the Dow Jones is up 200 points (or 0.5%) for today, with strong gains in financials after positive analyst reports. In particular, Dow Jones heavyweight Goldman Sachs is leading the Dow Jones.

► We SHORT here quickly and expect investors to get a little nervous ahead of the important earnings reports later today (after the close).

►Although dovish comments from the Fed (which I believe we will hear) may trigger a strong rebound from recent losses - we see a rather cautious trade at the moment. We sell the Dow Jones at ~40790, we can work with a TP.

► We also set a tight TP for our Netflix position, which was already deep in profit (now break-even): TP ✅ @: 630.67

► European stocks edged higher as investors brace for a week filled with significant economic data, US megacap earnings, and central bank decisions. The Stoxx 600 index rose by 0.2%, buoyed by BP gains after the company maintained its share buyback pace and increased its dividend following a profit beat. France's GDP grew by 0.3% in Q2, supported by domestic demand and stable exports, while Germany's GDP contracted by 0.1% over the same period, reflecting mixed economic signals in the region.

► US futures were little changed (S&P 500 at 0.0%) as markets await earnings from major technology firms like Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon, with Microsoft reporting after the market close today. Also AMD will be in focus as the US' third largest semiconductor company. The USD and 10-year Treasury yields remained steady as traders anticipated the Federal Reserve's policy decision on Wednesday. The Fed is expected to leave interest rates unchanged, but will signal a rate hike in September given concerns about the weakening labor market. We tighten the SL of our AAPL position a little more, as we see a slight resistance before 219.00 (seems to be broken through). We can also raise the target price of our gold position. The gold price is back near $2,380 and is benefiting from the USD giving up some of its earlier gains and yields (for 10-year bonds) stabilizing by almost 3 basis points over the course of the day.
