Stocks are pointing to further gains - yesterday the Nasdaq 100 posted its strongest daily performance since May and Wall Street as a whole had its best Fed rate decision day since 2022. Meta was the first stock in the Magnificent 7 to rise (significantly) after corporate earnings. Apple and Amazon will report later today.

🔹 The Nasdaq 100 (+0.25%) // Dow Jones (+0.15%) will open higher after a positive overnight performance. We expect the positive momentum in New York to continue.

► We buy the dip in Alphabet, which opens 0.7% lower (update - Alphabet opened a tiny bit higher than we expected at 170.25) after strong numbers from Meta revealed that Alphabet is somewhat behind in monetizing its massive AI investments. However, it also shows that further AI integrations can indeed (soon) help to further accelerate revenue growth very quickly and increase profitability. Alphabet delivered a solid earnings report but has been sold since the release (also due to concerns of high AI investments - for which Meta was also wrongly sold earlier this year) and is still trading significantly lower or even below post earnings report levels. We buy GOOGL at 169.50 - 170.25* and expect recovery gains.

The market in my opinion strongly mispriced the Bank of England - I don't see the UK central bank pushing rate cut more forward than it's peers - especially not giving still risks on inflation (even at headline inflation at 2%). A bear trap in which most FX traders fell into.

The GBP will remain resilient. We traded against the market here (also benefited from the USD's rebound after sharp losses yesterday). Our position is very deep in profit - we secure profits.

Our performance in this very difficult market has been absolutely stunning (congratulations! - also on the huge profits this week) - especially considering the volatility of the last few days - which we have traded with near perfect performance. We always expected positive markets just before the FOMC rate decision and that the optimism (about upcoming rate cuts) would continue after the press conference - a very good prediction which makes our SHORT trade from yesterday even more impressive. Our SL / TP setting has also been exceptional in recent days (several times again today, including yesterday's Netflix position 📸 - which was already deeper in profit yesterday, however, before the sell-off in tech began).

We only have a single open position in the Dow Jones (+re-entry; we can set a TP) - which should generally benefit from the positive reaction to the Meta and Qualcomm earnings reports (the Nasdaq 100 traded at the day's high). The market took the Powell press conference as rather dovish overall - which can also be clearly seen in gold, which tested the $2,450 level in the meantime.

► The Dow Jones has now fallen by a little over 0.5% (from highs), although the market's reaction to the Fed press conference was rather positive or seeing it as dovish (as evidenced by falling yields, a weaker USD and an additional tailwind for interest rate-sensitive gold and oil prices).

► For me, Powell actually gave little plausible reason overall why the Fed didn't cut rates already (in this meeting) - it seemed more like the FOMC feared an overreaction from the markets as swap markets weren't expecting a rate cut in July - but almost 100% for September.

► So we are now mainly seeing a technical pullback and can (re)enter here (40845 - 40875* range - i.e. at a similar price to our LONG position before the Fed interest rate decision). The broad market continues to be supported by the prospect of falling interest rates in the coming months.

We set an in-profit SL for our EUR/USD. We see further gains ahead even with Powell defending the decision for no immediate rate cut due to conditions not yet met. However, he doesn't push back on the expectations for a first rate cut in September and even more than more or significant rate cuts could happen.

Congratulations - we found the perfect entry with the EUR/USD indeed finding support slightly above 1.08000.

We also see gold breaking the $2,430 - another sign that markets take Powell's comments as not hawkish and rather as confirming that rate cuts are imminent.

► We are seeing a very mild reaction to the Fed's "interest rate decision". The two-year yield (= interest rate sensitive) has now risen by 2 basis points, whereas it was unchanged before the announcement. The DXY rose to -0.2% (from -0.55% this morning).

► Reaction to bonds, USD are very mild, but there is also little movement in equities and gold/oil prices - all of which are sensitive to interest rate changes.

► We can buy the EUR/USD here near 1.08000, especially after the unexpectedly hot inflation data from the Eurozone and Germany today and yesterday, which will be a headache for the ECB in the coming months (especially if inflation proves stubbornly above 2% and 2.5% respectively)

► The Fed remains data dependent overall and the latest data suggests that a rate cut has become reasonable - I expect Powell to reflect this in the upcoming press conference (from 18:30 UTC+0)

► The sell-off has now gone very far in New York - especially the chip stocks that did well yesterday were sold off extremely (Nvidia down almost 8%, Broadcom -8%, AMD -8.1%, Qualcomm -10.0%, Texas Instruments -5.5%, Applied Materials -8.7%, Intel -5.5%, Micron -8.3%, Lam Research -11.2%).

► Although we are really trying to catch a falling knife here with a re-entry position, the further downward potential for today already seems very limited in view of these heavy losses.

► The market took the US manufacturing data very negatively as it fell deep into contraction territory (this time both the S&P manufacturing PMI and ISM data did not contradict each other and instead showed a sharp decline in manufacturing activity). Combined with signs of a weakening US labor market and yesterday's decision by the Fed not to cut interest rates, this all looks like a bitter cocktail for investors who fear that the US economy could slip into recession and that the Fed is too late to ease the situation.

► In fact, Powell was hardly able to give a logical reason yesterday as to why the FOMC decided to keep interest rates on hold for a while longer. While the overall outlook was then quite dovish, concerns are high that the Fed has already missed the "ideal" moment.

► We buy the very sharp drop in the Nasdaq 100 at / near 18800*, but work with a tight SL.

► We see a very sharp fall in yields, with yields on 10-year US Treasuries falling below 4% for the first time since February.

► We are buying gold's mini dip again, expect support in the $2,442.50-$2,445.00* range and continue to see gold supported by strong expectations that the Fed and other central banks (today the BoE) will start to ease monetary policy from decade highs. We expect gold to rise (significantly) above $2,450.

► The sharp rise in bonds (and thus fall in yields) was reinforced by a sharp fall in US manufacturing activity (to the lowest level in eight months), which followed weaker-than-expected labor market data. It adds to concerns that the US economy is slowing sharply after all, but raises rate cut expectations even further.

► I see a 100% chance that the Fed will cut interest rates in September and the market will do the same.

► Gold is also benefiting from geopolitical tensions as the situation in the Middle East, particularly between Lebanon (Hezbollah), Iran and Israel, is becoming increasingly volatile.

► The Nasdaq has risen by 0.30% compared to yesterday (regular closing price) - but only due to yesterday's after-hours gains, as there has been mostly slight profit-taking since then. The Nasdaq is currently more than 150 points below the peak reached in overnight trading, when the Nasdaq 100 was boosted primarily by strong gains in Meta.

► The Nasdaq 100 has had a very strong session - the strongest since February this year. Chip stocks in particular drove the gains in the Nasdaq 100 yesterday. Today we are seeing more mixed chip stocks - Qualcomm is trading almost 2.5% lower despite a solid earnings report with better than expected earnings growth. Lam Research is also trading lower by more than 2.5% despite beating expectations yesterday (but giving guidance in line with expectations).

► Meta's very strong numbers and higher-than-expected revenue guidance lead to a more than 8% higher opening for Meta and will make markets optimistic - especially after recent earnings reports from big tech companies Alphabet and Microsoft showed little sign of weakness or slowing revenue growth.

► AI is boosting Meta's profit growth and helping to cut costs: Meta has even reduced the number of employees by 1% year-on-year, while the company continues to grow rapidly in sales and improve its operating margin (= become more profitable).

► We find an entry into the Nasdaq with increased volatility near 19400* (+-20 points) and assume that tech stocks will also benefit from the Fed's rather dovish outlook, further signs of monetary easing worldwide (exception: Japan) and falling yields.

► We are buying the dip in the GBP after the Bank of England cut the prime rate from its 16-year high to 5% (25-BP rate cut). This is the first rate cut since the pandemic and therefore an important step.

► However, recent economic data in the UK has tended to improve - which means that the cut is not just for economic reasons or because of weakness in the labor market. In fact, wages continue to rise rapidly at 5.7% y-o-y (up from 6% in April) and remain well above consumer price inflation. Regular wages in the private sector have also risen by 5.6% y-o-y, compared to the BOE's forecast of 5.2% for the second quarter.

► We also see that the UK still has a major problem with services inflation. The latest figure was 5.7 %, 0.4 percentage points above the BoE's forecast from the Monetary Policy Report (May).

► The rate cut has weakened the GBP a bit further (not dramatically), but I don't think the Bank of England will be able to cut rates quickly which will keep the GBP resilient. Even though the Bank of England is ahead of the Fed in rate cuts now, the market believes the Fed will be able to cut rates faster (especially in 2025).

► We buy the decline in GBP/USD, which has fallen to almost 1.27500. We also see US Treasury yields continuing to fall, which will limit USD strength. The Fed / Powell made a rather dovish statement yesterday.

► Overall market sentiment is slightly improved - which also gives the GBP a tailwind.

❗️ Powerful US rally extends to Thursday after rather dovish Fed outlook and strong earnings from Meta & Qualcomm

► Wall Street looks set for a continuation of yesterday's strong rally as bullish sentiment continues after dovish comments from Fed Chairman Jerome Powell and the rise in technology stocks in the previous session led to the biggest gains since February. Technology stocks received a further boost from Meta's strong sales figures, in particular thanks to optimization through artificial intelligence, and strong sales growth at Qualcomm, whose key business of chips and modems for smartphones rose 12% year-on-year - more than expected. We see the S&P 500 up 0.25% pre-market and the Nasdaq 100 up 0.5%, while the Dow Jones remains flat for now as tech/AI stocks play a smaller role in the 30-stock average.

► However, the positive sentiment on the US stock markets did not carry over to Europe. The benchmark Stoxx 600 index fell more than 0.4% after banks and industrials reported mixed results and after yesterday's mixed economic data, including a rise in inflation in the Eurozone. Societe Generale shares slumped after continued disappointment over its domestic retail business. Shares in Rolls-Royce Holdings jumped as much as 11% after the company raised its profit forecast.

► Traders are now watching the Bank of England's interest rate decision, the third key central bank meeting in two days. The market is expecting the first rate cut (by 25 basis points) since the pandemic. This would mean that the Bank of England will follow in the ECB's footsteps and cut rates slightly earlier than the Fed (which is likely to start easing monetary policy next month). The changes in the Fed's statement underscored the change in tone from FOMC policymakers, who acknowledge the growing risks to the labor market if rates remain at current levels.

► In Asia, the Yen continued to rally after Wednesday's rate hike and yesterday's rather dovish Fed statement and Powell's comments, before giving back some of the gains (temporarily in my opinion) today. The USD lost more ground yesterday than at any time since May and extended its losses after the Fed's rate decision, but pared them back a little today, although the continued fall in US Treasury yields is a headwind. Japanese equities continued to fall after the Bank of Japan hinted at further interest rate hikes, while the recovery on the Chinese markets continued to falter due to disappointing economic data.

► In commodities, oil prices continued to rise after Iran reportedly ordered a retaliatory strike against Israel for the killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and a senior Hezbollah commander in Beirut within 12 hours. Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, blamed Israel and said Iran had a "duty" to take revenge because Haniyeh had been killed as a guest in the country. After yesterday's strong gains, the price of gold has falling slightly, but continues to be supported by expectations of interest rate cuts and further falling yields. The yellow precious metal is currently trading at $2,435/oz after reaching $2,458 in overnight trading.

I prefer to close our gold position here (in profit). We see the DXY trimming sharply losses up from -0.55 to now -0.4% ahead of the Fed rate decision later today.

We also see yields stabilizing with slight signs of edging a bit higher.

Gold remains very supported by rate cut expectations but saw already significant gains today. We can likely find a better re-entry.

► However, we see broad gains in the Dow Jones components. UnitedHealth is dragging the Dow Jones down somewhat. Microsoft also has room to go flat again with extreme gains in Big Tech. We expect a slight rotation out of Big Tech again (soon) after today's very strong gains - which should benefit the Dow Jones.
