โบ Our DAX SHORT from yesterday closed in profit (I closed at 17288.70 ๐ธ / now near ~17250) and while I expect more selling to come with markets remaining nervous and likely more signs of global economic slowdown and a Fed which will remain at the sidelines for longer we see calming market in US pre-market trading. I expect investors to do some dip buying again - likely especially in the tech stocks that sold off very heavily yesterday.
โบ We see the Nasdaq 100 up 0.4 - 0.6% in pre-market trading, wavering in the 17950 - 18000 range currently (which is more than 300 points below the Nasdaq 100's overnight high).
โบ We saw some solid earnings reports - even from industrial/cyclical Caterpillar, but also from AI enabler Palantir, as well as UBER - which I think is very attractive long term due to the profitability achieved by the ride-hailing/taxi app (I also advised my Swiss colleagues to add UBER to their US equity holdings today).
โบ We are seeing lower demand for bonds, causing yields to rise. While higher yields (and thus a stronger USD) usually mean headwinds for growth stocks, this shows a slight weakening of the flight to safety - for me a positive short-term signal despite the fundamental headwinds for growth and yield-sensitive stocks.

๐ SmartTrader Insights: Tuesday Markets Wrap ๐
๐ Tuesday, August 6
โ๏ธ Stock markets remain unsettled as investors remain nervous after Monday's historic sell-off
โบ Investors remain nervous and are bracing themselves for continued high volatility after Monday's historic slump. Global equities fluctuate but Japan remains the clear epicenter of volatility. The Nikkei ended the trading day up 10.23% at 34,675.46 points, its biggest daily gain since October 2008 (in percentage terms) and the highest ever in terms of index points. The Topix ended the day up 9.3% at 2,434.21 points. In after-hours trading, however, both indices fell significantly again, with the Nikkei now standing at ~33,200.
โบ US equity futures gave back their initial gains and European equities fell into negative territory. We also see US Treasuries stabilizing as investors temper their expectations of a sharp rate cut by the Fed to support the obviously weakening US economy. After Monday's extreme losses, the VIX index (the fear index), which measures volatility, remains very high and means that sharp waves of selling could occur at any time. Palantir Technologies jumped as much as 13% in pre-market trading after the company raised its full-year guidance and pointed to continued demand for its AI software.
โบ The sharply rising yen is unwinding the yen carry trade, which will continue to lead to margin calls and losses, keeping the market very volatile and likely to react very violently to any sign of central bank action. While we continue to see dip buying, I see an overly nervous market that will have a very hard time holding gains without falling back into profit taking. However, we are seeing more calm than yesterday - at least in pre-market trading in Europe and the US, which could lead to dip buying taking over. Overall, the economic calendar is not very busy today, which means that economic data is unlikely to have much impact today.
โบ In commodities, oil prices remained near seven-month lows - we see WTI near $73/barrel (spot) - with geopolitical tensions supporting oil prices. Gold prices stabilized after being affected by the stock market crisis and risk sentiment yesterday. The gold price fell yesterday, albeit less sharply than other commodities, equities or precious metals, as some traders reduced their profitable gold holdings to cover possible margin calls. Gold is trading slightly higher above $2,410/oz.

Sorry for the delay - I was booked by a Swiss investment firm for a two hour advisory session to assess their current positioning and whether we should rebalance as their portfolio has already lost 15% in value in Q3.
Our positioning has performed very well. Our gold trade was closed with a profit (SL) and our DAX is also in profit despite the recovery gains in Asia and especially in Japan. For me, the Japan bet was a bit too risky, which is why we opted for the DAX, which has continued to fall despite better than expected German economic data (factory orders/construction PMIs) - however, falling retail sales in the Eurozone show that the Eurozone consumer is showing signs of weakening.
We close in the money (or set a tight TP) and close soon as we also see a recovery move on Wall Street.
PS: Congratulations - in yesterday's chaos day - we won 100% ๐ of our trades.

No update here as we have been closing and securing positions earlier lately due to the increased volatility of the markets - please do this on your own as well. If your/our position is well in profit (e.g. the asset moved more than 0.5% in our favor - please do not always wait for an update to bring your SL into profit / at least break-even). โบ The Nasdaq continued to recover - and broke the 18,000 mark, with Apple in particular seeing dip buying after a very poor opening. Chip giants such as Nvidia and Broadcom were able to make up even more ground - albeit from even heavier pre-market losses. The rebound (attempt) was also supported by signs that the Fed is now moving faster, as some voices from within the Fed or from former FOMC members indicated a faster easing of monetary conditions.
โบ Chicago Fed President Goolsbee avoided committing to a specific course of action, but indicated that interest rates may be too "restrictive" at their current level. Statements like this will help the markets recover in the short term, but the overall negative trend is likely to continue.
โบ Fears of a recession in the US following the disappointing July jobs report (the next indication of a sharp slowdown in the US economy) have led to the sharp sell-off. Prices have also fallen sharply in Japan due to concerns that demand for Japanese products in the US is falling, but also because the period of super-loose monetary policy in Japan is coming to an end.
โบ We are also seeing a very high VIX (fear index that measures volatility in the S&P 500) - the highest level the VIX has reached since March 2020, shortly after the Federal Reserve's emergency measures during the COVID-19 pandemic. This shows that the market really is extremely nervous - which will lead to further strong waves of selling. We are now selling the Nasdaq and expect selling to return.

โบ "Sell the spike" should be the right strategy for the moment, as markets remain extremely nervous after today's extreme losses on the global stock markets - especially in Asia / Japan. In Japan, shares fell today (in a single day) by the most since 1987. Confidence in a sustainable recovery is very low.
โบ It was an eventful last week and it all culminated in Friday's NFP report, which was much weaker than expected and reinforced expectations of a sharp slowdown in the US economy and a rapidly weakening US labor market.
โบ The Fed is now under pressure to cut rates with more clarity and provide a clear outlook for monetary easing. While the market wants a simultaneous rate cut, any excessive rate cut or a much dovish outlook would be taken as a sign that the Fed sees a troubled US economy that needs support - which won't really alleviate the current panic. For now, there is no easy way out of the current sharp correction.
โบ US stock futures are well into negative territory, suggesting that the Nasdaq 100 is set for its biggest opening fall in more than four years. However, further selling is more likely as investors try to avoid losses in an even deeper sell-off before markets can stabilize.
โบ We made a mega profit with our Nasdaq SHORT overnight (or over the weekend) and are now entering SHORT again. We are positioning ourselves SHORT in the area near 17700 and see resistance in this area.

โ๏ธ Sharp global stock losses accelerated at the start of the week, led by losses in tech; Japanese stocks post worst losses since 1987
โบ Last week's heavy losses on the global stock markets accelerated further on Monday, with tech stocks in particular suffering heavy losses. The Nasdaq 100 is currently 2.5% lower in pre-market trading after Japanese stocks fell by the most in more than a decade. Nasdaq 100 futures plunged as much as 6.5% in overnight trading and were on the verge of triggering a break before the sharp drop was limited to around 3%. The S&P 500 fell by as much as 2%. Losses were concentrated in tech stocks, which were also sharply lower in pre-market trading, such as Nvidia (-5.2%), Broadcom (-5.5%) or Apple (-4.3%), Microsoft (-3.5%), Alphabet (-3.0%). Berkshire Hathaway reduced its stake in Apple by almost 50%, which also weighed on sentiment.
โบ The European benchmark index Stoxx 600 slumped by 2.4%, recording its biggest three-day fall since June 2022, while the MSCI Emerging Markets Equity Index plummeted by more than 3%, recording its biggest one-day fall since March 2022. Japan's Topix equity index lost 12%, its biggest three-day drop since 1959, while the Nikkei fell 12.4% alone today, its worst plunge since 1987 and the biggest point loss in its entire history. The JPY rose 2% as investors saw the Fed under pressure to cut rates faster, while the Bank of Japan promised to do the opposite and raise rates gradually to combat rising price pressures in Japan.
โบ The latest jitters came after Friday's data showed a slowdown in the US labor market, adding to concerns about a sharp slowdown in the US economy that could lead to a recession. Investment banks are revising their forecasts for US monetary policy and calling for earlier, larger or further rate cuts. Expectations are rising for an unusually large move of half a percentage point (50 basis points) at one of the next meetings to support growth.
โบ Otherwhere, oil prices continued their slide from a seven-month low driven by the sell-off in financial markets and concerns about a slowing global economy which clashed with rising tensions in the Middle East. Israel is bracing itself for a possible attack by Iran and regional militias in retaliation for the assassination of Hezbollah and Hamas officials. Cryptocurrencies also recorded heavy losses due to the current strong risk aversion - Bitcoin lost almost 25% of its value over the weekend (Ethereum even lost more than 30%). Gold has changed relatively little - it rose sharply in overnight trading and is now back at $2.425/oz.

We have survived this sharp market slump with massive gains, while probably well over 95% of market participants suffered heavy losses. We can only congratulate ourselves on this and it shows that we can make (large) profits in any market - especially if the market follows fundamentals. We have made a lot of profit in the last two days with these large fluctuations and the "historic" slumps.
Our still open gold position is back in profit - deep in profit if you got in (or with a re-entry) below $2,435. We should have set a TP here - but we see gold generally remaining strongly supported fundamentally. I'm actually surprised gold didn't rally more today given the crashing USD and falling yields. However, falling commodity prices and the "sell-everything" sentiment have also weighed on gold somewhat - despite the increasing geopolitical tensions.
Our Nasdaq 100 SHORT was very well in profit in the meantime, but recovered somewhat shortly before the close (only to fall again somewhat in after-hours trading). I would have been happier if we had closed the position in the 18350 - 18380 range, but it is likely that the current selloff will only continue in early Monday trading.
Congratulations again - what a week ๐ค

โบ Today it was the other way around - we saw more selling by investors and traders in pre-market trading, we prepared for more dip buying and traded against this short-term trend - in the end we were right again and the dip buying took over and drove the Nasdaq well into the green - especially driven by gains in Meta (+ 4.5%) and Nvidia (+ 4.1%).
โบ Investors sold stocks ahead of the NYSE open as they saw yields and the USD rise - we took this as a positive sign of lower demand for safe havens (bonds).
โบ After initial stronger gains, we are now seeing some profit taking. Our Nasdaq 100 LONG has triggered our TP at 18149.40 (or at 18173.30). We are buying the current dip and expect the current profit taking to end in further dip buying.
โบ We see broad price gains in New York - but led by tech stocks, as we expected. We are also now seeing a lower VIX, which shows that the nervous market is calming down to some extent - reducing the risk of a very sharp, rapid sell-off.
Congratulations - we are trading this chaotic market with extreme precision.

๐น The Nasdaq 100 (+0.7%) is hovering near 18000, but should initially post further gains as investors follow the investment banks' buy recommendations for the major technology stocks and solid earnings reports from various sectors, including Palantir, Yum Brands, UBER, Lucid, Caterpillar and the freight railroad company CSX. We adjust our TP slightly โ
: 18149.40.
โบ We participate in early US trading today and buy Meta, which is trading at the level before last Wednesday's earnings report. Meta rose about 7% (up to 11% intraday) after the social media giant beat estimates for revenue and earnings and issued better-than-expected guidance for the current period. All these gains are lost.
โบ Meta continues to gain market share in the digital ad market, the company's core business. Advertising revenue, which largely comes from the Facebook and Instagram apps, increased by 22% year-on-year, significantly outpacing the revenue growth of its biggest competitor Google (Alphabet), which recorded revenue growth of 11% in Google Ad Sales, with YouTube growing slower than expected.
โบ In addition, Meta has improved its operating margin, including a further reduction in headcount and expenses. I still consider Meta to be best-of-class among the major technology stocks and see short-term dip-buy potential. Investment firm Loop also recommends Meta as a "BUY" and has raised its price target to $575 (from $550) - more headwinds for the social media giant. We see an entry in the $487.50 - $481.00* range (with Meta currently trading around 0.8% higher in pre-market trading but likely to dip slightly first - which we take advantage of).

We positioned us incredibly well on Friday, taking care not to hold a LONG position in the stock market while many investors positioned for a strong rebound for this week by buying dips on Friday - they woke up with gigantic losses today. We brought a Nasdaq 100 SHORT into the week that opened deep in profit today (or closed in your TP + potential slippage).
Nearly 100% of investors who were still invested lost a lot of money today. We did the opposite and traded today's swings extremely well and were able to profit from the high volatility. There were a lot of bull traps today - although we could have really traded even the short-term rebound in some tech stocks (e.g. Apple or Nvidia) today.
We have traded these chaotic markets, which have caused global investors/investment banks many losses, with extreme precision, reducing our risk (please set an in profit/break even SL for positions if they are well in profit as markets are particularly volatile at the moment). We are absolute unicorns - that we are not only not losing money in these markets but making massive profits - congratulations! ๐

SELL NOW ๐ฝ DAX (GER_40) ๐ฉ๐ช
โบ Wall Street will close significantly lower, giving the Asian markets no positive handover tomorrow - some of which have experienced a historic slump today (but also a historic recovery of the Nikkei in after-hours trading). The potential for further heavy losses and a renewed slide in Japanese equities is very high, which is why it makes sense to hold a short position in a future. We now see the DAX slightly above the closing price in after-hours trading and are positioning ourselves SHORT.
โบ Michael opened a SHORT position in the Nikkei 225 - in my opinion also a good trade (now at 33100), as the Nikkei has risen by more than 1600 (!) points after one of the strongest after-hours rallies in the history of the Nikkei (strongest in points).
โบ We open a SHORT position in the DAX at 17350 (more than 300 points above today's lows) and expect poor German factory orders tomorrow to add to concerns about a contraction (after a brief rebound) in the German economy.
โบ The weakness in Asia and the US, as well as in Europe anyway, is weighing heavily on the export-driven German economy. The recently stronger EUR is also a headwind for the DAX.
๐ฃ๏ธ Tip: Multiply your usual trade size by ~ 5 - 7 (500% - 700%) when trading the DAX (GER_40)

The Nasdaq saw modest gains but is now seeing the return of selling. It is likely that we will see more worries ahead of tomorrow's Asian session, including concerns about more yen "strength" which could lead to further sharp losses in the already crashing Japanese markets. The Nikkei 225 managed to claw back 10% of its massive losses in after-hours (absolute crazy move), opening the door for renewed losses tomorrow.
Congratulations - it's incredible how well we've already positioned ourselves in the stock market on Friday and traded the swings today ๐

BUY NOW ๐ผ Gold (XAU/USD)๐ฅ
โ ๏ธ Very High Volatility; Increased Risk
โบ Our gold position(s) have reached the TP. We saw the gold price continue to rise and briefly rise above $2,410, now back below our TP also due to a significant rebound in yields. We are buying back in here at ~$2,400.
โบ The price of gold fell in volatile trading today as investors liquidated also their gold positions amid the general and very sharp sell-off in equities. Investors have to cover margin calls on other assets which can lead to gold prices fall despite a surge of demand for safe havens. From a fundamental perspective, however, gold remains well supported and is also becoming more attractive as a safe haven - especially as bond yields are falling and the outlook for equities is deteriorating due to increasing concerns about a global economic slowdown.
โบ Gold also faced headwinds from other industrial and precious metals, which slipped sharply: Silver and platinum are still trading more than 4% lower today. Palladium has also fallen by 3% - all of these metals are widely used in the automotive industry, for example (especially palladium/platinum), and are generally more sensitive to the economic outlook than gold.
โบ Gold is still down 1.75% for today and has still / more room to recover.
๐ฃ๏ธ Tip: Multiply your usual trade size by ~ 0.35 - 0.5 (35% - 50%) when trading gold (XAU/USD) / reduced trading size due to high volatility.

โ ๏ธ Very High Volatility; Increased Risk
โบ Gold has now fallen further (significantly, following the other precious metals) as investors pull out their money from the market across the board. Gold is also facing headwinds from the prices of industrial metals - including silver, which is falling sharply amid growing concerns about a slowing global economy.
โบ It is true that it is very difficult to catch a falling knife - and gold is no exception. The gold price continues to be supported by the sharp fall in yields, which are now at a 52-week low. Yields on 10-year Treasury have fallen by more than 10 basis points as expectations rise that the Fed will have to cut interest rates faster to support the US economy/labor market.
โบ The USD is also falling, with the DXY down almost 0.8 %.
โบWe see and respect that gold is currently very volatile (just like all other assets). It could be that gold falls further towards $2,350 - $2,355 before it finds support. But gold will recover. We are trading gold a bit smaller than usual, but it is right to buy gold here (now at ~$2,365).
๐ฃ๏ธ Tip: Multiply your usual trade size by ~ 0.35 - 0.5 (35% - 50%) when trading gold (XAU/USD) / reduced trading size due to high volatility.

We have seen one of the worst days for equities in Asia - especially in Japan. The Nikkei lost 12.4% today - the worst day in percentage terms since "Black Monday" in 1987 or the worst loss in points in its entire history (4,451.28 points below Friday's close).
The Nasdaq also fell as much as 6% in early trading. I see some of you are still SHORT in the Nasdaq 100 - if so, your position is incredibly deep in profit and you should bring it home soon (or it's closed at ~18170 with slippage / 18261.70 without slippage). We are seeing over losses in the Nasdaq - and a small rebound. We see extreme uncertainty / angst in the market, which will make it difficult for the markets to recover sustainably from this very strong correction. We will see dip buying, which in turn will be met by waves of profit-taking.

No update - especially the profits with gold and indices (Forex with still 100% success rate for more than 50 days) were huge this week - only the Dow Jones was pain (even though most of you closed much earlier). We are back over 81% success rate for the last 5 weeks - that's incredibly good - especially with the current turbulent markets.
Again, important reminder: never lose more than 2.5% to a maximum (!) of 5% of your balance in a single trade (including pot. re-entry = same trade).
