We see a mixed report. Core inflation MoM is surprisingly higher than expected at 0.3% vs. 0.2% expected. YoY headline inflation is slightly cooler than expected at 2.5% vs. 2.6% expected.

Overall, the report is in line with our expectations and further reduces expectations for a 50bp rate cut. Once again, analysts were too optimistic here.

We will see a muted reaction in equities. The USD will be supported by the data, which will also put pressure on USD-sensitive assets such as gold.

We can stay LONG in the Nasdaq, but close soon or now (break-even).

Analysts are optimistic that that the monthly report on US consumer prices will show another month of muted increases. Core inflation (excluding food and energy) and headline inflation is expected to both rose 0.2% in August following similar advances in July. This would represent a 3.2% gain on an annual basis for the core measure.

We expect that the picture of inflation being less of a problem for the Fed is further increasing. However, I don't see significant relieve here with investors being already optimistic. If anything, the data will reduce the likelihood of a rate cut by 50 basis points - which would provide some tailwinds to the USD in coming days.

❗️ Global markets mixed; Europe higher; Investors await US CPI Report

► European markets edged higher with the Stoxx 600 climbing 0.3% as investors cautiously await the upcoming US inflation report. However, the UK’s GDP for July showed zero growth, with industrial production declining by 0.8%, indicating persistent economic challenges. Bond yields also moved lower, with the UK’s 10-year yield down by 5 basis points to 3.77%, and Germany’s yield falling by 4 basis points to 2.11%. Shares of Commerzbank AG soared over 17% during early European trading following the news that UniCredit Group acquired a 4.49% stake in Commerzbank from the German government. Shares of Zara’s parent company, Inditex rose more than 3% after it reported its first half results with net income jumping by 10.1% YoY, to €2.8 billion.

► US stock futures dropped on Wednesday morning ahead of the release of crucial CPI data. S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures fell by 0.25% and 0.30%, respectively. Investors are digesting the first presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, which seemed to dampen market sentiment and has been described as "exhausting" to watch by our Chief Analyst. However, analysts are mostly optimistic about the upcoming CPI data (12:30 UTC+0) which is expected to show moderating inflation. SmartTrader Chief Analyst Robert Lindner, however, expects that CPI data further decreases expectations for a larger (50-bps) rate cut. Forecasters expect the US CPI and the core gauge, excluding food and energy, to show another monthly increase of 0.2% for August. This keeps inflation in check with an annual core inflation rate likely at 3.2%.

► Asian markets were mostly negative, with Japan's Nikkei falling 1.6% as sentiment weakened following hawkish comments from a Bank of Japan official regarding potential rate hikes. China’s markets struggled with the Shanghai Composite down 0.92%, though the Shenzhen Component rose slightly. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index dropped 1.53%, driven by broad-based losses across sectors.

► Oil prices recovered slightly after falling (sharply) to their lowest levels since 2021, with WTI Crude trading near $66.7/barrel (spot price). The market remains concerned about oversupply amid weak demand from major consumers like the US and China. Gold, meanwhile, has been able to push a bit away from key level $2,500, as investors turn to safe-haven assets ahead of key inflation data and the Federal Reserve's upcoming decision on interest rates. Gold prices have risen over 0.25% to $2,520/oz. Gold benefits from optimism that US CPI data continues to shoe moderating inflation in the US.

We are still maintaining our success rate (in the five-week period) at an actually impossible level and will head back towards 89% in the next two days. I would have liked to close Meta today (like JNJ & LLY - we were on the lucky end with LLY, as the pharma giant saw mostly profit taking after the strong opening) - In the medium term, Meta remains bullish, but disappointed today considering the strong performance of other AI stocks. It would have been much better to trade Nvidia on Friday - also for the short term.

“Hi Robert - since I joined Smarttrader, I know what a load of garbage all the rest is (..) Fred-Trading (who does a lot of advertising - I see his ads at least 5 times a day) posts such garbage (..) The fact is that none of these social media “experts” have any idea what they are doing. I think it's a real shame that they deceive so many people with their “analyses” - it makes me really angry (..)

► We buy the dip in gold to (again) almost $2,500. After testing $2,515, gold saw profit-taking. The gold price continues to move in a narrow trading range and remains linked to the key $2,500 level.

► We are still seeing a stronger USD weighing on the gold price, as well as a sharp drop in commodity prices - energy prices in particular plummeted after OPEC lowered its demand forecast for the second time in two months. Demand concerns have grown recently due to slowing demand from the number one oil importer, China, and have been exacerbated by China's impressive and accelerating shift to electric vehicles. At the same time, Europe's largest car manufacturer Volkswagen AG ended job protection for employees in Germany as part of its cost-cutting measures - a further sign of the weakness of cars with combustion engines in particular (as well as a very tough EV industry with strong competition and low margins).

We saw an almost untradeable market today where it was particularly important to find good entries. We did just that and traded the difficult markets extremely well today - including a very good Nasdaq LONG position from Friday. Some of you also bought Nvidia last week (as recommended / I also bought for medium term). We can slightly tighten SL & TP of our still open gold position - we found the perfect entry point. My first gold position closed unlucky at 2501.13, but almost all of you closed perfectly at TP - 2493.53.

⚠️ Increased Risk; US CPI ahead

► We see very subdued markets as investors await the US CPI data (12:30 UTC+0).

► I expect the markets to initially take the US CPI data positively as there are more signs that inflation is now less of a problem and the Fed can focus on supporting the US labor market instead. The big risk - especially for the rest of the month (before the actual rate decision) - is that the markets continue to lower expectations for a 50 basis point rate cut. I still think this is very unlikely (a large rate cut) as such a cut would also send a signal that the US economy is in desperate need of support and would dramatically increase concerns that the Fed has cut rates too slowly.

► Overall, however, the US economy is doing well. The US consumer remains robust. Corporate sales growth is healthy. Combined with a clear outlook for interest rate cuts - which will not change today after the CPI data - I see enough reason overall to remain optimistic.

► There are good reasons why inflation has cooled further - including much lower energy prices, but also a rare rise in rental prices in July (by 0.4% MoM) and the recent increases in car insurance, which have risen between 1% and 2% every month (!) for some time - I think this outlier in inflation will continue to cool. Recently, there have also been few signs of rapid wage inflation.

► We remain cautious - trading slightly smaller - working with an SL, but overall expect a positive reaction to the US CPI data for the time being. We find an entry near our triggered TP (for yesterday's SHORT position) - below 18800 (current price 18785), with the Nasdaq still down more than 0.25% for today.

🗣️ Tip: Multiply your usual trade size by ~ 3.5- 5 (350% - 500%) when trading the Nasdaq (NAS100) - 3/4 trading size.

❗️ Market sentiment remains cautiously optimistic ahead of US CPI data later this week

► European stocks showed positive movement as the Stoxx Europe 600 gained 0.2%. Pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca plunged over 5% after mixed results from its lung cancer drug trial. Investors are cautiously awaiting the European Central Bank’s rate decision later this week (Wednesday), while the EUR remained steady. The UK unemployment rate improved slightly to 4.1%. Germany’s inflation rate eased to 1.9% in August in-line with preliminary data, as energy price declines offset rising service costs. Germany’s retail sales also posted a 1.8% MoM increase, offering rare positive sentiment in the region.

► US equity futures remained steady after the S&P 500's 1.2% surprise (for us: expected) rise on Monday, bouncing back from a difficult start to September. Investors are anxiously awaiting tomorrow’s CPI data, expected to show a 2.6% annual increase (3.2% for core inflation YoY), marking the smallest rise since 2021. Meanwhile, political uncertainty looms with the upcoming debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, adding to the returned cautionary tone. Treasury yields inched higher in pre-market trading, with the 10-year hitting 3.715% (+1.5 bps) , and the USD strengthened for the third day (DXY up 0.15%).

► In Asia, markets were mixed. China’s Shanghai Composite dropped 0.53% to a seven-month low, impacted by U.S. sanctions on Chinese biotech firms. China also posted a sharp increase in its trade surplus, with exports rising by 8.7%, the highest since March 2023. The slightly stronger USD and US yields edging higher weighs on gold. Bitcoin fell below $57,000 amidst ongoing volatility and after a positive Monday session for cryptos.
