❗️ European & US stocks higher amid strong earnings & ahead of key earnings day; Tesla’s surge boosts Wall Street

► European equities advanced, with the Stoxx 600 rising by 0.6%, bolstered by strong earnings. Barclays posted better-than-expected trading revenue, while Unilever's revenue rose 4.5% in Q3, surpassing forecasts. Germany’s flash PMI showed signs of easing contraction, with the Composite PMI Output Index at 48.4, a two-month high. Services showed growth at 51.4, but manufacturing remained weak despite some improvement. Meanwhile, France's economy continues to contract as the Flash Composite PMI dropped to 47.3, its lowest in nine months, with ongoing political uncertainty and unresolved fiscal challenges weighing on the outlook. The French CAC40 (+0.65%) is boosted by Hermes' strong earnings report (which also pushed other luxury stocks higher) and significant gains of Renault, Stellantis after Tesla's surprisingly strong earnings report. Also German automakers are trading higher.

► U.S. stock futures pointed to gains, lead by Tesla’s stronger-than-expected results, with Nasdaq 100 futures rallying over 0.65%. Tesla surged over 11% in after-hours trading after posting its largest quarterly profit in over a year. Tesla's strong earnings report came as a surprise to analysts, most of whom had remained cautious resulting in Tesla recently suffering significant losses that are now largely reversed. Treasuries gained for the first time this week (= lower yields), while the dollar edged lower. U.S. investors are closely watching the earnings season, with major companies like UPS, American Airlines, and Northrop Grumman set to report. Concerns linger over the pace of Fed policy easing and the overall economic outlook. The upcoming U.S. presidential election remains tight, with Donald Trump and Kamala Harris statistically tied in the key swing states, adding to market uncertainty.

► Asian markets traded flat. Japan’s PMI data showed its fastest output decline in six months, contributing to the subdued market sentiment. The JPY weakened, trading at its lowest levels in three months, as uncertainty around the upcoming general election increased. Meanwhile, Chinese stocks snapped a four-day winning streak amid concerns over Sino-U.S. relations, while Hong Kong's market also dipped after prior gains.

► Oil prices rebounded to $72/barrel following Wednesday’s decline, as traders weighed tensions in the Middle East and the market outlook for 2025. Gold rebounded to $2,735/oz, after its largest drop in 11 weeks, supported by investors locking in profits ahead of the Federal Reserve’s policy meeting. Despite recent volatility, gold remains on track for gains, driven by its strong long-term outlook and ongoing uncertainty.

► We traded the difficult market exceptionally well today and also found strong entries. We closed three index shorts at a profit today (all TP) and are now sell again the S&P 500's current recovery attempt - although the S&P 500 has erased almost half of its losses after heavy losses in the last US trading session.

► Yields and the USD stabilized – which in particular helped the heavily sold growth/big tech stocks to temporarily bottom out. We expect the selling to return and also no profit report from Tesla - which makes for optimism in the cyclical sector and reduces concerns about a global economic slowdown / cooling consumer spending. However, it's too risky to trade Tesla here because we can't know what the market really expects and how it will react to announcements. We can't trade the pure numbers alone.

► We can go SHORT now or take advantage from the increased volatility when some important companies report on Wall Street (including Tesla, T-Mobile US, IBM, ServiceNow). We expect mixed results that will not restore optimism, but could push the S&P 500 to the 5820-5825 area in the short term.

► Gold was certainly overbought in the last few sessions, as new ATHs were constantly causing FOMO buying. Gold also rose while the DXY / yields rose (which usually means direct headwinds for gold). Also today, yields have risen again and the USD has continued to move upwards.

► We are now seeing the long overdue wave of profit taking with investors locking in profits and raising their margins (also due to potential headwinds for equities).

► It's very hard to catch a falling knife, but we expect gold to hit support soon and are venturing here (which is very difficult) and buying completely against the market/trend. Gold will also benefit very soon from buying due to the still very positive medium/long-term outlook.

► A sharper correction in silver (more than 3.3% down) is also weighing on gold - I see little additional short-term downside potential for silver (at least for today). We expect gold to find support in the range $2,710 - $2,715 (with further rising support towards $2,700).

We expect investors to remain cautious today as signs are mounting that we are heading for more difficult times for equities – with increasing uncertainty about the interest rate outlook, possibly continued high inflation (in the US) and a slowing global economy, while we already see a very expensive stock market and Wall Street. Optimism in China also seemed to be short-lived.


► We perfectly timed the turnaround in the stock market by closing our last LONG positions at a profit (near ATH) and then opening SHORT positions. We closed our second Nasdaq 100 SHORT from yesterday well in profit earlier today - we are also SHORT in Europe with the DAX (we found a great entry point).

► We continue to position ourselves SHORT and take advantage of the volatility of the NYSE opening. We are positioning ourselves SHORT in the S&P 500, which has proven to be the most stable today - thanks in part to the strong weighting of Microsoft in the 500-stock index. We expect further headwinds from mixed earnings reports – including from Starbucks, Boeing and Coca-Cola. Tesla, the first tech mega-cap, will report later today. McDonald's is also weighing on the S&P 500 (and even more on the Dow Jones) after its connection to the E. Coli outbreak. We sell the S&P 500 during increased volatility (within the first 20 - 30 minutes after NYSE opening).

❗️ Stocks & bonds dip on rising uncertainty including the rate outlook & mixed European earnings

► European stocks declined, with the Stoxx 600 edging lower by over 0.2%. Investors are cautiously navigating corporate earnings and the rate outlook. Germany’s SAP rose by as much as 5.6% on strong quarterly results, providing a positive counterbalance to the overall mixed earnings season. Nearly 47% of MSCI Europe companies reported earnings below expectations. Meanwhile, Germany's 10-year yield rose 4 basis points to 2.32%, reflecting broader market concerns.

► US utures declined, with the S&P 500 dipping 0.2%, poised for its first consecutive drop in six weeks as traders reassess the pace of potential Fed rate cuts. Treasury yields climbed, with the 10-year yield rising 3 basis points to 4.21%, extending gains on Monday. Investors are also weighing the inflationary effects of a possible Trump election win, which could lead to looser fiscal policy and increased tariffs, potentially pushing inflation higher.

► Asia-Pacific markets closed mostly lower today, reflecting cautious global sentiment. The MSCI AC Asia Pacific Index fell by 1.1%, driven by declines in Japan (-1.44%) and Australia (-1.54%). ► Israel confirmed yesterday that it had killed Hashem Safieddine, the ‘heir apparent’ to the late Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in an Israeli attack on the Iranian-backed Lebanese militant group last month.

► We see that stocks in New York are widening their pre-market losses (our Nasdaq 100 SHORT has reached our TP for a nice profit). European stocks continue to move sideways after losses in early European trading.

► A strong performance by German chip company Infineon (up more than 4% - boosted by yesterday's report from Texas Instruments) leads to a significant outperformance of the DAX compared to its European peers. I see no lasting tailwind for the chip sector today - despite a strong report from TSMC in the previous week, which followed disappointing earnings and guidance from ASML.

► The DAX is benefiting from a further weakening EUR as the market gradually adopts the view we have held for almost half a year - which is that the ECB will continue on the rate-cutting path as the Eurozone economy continues to struggle.

► We are selling the DAX near flatline (which is at 19430 for today) and continue to see selling in the 19400 - 19500 area with probably some more headwinds ahead. We also see investment banks becoming more cautious as valuations on Wall Street remain very high. Goldman Sachs forecasts that the S&P 500 will only return 3% over the next ten years (compared to an average annual return of 13% over the last 10 years).

► Higher yields indicate increasingly cautious investors - the outlook for further price gains in New York (as well as in Europe) is darkening.

❗️ European stocks / Wall Street down slightly ahead of important earnings day & further rising yields

► European stocks are extending recent losses with the Stoxx 600 trading 0.25% lower, reflecting caution amid a busy earnings day. Deutsche Bank shares fell despite the bank returning to profitability in Q3, posting an EPS of €0.81 (vs €0.60 expected) and revenues of €7.5 billion. Corporate giants like AkzoNobel, Heineken, and Roche are set to report earnings. France’s CAC40 (-0.5%), Germany’s DAX40 (-0.15%), UK's FTSE100 (-0.25%) are are all trading in the red.

► US stock futures pointed to slight declines as markets awaited earnings reports from Tesla, Boeing, and Coca-Cola. S&P 500 futures traded relatively flat (- 0.1%), while Nasdaq futures traded lower by over 0.15% (Dow Jones at -0.35%). Concerns over rising yields, with 10-year Treasuries pushing past 4.2%, continue to weigh on sentiment. Investors are growing cautious, as Federal Reserve officials signal a slower pace of rate cuts amid concerns that inflation could reaccelerate.

► Asian stocks showed mixed performance, with Chinese shares rising on the back of a proposed 2 trillion CNY market stabilization fund. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained 1.3%, driven by financial institutions tapping PBoC swap facilities. Gold prices rose further, rising above $2,755 for the first time (record highs), as investors seek safe-haven assets ahead of further Fed decisions. Sorry for the late last post. I didn't eat all day and was quick at the golden 〽️😅 - while I was talking to a former colleague of mine (he is an analyst at one of the top 3 US investment banks) and Michael from the SmartTrader analyst team.

I'll be back to 100% tomorrow as well. We made a great trade with Apple (again), but closed it far too early (although many of you at least closed better than me). Far too cautious - especially since we expected Apple to do well in this general, somewhat more defensive environment.

We can update our second Nasdaq 100 (SHORT) - which is currently break-even, but likely to go down a bit in early Asian trading - with unspectacular earnings from Texas Instrument (which could lead to moderate additional profit-taking in the chip sector tomorrow).

PS: I changed my main CFD broker myself - so it looks a bit different now (and in the future).

► We are selling the outperformance of the Nasdaq, which is now trading almost flat. We see weak market breadth - especially among growth stocks - with only Nasdaq heavyweight Microsoft trading well in the green after the presentation of new AI functions.

► We expect trading to remain cautious, with (short-term) market sentiment remaining rather negative and global equities also posting losses.

► With signs of a renewed slowdown in global consumer demand, investors are becoming increasingly cautious. Although the massive Chinese stimulus measures have supported Chinese equities in recent weeks (although there have been repeated waves of profit-taking here too), they have also increased concerns about a return of global inflation - especially as China itself probably sees plenty of scope for a looser monetary policy in view of deflationary consumer and producer prices.

► Rate cut expectations have fallen and yields are rising again slightly (we have also seen higher yields in Europe). We see a change in sentiment on Wall Street, which could suffer back-to-back losses for the first time since early September (!) (two consecutive negative days). A correction seems long overdue - the fact that Wall Street has not had two negative days in a row since the beginning of September shows that much of the current bull market is already driven by “greed” - especially as we have seen some fundamental headwinds. Overall, however, sentiment remains rather optimistic in the medium term - but the signs for now point towards further profit taking.

► Higher oil prices (despite a stronger USD) also weighs on the growth sector.

► We made a nice Apple LONG yesterday and are now getting back into the world's most valuable company after (another) weak opening. We see Apple trading nearly 1.5% lower at the NYSE open, significantly underperforming the Nasdaq 100 or the broad S&P 500.

► We are seeing generally cautious trading in New York as investors/analysts have further scaled back their rate cut expectations and yields are now even above the levels that prevailed before the Fed's big rate cut in September. However, we see that yields are now stabilizing (they are now even slightly declining after previously being up to 3 basis points higher (for the 10-year US yield). We therefore also see the USD strength taking a pause - positive for the US growth sector.

I'm on the plane ✈️ now - and won't be available for the next 3 1/2 hours as there's no internet on this Ryanair flight. We have no open positions - everything was closed yesterday (in profit). I will be back before NYSE opening (and hopefully back in office) and will be fully back to analyzing the market from then on. We have found the perfect entry point, even though we have once again taken a completely contrarian position - as gold actually hit (temporary) resistance at over $2,737.50. We set an in-profit SL and can slightly extend our TP - but do not see a massive correction here - despite some fundamental headwinds. Gold remains too sentiment driven (and supported by uncertainty).
