► However, we are not seeing a rise in unemployment, which remains at 4.1% (similar to yesterday's initial jobless claims) – even though the number of people who are truly ‘unemployed’ has of course risen, but these people have not registered as unemployed because it is likely to be a temporary situation.

► We are selling the temporary USD weakness here, as (VIP ONLY)/USD is now up almost (VIP ONLY)% and around 120 pips above yesterday's lows (which is significant).

► Average hourly earnings rose by 0.4% MoM vs. 0.3% more than expected – positive for the USD.

❗️ Stocks attempt recovery at the end of a weak & volatile week; NFP data in focus

► European stocks edged higher after sharp losses, with the Stoxx Europe 600 gaining 0.6%, supported by strong gains in the energy sector. Oil majors Shell, Total Energies, and BP rose by more than 1% as oil prices climbed further due to returned tensions in the Middle East. In other news, Reckitt Benckiser Group soared 10% after a favorable court ruling involving its infant formula business. However, the Stoxx 600 remains on track for its largest weekly decline in two months, reflecting the broader market’s volatility ahead of key economic events next week. Market sentiment in Europe also remains cautious due to the upcoming US election, which is contributing to the high valuations, concerns about economic uncertainty until the end of the year and even signs of a return of inflation - now also in Europe.

► US futures showed slight gains as investors await the release of key nonfarm payroll data, with forecasts suggesting slower job growth. Positive earnings from Amazon and Intel boosted premarket sentiment, though Apple shares declined on weak demand from China. The release of the US nonfarm payroll report today is expected to show 100,000 new jobs in October, keeping investors’ focus on the labor market’s strength. The lower-than-expected figure for weekly initial jobless claims on Thursday underpinned the thesis that the US labor market remains robust and that the Fed will only cut interest rates gradually. US energy giants Exxon Mobil and Chevron are benefiting from higher oil prices - Exxon reported a rather mixed earnings report while Chevron beat expectations (both today).

► Asian markets were mixed, led by losses in Japan. Japanese equities fell sharply, mirroring Wall Street’s decline in tech stocks and sluggish regional earnings. In contrast, Chinese stocks rose, boosted by improved property sales and the Caixin Manufacturing PMI, which unexpectedly returned to expansion, signaling positive effects from Beijing’s stimulus efforts. Hong Kong also gained 1.57% - even despite the sharp losses in US tech - reversing losses from earlier in the week.

► Oil prices rose to near $71/barrel as renewed Middle East tensions raised concerns about supply disruptions, with reports of Iran planning a retaliatory strike through Iraqi militias. The OPEC+ decided to postpone a planned production increase to not further increase the market's perception of oversupply. WTI crude oil is back to levels from early October. Meanwhile, gold prices saw significant profit-taking yesterday, but finding support below $2,750/oz. According to SmartTrader Chief Analyst Robert Lindner, gold will attract again buyers today and early next week given ongoing geopolitical risks, uncertainty around the US election and the overall positive medium-/long-term outlook. Higher yields, however, continue to weigh on gold, increasing the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets.

We have found an excellent entry point after the PCE data also showed signs that inflation in the US is not only remaining stubbornly high, but may be accelerating again. ► Microsoft and Meta are weighing on the Nasdaq after both companies reported solid profits but gave a rather weak outlook. Meta also reported a miss in daily active users (DAU) and said that AI spending will continue to grow in 2025 - which also led to Meta raising its fiscal 2024 capital expenditure guidance to $38 - $40bn, up from $37 - $40bn.

► We expect some profit-taking today and are already seeing some selling in the premarket. Although ‘such’ risk sentiment is generally good for Apple - and Apple is opening almost unchanged - the latest earnings reports will increase investor concerns that Apple could also deliver a weak forecast and report higher expenses. Concerns about signs of weak iPhone sales could also weigh on Apple before the earnings report (after the bell).

► We are also shorting the outperformance of (VIP ONLY). Although I value the (VIP ONLY) for medium-/long-term investments and see it in very good shape, similar to (VIP ONLY), we see some headwinds in the broader market and general concerns about the outlook for equities, which could reduce demand for(VIP ONLY) and (VIP ONLY) after a very strong previous quarter (although (VIP ONLY)). The EUR benefited greatly today from better-than-expected Eurozone economic data, but even more so from a surprising re-acceleration of inflation (in Spain but even more in Germany).

► At the same time, US GDP growth data fell slightly short of expectations, somewhat reducing the impression that the US economy is / remains significantly outperforming Europe (which it is).

► There was also a decline in yields, but this is now reversing as US Treasury yields are now almost unchanged (-2 basis points).

► The DAX benefited strongly from improved Chinese economic data and price gains in China, as there are signs that the latest stimulus measures from Beijing may have boosted growth. The important Caixin Manufacturing PMI for October came as a surprise and showed that the Chinese manufacturing sector could be expanding again (albeit minimally of course).

► Nevertheless, I foresee further losses for Europe, even before the weekend with a long list of uncertainties, including the upcoming US elections, political unrest in Germany, Iran's possible attempt to escalate the conflict in the Middle East and this week's signs that the ECB may be more cautious with rate cuts as disinflation has ended (it is still above 2%).

► We see a rise in the VIX - a sign of continued caution in the market leading to volatility. We also see yields rising - it has been the worst few months for bonds in two years - which also shows that the market is increasingly pricing in less room for aggressive rate cuts by global central banks.

► We sell the recovery attempt near Wednesday's close. We also see higher energy prices - no benefit, just a headwind for the energy sector looking forward for the German DAX.

Sorry for the delay – I had a quick e-meeting with a former colleague of mine (who now works at a US investment firm as an in-house equity/fixed-income trader).

We traded very well today – very strong timing ⏱, exceptional NYSE opening trades. We saw the markets we expected (correctly called yesterday already). Great profits in indices (I held a small Nasdaq SHORT for the last two days – you can see it in my closed positions). We also extended our Forex winning streak (to now 20 consecutive successful FX trades) and closed our EUR/USD positions with profit. We are maintaining the current TP for our gold position and tightening the TP for our WTI position (TP off profit). For tomorrow, we expect further (mainly) sentiment-driven buying for gold and also oil in the second half of the day. Otherwise, the oil price fell during Asian trading.

► Wall Street fell sharply today - as we expected - because the shadow expectations for the earnings of the big tech and AI companies are much higher than the reported reality and, in addition, the earnings forecasts of Microsoft and Meta were seen as disappointing and do not point to see massive revenue growth, which the market wants to see, reinforcing concerns that valuations have risen too quickly. Especially as AI investments remain high, which will have a negative impact on the operating margin in the medium term.

►The Nasdaq 100 is down more than 2.0%, with the ‘Magnificent Seven’ / tech mega-caps even down more than 3% overall, weighing heavily on the Nasdaq 100 and S&P 500.

► We see the Dow Jones down ‘only’ -0.5% for the day after a rebound of more than 250 points from the day's low and thanks to a rotation into more defensive sectors, such as health, pharmaceuticals and consumer staples (which are overrepresented in the Dow Jones).

► We are selling the recovery attempt here at 42000+ and expect the outsized losses in the technology sector to spread to the other sectors, causing the current correction in the global equity market to continue for a while. In addition, we are seeing yields rising again (as we predicted yesterday), which is putting additional pressure on equities and strengthening the USD again – we also predicted this correctly yesterday.

► These are overall solid numbers for us (our positioning), but we see little reaction in the USD overall - even though the data on initial jobless claims showed a further decline in applications for unemployment benefits. The labor market data is robust - even the continuing initial jobless claims fell instead of continuing to rise as expected. The overall data gives slight tailwinds to the USD + yields, as it reduces the prospects of rapid interest rate cuts by the Fed.

► We are selling the Nasdaq here, as yesterday's big tech earnings reports (from Microsoft & Meta) are still weighing on sentiment and the chip sector is being sold off further. We also see generally rising yields (also outside of the US) with rising signs that inflation makes a small comeback.

❗️ Equities fall further after Microsoft & Meta post-earnings losses; Apple & Amazon next; US PCE data in focus

► European stocks experienced a downtrend, marking the third consecutive day of losses as the Stoxx 600 slipped over 0.8%. French lender BNP Paribas led the declines, dropping over 7% following a weak Q3 earnings report. Additionally, European reacted negatively to more signs of a re-acceleration of inflation in the Eurozone that could impact future European Central Bank decisions on rate cuts. France’s inflation for October rose slightly above expectations to 1.2%, while Germany saw retail sales increase by 1.2% MoM in September, with import prices down by 1.3% YoY. Eurozone inflation YoY (preliminary data) rose back to 2% (from 1.7% in September) and came above the 1.9% expected. Core inflation remained at 2.7% YoY - still above the ECB's 2% target.

► US futures are down, with the Nasdaq contracts falling by more than 0.9%, as unimpressive earnings from Microsoft and Meta (weakness in daily active users) weighed on sentiment. Pre-market losses for Microsoft and Meta, both down abou 4%, contributed significantly to Nasdaq’s decline. The USD Index stayed robust, poised for its largest monthly gain since 2022, as upbeat GDP and jobs data from Wednesday curbed expectations of rapid Fed rate cuts. Amazon and Apple are set to report earnings today, further intensifying market anticipation amid a week of volatility. Focus will also be on US PCE data the Fed's preferred inflation indicator. A re-acceleration of inflation would further weigh on risk sentiment.

► Asian stocks mostly trended down, with Japan, Australia, and South Korea witnessing losses, adding to the region's worst monthly performance since August 2023. The Bank of Japan (BOJ) held its interest rate steady amid heightened political uncertainty and a weak economic outlook. Meanwhile, the JPY strengthened below 153 per USD following speculation of intervention. Chinese markets were mixed; while mainland shares showed moderate changes, the Hang Seng in Hong Kong rose after China’s manufacturing PMI entered (slightly) expansionary territory for the first time since April, driven by stimulus efforts.

► Oil prices decreased to $68.5/barrel, reacting to potential Middle East stability. Gold prices also declined after setting a fresh record in the prior session, with prices sitting around $2,780/oz. SmartTrader Chief Analyst Robert Lindner expected short-term resistance at $2,800, which we actually saw yesterday and today. 🔹 The Nasdaq (- 0.20%) / S&P 500 (- 0.15%) both edge further down. Yesterday we found a very good entry point into the Nasdaq 100 (against the market) and maintain our TP for the time being / or update it slightly ✅ @: 20520.60. We see strong losses in Europe after the markets in China and Hong Kong also closed weak. =⚠️ OUTDATED / delayed


► I am very tempted to SHORT Alphabet here - which opened about 7% higher after a very solid earnings report yesterday - but the stock will remain very volatile - we can potentially find a good entry in the 183 - 185 area. Besides, with our two SHORTS in the Nasdaq 100 and the S&P 500, we are already SHORT twice - which makes it a bit of an overkill to trade the additionally volatile Alphabet here (unless we get a very good entry price).

► However, I explicitly warn against falling into FOMO here - many traders will make losses here with LONG positions.

► We want to check the early NYSE opening volatility for better entry prices. I also see short potential in Visa (which also had a strong opening price of almost 3.5%) and possibly in Nvidia, which has performed very well (outperformed and is near ATH) recently but is now coming under pressure from the general strong profit-taking after AMD's unimpressive forecast (although I expect a strong profit report from Nvidia).
