Both Russia and the US want Ukraine to change its government before presenting it with a peace treaty. Assuming they get their wishes, who do they think is going to replace Zelensky? Even more bullish Zaluzhny (PS: he’s been exiled so we’re not sure if he’ll be able to run)? Azov leader Biletsky? There certainly won’t be any pro-Russian candidates and Poroshenko just recently got sanctioned by the government.
Also it’s not like Zelensky is super unpopular too. He polls at around 50% and if the Ukrainian public will feel that they are being forced to pick another president will instead rally around Zelensky like they did in 2022.
This will only drag the war for longer and not achieve anything positive if successful.

I think I know why Trump is doing all of this and it's not about Ukraine (nor is he a Russian puppet).
Russia stands as a significant anti-Western power and a crucial ally of Iran. While Trump maintains a staunchly hawkish stance toward Iran, the current geopolitical reality dictates that Iran relies on Russian support. Should a U.S.-Israeli ground invasion materialize itself, Russia would inevitably supply Iran with weapons, complicating the strategic calculus. Taking Russia out of the picture and hopefully turning it against China as well, is a huge win for the United States and Israel.
Steve Witkoff (one of the key talkers between Moscow and Washington) was also key player in the Hamas-Israel ceasefire treaty. Him being the leading American diplomat to Moscow is no coincidence. What do you think is his motivation?
Think of another thing. Why did the talks occur in Saudi Arabia? Why not Turkey? Why not the EU? Why not somewhere close to Ukraine or even somewhere neutral? Saudi Arabia is a key player in the anti-Iranian and pro-American coalition in the middle east. Trump appears to be forging an anti-Iranian alliance, and the exclusion of Ukraine from these talks suggests that the primary focus was Iran and the broader dynamics of Russian-American relations. This is not a case of the U.S. deliberately sidelining Ukraine from discussions about its own future; rather, Ukraine has no stake in American and Russian relations or plans for Iran.
The Iranians are beginning to take notice and counter signal the talks (why would they if it's supposedly not about them?).
Also, it's not like this hasn't been done before. In 2011 during the latest reset in US-Russia relations, as one of conditions for normalization Russia agreed to impose sanctions on Iran. Trump is looking to achieve the same thing, except this time American and Israeli plans are a lot more grandiose.
Of course, I could be mistaken—Trump may simply be acting out of personal affinity for Putin and disdain for Zelensky. But if that was the case, it wouldn't resemble conventional American realist politics and make an entirely new precedent in history. Liberals seem to think so, but I think they're missing something.
