Canonical does not contribute to Ubuntu Touch in any official capacity. The UBports Foundation does have Canonical's official permission to carry the name Ubuntu in Ubuntu Touch, and also to use the Ubuntu logo, within the lines of Canonical's trademark policies.

hi all :) could someone clarify the relationship between UBports and Canonical for me, or point me to an explainer online? I'm mostly unclear about how much Canonical contributes to current day Ubuntu Touch - does this project still get stuff from upstream or is it functionally a complete fork at this point? does Canonical figure in any of the "official agreements" mentioned with certain phone manufacturers?

Ubuntu Touch is still based on Ubuntu (as the name implies). So the project still gets a lot of stuff from upstream, much the same as for instance Mint and Elementary OS do.

I use it on a daily basis now, but it's not sure it's ready for that for everyone yet. There is no stable release channel yet, and some things are still to come. But it feels glorious coming from Android to me!

Because it means people in the USA can use Ubuntu Touch as an OS for their smart phones and actually *make phone calls* with it. Believe it or not, that is still an important feature for some folks. ;)

Cause now VoLTE is mandatory for making calls in USA. And almost all carriers will follow also in Canada those following months. That's why a "VoLTE call with Ubuntu Touch" in USA is a pretty good new for many people.
