most of the people who do have this specific hardware knowledge are porters— but they have their hands full so they can't take you by the hand for every step........ the porting documentation is made to introduce the basic concepts and eventually leads to you an appropriate place to ask specific questions

call it "required reading" for contacting porters. So the porters aren't bombarded by frequently asked questions that are otherwise answered in the documentation

To sum things up.
There is no official connection between Canonical and the Ubport foundation except they allow us to use the logo and Ubuntu name ONLY in the frame of Ubuntu Touch.
They are clear on the fact that we cannot use it to appear affiliated to the company in any other way.
haha I will certainly paraphrase you! reasons are complex things, my motivations include evaluating viability, health and trustworthiness for me and people I make tech recommendations to (a more completely de-US-tech'd phone stack is increasingly appealing), and also I'm a dev trying to pick a socially useful project where my relative impact will be maximized
