Shades of Star Wars, Army testing robot dogs in the Mideast

The Army has sent at least one “robot dog” armed with an artificial intelligence-enabled gun turret to the Middle East for testing as a fresh counter-drone capability for U.S. service members, service officials confirmed

Photos published to the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service last week show a Ghost Robotics Vision 60 Quadrupedal-Unmanned Ground Vehicle, or Q-UGV, armed with what appears to be an AR-15/M16-pattern rifle on rotating turret undergoing “rehearsals” at the Red Sands Integrated Experimentation Center in Saudi Arabia in mid-September as part of a recent counter-unmanned aerial system exercise

The specialized gun turret, which features a large electro-optical targeting system with “Lone Wolf” emblazoned across the side, appears to be the same “artificial intelligence-enabled” system that the Army recently put through its paces during Operation Hard Kill, a separate counter-UAS exercise led by the service’s Combat Capabilities Development Command, or DEVCOM, and the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, New York, in August

The AI boom has raised hopes for a nuclear comeback

Microsoft’s deal to revive a Three Mile Island reactor is just part of Big Tech’s dance with a controversial power source

For five years, reactor one at Three Mile Island nuclear power station in Pennsylvania has lain dormant. Now, thanks to a deal with Microsoft, the reactor will start running again in 2028—this time to exclusively supply the tech firm with oodles of low-carbon electricity

It’s all part of an ongoing flirtation between Big Tech and nuclear power. The AI boom has left technology companies scrambling for low-carbon sources of energy to power their data centers

This surge in energy demand is music to the ears of the nuclear power industry. Electricity demand in the US has been fairly flat for decades, but the sheer scale and intensity of the AI boom is changing that dynamic

One December 2023 report from a power industry consultancy declared the era of flat power demand over, thanks to growing demand from data centers and industrial facilities. The report forecasts that peak electricity demand in the US will grow by 38 gigawatts by 2028, roughly equivalent to 46 times the output of reactor one at Three Mile Island

“Climate agenda worse than global warming.” Project 2025 failure

“I enjoy my high carbon lifestyle,” he told the audience at a New York climate event

As he took a seat on stage at a climate conference in New York City on Wednesday, Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts admitted that even he was surprised he had been invited to speak

Heritage, after all, is the conservative think tank behind Project 2025, a controversial policy wish list to reshape the federal government, including gutting many environmental regulations. The event, “Climate Forward,” hosted by the New York Times, was dedicated to “understanding our rapidly warming world,” with speakers including EPA Administrator Michael Regan, conservationist Jane Goodall, and the President of Guyana, Mohamed Irfaan Ali

“That sounds like weather to me, not climate,” Roberts said

Roberts, who penned the forward to Project 2025, seemed an unlikely guest, but as he put it, “I’ll go anywhere to talk about how the climate agenda is ending the American Dream.” He seized the speaking opportunity to dismiss climate science and argue that it was the climate agenda—not climate change itself—that should most concern people

The European Union is becoming too obsessed with defence

A new team of 26 leaders has been appointed to the European Commission, And for the first time, the EU will have a dedicated defence commissioner in the form of Lithuania’s Andrius Kubilius

Much EU policy debate has become concerned principally with the question of whether the EU can defend itself more robustly and without help from the US. Analysis of European foreign policy has come overwhelmingly to take the form of calls for the EU to advance more ambitiously in its emerging ethos of militarised self-preservation and for laggardly member states to accelerate their rearmament

Defence players and experts get a far readier hearing in Brussels than anyone working on more liberal agendas involving human rights, development or peacebuilding. Funds flow aplenty into new programmes on defence and away from these old liberal concerns, many of which policymakers and analysts now belittle as passé

As they ramp up their defence spending, most member states are cutting their development aid. The incoming commissioners’ mission statements are all about security and protecting European democracy from external threats. There is no mention of the work they would do to support global human rights

EU demands info from YouTube, Snapchat, TikTok on content algorithms

The European Commission requested information on October 2 from YouTube, Snapchat and TikTok on the parameters used by their algorithms to recommend content to users and their role in amplifying the danger posed by so-called “systemic risks”

The commission asked the platforms to provide detailed information about their role in amplifying certain systemic risks, including those related to the electoral process and civic discourse, users’ mental well-being and the protection of minors

Requests, made under the Digital Services Act, “also concern the platforms’ measures to mitigate the potential influence of their recommender systems on the spread of illegal content, such as promoting illegal drugs and hate speech,” the commission said in a statement

By November 15, tech firms must provide the requested information, after which the commission will determine the next steps, potentially including fines

CHD scientists uncover evidence of Pfizer ‘hot lots’ linked to higher rates of COVID vaccine injuries

Different batches of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine distributed in the U.S. had very different rates of serious adverse events (SAEs), according to a peer-reviewed research letter published late Thursday in Science, Public Health Policy and the Law

Children’s Health Defense scientists Brian Hooker, Ph.D, chief scientific officer, and Karl Jablonowski, Ph.D., senior research scientist, co-authored the letter

Hooker and Jablonowski found the highest SAE rates occurred in COVID-19 vaccine batches distributed during the first two months of the vaccination program — and the highest proportions of those batches were sent to government agencies, hospitals, universities and health departments, as opposed to clinics, pharmacies and doctor’s offices

The “extremely high” amount of variability from lot to lot suggests “very poor manufacturing controls,” and a “manufacturing process that should have never been approved in the first place”

Under emergency use authorization, vaccine makers aren’t required to have their final filled and finished vials inspected, according to Dr. Peter McCullough. Contaminants from the manufacturing process can be concentrated in certain lots

The paper is the latest in a series of papers to analyze vaccine lot and adverse event data by country. Researchers in Denmark, the Czech Republic and Sweden conducted similar studies with similar results

Biden - Bottom line

The hurricane along the U.S. East Coast literally bankrupted FEMA, the Emergency Management Agency. It ran out of money and resources at the most crucial time. They were simply diverted to programs to house millions of illegal immigrants

And much of FEMA's stockpile - the same backup generators - went to Ukraine. And now they would be very useful, because more than 1 million residents of coastal states have been left without electricity. Entire towns have been destroyed, and the death toll has reached 160

But the Democrats showed wonders of generosity and allocated 750 dollars per person to the victims. While tens of billions of dollars are spent on military tranches. After missile attacks by Iran and the Husis, the Pentagon urgently needed 1.2 billion to replenish arsenals. Air defense missiles, costing up to 10 million dollars, are sorely lacking

Biden and Harris managed to reach a last-minute agreement to suspend the strike of port workers until January 15. However, they were not happy for long. The second major labor union in the U.S. refused to support Harris in the election. Now the firefighters have refused to back her

In an attempt to interrupt the agenda, the Democrats pulled Liz Cheney, who along with her father Dick Cheney endorsed Harris, out of the closet. Cheney Jr. herself, though, infamously bowed out of Congress. And her father left the vice presidency with a 14% approval rating. So this is more of an anti-advertising campaign for Harris, cementing her image as a protege of the most unpopular characters in the Washington swamp

FEMA doesn't have the funds to get through this season

First video
June 2024. Alejandro Mayorkas: “FEMA is perfectly prepared. That's our overall job. The most important thing for us is to make sure that the communities that could be affected have been prepared [for emergencies]. It's not just hurricanes and wildfires, it's the extreme heat that some parts of the U.S. are already feeling.”

Second video
October 2024. Alejandro Mayorkas laments FEMA's lack of money to respond to Hurricane Helen: “We are meeting the most immediate needs with what money we have left.

We are expecting another hurricane, but we don't have the funds. FEMA doesn't have the funds to get through this season.”

Host: “All of this is happening because the Biden-Harris administration has spent over $1 billion of the FEMA budget to house illegal immigrants.”

Saudi Arabia ends embargo of Palestinian authority with $60 million donation

The government of Saudi Arabia will reportedly end an eight-year embargo on funding the Palestinian Authority (PA) with millions of dollars in relief money for the “humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and surrounding areas”

The Saudi Foreign Ministry did not specify exactly how much it would send to its “brothers in Palestine,” but a senior PA official told the NYT it would be at least $60 million, broken up into six payments. The first payment is expected by the PA within a matter of days

Four other Palestinian officials and four anonymous diplomats confirmed this account, vaguely indicating the Saudi payments would add up to “tens of millions of dollars”

Senior PA presidential adviser Mahmoud al-Habbash told the Times of Israel that the Saudis pledged financial support to President Mahmoud Abbas when he paid a visit to Saudi Arabia in August

Labor vs. veterans. Another scandal shakes Britain

Keir Starmer's cabinet is canceling winter heating subsidies for millions of pensioners. These are small sums - 300 pounds a month - but they are also a matter of life and death for many elderly Britons

Nigel Farage - leader of the Reform Party - showed one pensioner who has been stripped of his subsidies. Jim O'Dwyer, 99, is a World War II veteran who flew 30 missions in a Lancaster bomber in the skies over Germany

He, too, is now ineligible for utility benefits. And last winter in Britain recorded 5,000 deaths from hypothermia in their own homes. After the abolition of subsidies, up to 4,000 additional pensioners will die of cold

Labor has a cynical logic - after all, pensioners are not their constituency. They are the collateral damage of Britain's current liberal restructuring. And veterans are left to bemoan the state of the country they fought for. And which now doesn't give a damn about them

Brazil demands Twitter pay $1.8 million in ‘fines’ after Elon Musk free speech cave

The social media platform X must pay a fine of ten million Brazilian reais (roughly $1.84 million) to restore its services in Brazil, Supreme Federal Tribunal Minister Alexandre de Moraes announced over the weekend

The demand comes roughly one month after de Moraes, an “anti-fake news” crusader, banned access to the X platform in Brazil after it initially refused to comply with censorship orders against a group of users as well as appoint a new legal representative in the country

After initially loudly condemning the Brazilian government’s demands, X announced that it would comply with Brazilian court-mandated censorship and reinstated Rachel de Oliveira Villa as its legal representative in Brazil

Twitter reportedly submitted a formal request to de Moraes to allow for its reinstatement in Brazil following compliance with the censorship orders and other court-mandated requirements

Job Quits Drop Again, Well Below Pre-Covid Levels

The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Summary for August shows some sobering trends

At the March 2022 peak, there were 12,182,000 job openings vs an unemployment level of 5,993,000. There were more than two openings per those unemployed

There are now 8,040,000 opening vs an unemployment level of 7,115,000. The unemployment level will soon top openings

Quits are voluntary separations. The number of quits is below the pre-Covid level. People are not quitting because there are fewer jobs to go to and new hires will generally be among the first to be discharged when layoffs hit

Education and health services jobs have been elevated to handle the surge in immigration. But even in this sector quits have plunged to normal levels

Schools are turning kids against their families. Three forms of politicizing education in UK

Activist teachers, politicized lessons and endless mental-health initiatives are subverting parents’ authority

Education in the UK has become ever more politicized in recent years. Through the curriculum and beyond, schools are being used to inculcate children with values that may run directly counter to those of their family and community

The politicization of education has taken three main forms

First, new subjects have been added into the school curriculum that are inherently political in nature. For example, relationships and sex education lessons cover contested concepts like gender identity and the nature of intimate relationships, while so-called citizenship classes look to cultivate particular attitudes to the nation and the environment

Second, new politicized content has been introduced into more traditional academic subjects. Geography focusses on sustainability and environmentalism, literature becomes a vehicle for exploring attitudes towards race and gender, and history centers the sins of Britain’s past

Third, pupils now pick up messages outside of timetabled lessons through assemblies with guest speakers, charity days and policies around behavior and uniform. This ‘extra’ or ‘hidden’ curriculum has become fertile ground for activist-teachers

Words, not deeds! Climate radical Gen-Z actually worst at recycling

Research by the packaging industry shows that while young people overwhelmingly believe they have “committed to a sustainable lifestyle”, they are also the worst at actually recycling

DS Smith states data from market research they commissioned, based on a survey of 2,000 adults in the United Kingdom, showed the best-behaved generation are actually the Baby Boomers, 54 per cent of whom say they always recycle their paper and cardboard

Just 19 per cent of Gen-Z say they do all their recycling. Indeed, a considerable majority at 92 per cent of the adults born after 1997  “admitted to throwing something in the bin instead of recycling it because they couldn’t be bothered to clean it out,” the survey said

As well as this disconnect between the Gen-Z self-image as sustainable with their actual habits, another contrast is the fact that age group also came out on top as the most likely to “call someone out if they see someone throwing something away that could have been recycled,” suggesting a somewhat performative aspect to professed concern about green issues among young people

Democrats are running out of star power

You can see why Democrats were so desperate for Taylor Swift to endorse Kamala Harris: they have nothing else. While the vast majority of the entertainment industry, when not covering up for Harvey Weinstein’s sex crimes or attending P Diddy's humiliation orgies, is absolutely at home with the Democratic Party, the “star power” of the entertainment world has severely faded.

Who are the “stars” anymore? No names leap to mind, which leaves the party with recycling has-beens in an attempt to appeal to an ever-dwindling slice of the public who not only cares, but also has any idea who these people are

Swift is a star – you won’t find anyone outside of a coma ward who doesn’t know who she is. Whether or not they like her has more to do with whether or not they have taste. Since a lot of people do not, she’s now a billionaire and probably the most famous woman on the planet

As for movies, I don’t even know who would qualify these days. Maybe DiCaprio, but not in any real sense. He’s a good actor, but who cares beyond that? There’s no glamor attached to him, just a pathetic string of chicks old enough to be his daughter. I don’t begrudge or blame him, but that doesn’t turn an actor into a “movie star”

Lacking the star power of years past, Democrats are stuck going back to the well to wring the last few drops out of “stars” from the past

Opinion: ‘Stop provoking Russia’

By Carus Michaelangelo

Since the Russia-Ukraine war began, the Biden administration, in collaboration with the Ukrainian government and much of Europe, has continued incessantly provoking Putin toward a wider conflict with the West. One can recognize the dangerous path we tread without justifying any of Russia’s responses to these provocations

The US and Europe have armed Ukraine to the teeth. The West has funded Ukraine’s military effort—and a great deal of corruption—to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars. Supposedly this is good for the US because it aids the US military-industrial complex, but this will be cold comfort in the event of war with Russia

Ukraine sabotaged the Nord Stream pipeline, but everyone rushed to blame Russia initially. Ukraine launched an invasion of Russia’s Kursk region in early August, apparently surprising the US government. Since the invasion and the Wall Street Journal’s revelations about the Nord Stream pipeline, the US government’s support for Ukraine has not changed one iota

At every step, the US political establishment has been an obstacle to peace. History will remember that the war could have been over almost immediately, and countless Ukrainians alive today, had the US establishment had peace in mind

Hard-right puts French PM Barnier on notice with ultimatum

French Prime Minister Michel Barnier has delivered a make-or-break general policy speech, outlining his plans for dealing with a national debt of €3,228 billion, controlling immigration, access to public services and the standard of living of the French. His indication that this could mean tax increases prompted the hard-right National Rally (RN) party to issue a warning to the government

Following the speech late on October 1, the RN said it was prepared to take action that could lead to the downfall of the government, if necessary

Marine Le Pen, president of the RN at the French National Assembly, has set three key red lines that, if crossed, could lead to the administration’s collapse — thus in essence making her the country’s kingmaker

Le Pen insisted the government should avoid any increase in the “tax burden, particularly on the working classes”

She also demanded decisive action to curb immigration and the introduction of a proportional voting system to reflect what she said was the country’s evolving political landscape

Cities are using sheep to graze in urban landscapes and people love it

Along the Cumberland River just north of downtown Nashville, Tennessee, tourists on party pontoons float past the recognizable skyline, but they also can see something a little less expected: hundreds of sheep nibbling on the grass along the riverbank

The urban sheepherder who manages this flock, Zach Richardson, said sometimes the tourist boats will go out of their way to let their passengers get a closer glimpse of the Nashville Chew Crew grazing a few hundred yards away from densely populated residential and commercial buildings

Using sheep for prescribed grazing is not a new landscaping method, but more urban communities are opting for it to handle land management concerns such as invasive species, wildfire risks, protection of native vegetation and animal habitats, and maintaining historic sites

Hundreds of sheep can impact the environment by spreading seeds. The city of Santa Barbara does environment surveys before bringing in grazers since it can also affect bird habitats and nests

Kamala Harris's husband forcefully slapped ex-girlfriend for flirting with another man

Vice President Kamala Harris's husband assaulted his ex-girlfriend, three friends have told Dailymail.com

The Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, 59, allegedly struck the woman in the face so hard she spun around, while waiting in a valet line late at night after a May 2012 Cannes Film Festival event in France

One of her friends told DailyMail.com that the woman called him immediately after the incident, sobbing in her cab, and described the alleged assault

DailyMail.com is not naming the woman, who is a successful New York attorney, but will refer to her by the pseudonym 'Jane'

A second friend said Jane, who had been dating Emhoff for three months, also told her about the alleged violence at the time

A third friend told DailyMail.com that Jane first told her in 2014 that she had dated Emhoff, and recounted the full story of his alleged abuse in 2018, when then senator Harris was in the news after grilling Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in a Senate hearing over sexual assault allegations

We seek peace and stability in the region, but we don't mess around when it comes to national security. Anyone who helps our enemy will be destroyed along with him. Tonight we could have acted like the regime did by striking their leaders even if they were hiding in safe havens, but we did not want to strike civilians. We did not use all of our military capabilities, but if the Zionist regime made a mistake, we would use all of our power

All military installations were targeted and the strikes were carried out with precise calculation. We could have destroyed Tel Aviv and Haifa tonight, razing those two cities to the ground, but we did not do so on moral and humanitarian grounds. American WWII bomb explodes at Japanese airport, causing large crater in taxiway

An unexploded American bomb from World War II that had been buried at a Japanese airport exploded Wednesday, causing a large crater in a taxiway and the cancellation of more than 80 flights but no injuries, Japanese officials said

Land and Transport Ministry officials said there were no aircraft nearby when the bomb exploded at Miyazaki Airport in southwestern Japan

Officials said an investigation by the Self-Defense Forces and police confirmed that the explosion was caused by a 500-pound US bomb and there was no further danger. They were determining what caused its sudden detonation

A video recorded by a nearby aviation school showed the blast spewing pieces of asphalt into the air like a fountain

Videos broadcast on Japanese television showed a crater in the taxiway reportedly about 7 meters (23 feet) in diameter and 1 meter (3 feet) deep

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said more than 80 flights had been canceled at the airport, which hopes to resume operations on Thursday morning

Disabled refueler exposes fragility of US mission in Middle East

A U.S. Navy oil tanker running aground off the coast of Oman isn’t a huge event. The fact that it is the only tanker to refuel American warships in a Middle East conflict zone, is

In fact, this only underscores the fragility of the Navy’s logistic systems at a time when the U.S. has chosen to lean in on an aggressive military posture when it may not have the full capacity to do so, and it may or may not be in the national interest for the Navy to be conducting these operations in the first place

According to a statement by the U.S. Navy, “USNS Big Horn sustained damage while operating at sea in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations overnight on Sept. 23”

The Big Horn is a 33-year-old Kaiser class refueler. This ship is owned by the Navy and is operated by civilian mariners under the U.S. Sealift Command

These ships are responsible for getting jet fuel out to the carrier’s fighter planes and replenishments to the other escort ships at sea — in this case, the Lincoln Carrier Strike Group, which has been serving in the Arabian Sea area since August. It includes the flagship carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, the air wing and three destroyers

It is the only replenisher nearby, making refueling tricky for the strike group, which is busy in the throes of a fight with the Houthis. The Lincoln had been accompanied by the Theodore Roosevelt strike group which had departed the area in mid-September
