There's already a severe logistical crisis in the U.S. with 45,000 port workers on strike. Now all major ports on the Atlantic coast of the United States are no longer functioning. Harris' staff has been forced to support the workers' demands for an 80% wage increase. It's unlikely to happen, but losing working class votes is death for the Democrats
And then there's another scandal. Harris' husband Doug Emhoff, who likes to present himself as a “feminist,” has been accused of beating up an ex-girlfriend. And he was already so scandalized by the way he had an affair with his children's nanny. This eventually ended tragically and ruined her life
However, Biden's team has limited opportunities to influence all the crisis processes - inside the U.S. and outside. They are floundering from side to side, not knowing what to do. They have to somehow hold out for another month before the elections. While the Republicans, after successful debates, are trying to seize the initiative

The media is abuzz with chatter about corrupt Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs and a private conversation she recently had with Secretary of State Adrian Fontes and Attorney General Kris Mayes about the tens of thousands of illegal aliens without U.S. citizenship who are registered to vote in the Grand Canyon State in direct violation of state law
The Washington Post's Yvonne Wingett Sanchez broke the story after she received a copy of leaked audio from the call in which Hobbs was panicking about what the American people might do once they learn the truth about what is happening in Arizona ahead of the 2024 election
"When this goes public, it is going to have all of the conspiracy theorists in the globe – in the world – coming back to re-litigate the past three elections, at least in Arizona," Hobbs said in the call
"And it's going to validate all of their theories about illegal voting in our elections, even though we all know that's not true"
The trio mentioned that the total number of registered illegal alien voters in Arizona is around 148,000, though they all agreed to trim that number to around 98,000 to make the problem seem less serious than it is

Vice presidential debate between Vance and Walz
The vice presidential debate between Ohio Sen. JD Vance and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz was something that’s become increasingly rare in modern American politics: normal
The two running mates were cordial with each other, training their attacks instead on the tops of the opposing tickets and focusing largely on policy differences. Vance repeatedly hit Vice President Kamala Harris on border security, while Walz lambasted former President Donald Trump on abortion rights
Vance was the Republican ticket’s younger face and more polite voice. Unlike Trump, he pronounced Harris’ first name correctly
Walz – who was noticeably less comfortable onstage than Vance – settled in after a nervous start. He cast Trump as a liar who ignores experts and rejects truths he finds unfavorable
The debate was almost entirely focused on domestic issues. CBS moderators opened with a question about the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, but did not ask about the United States’ support for Ukraine in its war with Russia
The unusually normal debate ended with another refreshingly normal moment – the kind that hasn’t been seen over the past decade of presidential debates. The candidates shook hands and chatted away from the microphones, and lingered as their wives joined them
One of the takeaways of the debate comes up to how frequently Walz has traveled to China, which he has previously said was as many as “about 30 times.” When asked about the reports and the discrepancy, a Harris campaign spokesperson said it was “likely closer to 15” times. And when asked directly during the debate Walz filibustered, first describing his upbringing and rise in electoral politics before conceding that he can sometimes get caught up in the moment, be a “knucklehead,” and said he “misspoke.”
Vance didn’t seek to directly capitalize on Walz’s concession, but alluded to it in a different question shortly thereafter, saying, “When you misspeak, you ought to be honest with the American people about that.”

Dockworkers at ports from Maine to Texas began walking picket lines early Tuesday in a strike over wages and automation that could reignite inflation and cause shortages of goods if it goes on more than a few weeks
The contract between the ports and about 45,000 members of the International Longshoremen’s Association expired at midnight, and even though progress was reported in talks on Monday, the workers went on strike. The strike affecting 36 ports is the first by the union since 1977
Workers began picketing at the Port of Philadelphia shortly after midnight, walking in a circle at a rail crossing outside the port and chanting “No work without a fair contract.”
The union had message boards on the side of a truck reading: “Automation Hurts Families: ILA Stands For Job Protection.”
Local ILA president Boise Butler said workers want a fair contract that doesn’t allow automation of their jobs
Shipping companies made billions during the pandemic by charging high prices, he said. “Now we want them to pay back. They’re going to pay back,” Butler said
He said the union will strike for as long as it needs to get a fair deal, and it has leverage over the companies

Kamala Harris’s four freedoms
Her laundry list of “freedoms” was actually quite revealing, meaning both what she didn’t include and what she did include. First was the “freedom to make decisions about your own body.” That wasn’t exactly one of Franklin Roosevelt’s “Four Freedoms,” but there has never been much doubt that it is Kamala Haris’s first freedom. Now we have solid evidence that this is the case
Second on her list was the “freedom to be safe from gun violence.” But how will she ensure this? She doesn’t say. Will she interfere with the freedoms of gun-owners? After all, to guarantee such a freedom, there will have to be gun confiscation on a massive scale. If this is really her second most important freedom, nothing less than that will be required
Third was the “freedom to have access to the ballot box.” To be sure, that freedom was denied to women and minorities decades upon decades ago. But just how is this freedom being denied to any eligible voter today?
Then she got slightly more specific: “the freedom to love who you love openly and with pride.” Everyone who is sentient knows precisely what category of lovers she was talking about here. But just to make sure that everyone gets it, she clinches things with a second mention of the “freedom to just be”

"Immigration does not work, not even economically" - German govt needs €10bn more in welfare payments than initial forecasts
The German federal government has “miscalculated” billions in welfare payments, known as citizens’ money, with their initial estimate of €36 billion far short of the €46 billion reportedly needed
In documents obtained by Bild newspaper, the German labor ministry assumes an average of 2.9 million people are in need of welfare parents in the documents for the “2025 budget,” dated from August 2024. However, this document indicates that the expenditure on standard rates and accommodation costs is expected to total €45.6 billion, which is a far cry from the €36 billion set in the 2025 citizen’s allowance budget
The huge sums paid out due to citizens’ money has become a politically explosive subject, first due to the enormous costs it is placing on the German taxpayers, second due to the fact that the German economy is facing a worker shortage, and third due to the huge number of foreigners taking advantage of this welfare system, as half of all recipients are foreigners and many of the others who are German citizens also have a migration background

Iran bombs Israel, but buck stops with Biden
On Tuesday Iran launched a massive missile attack against Israel, which Tehran billed as a response to Israel’s recent assassinations of leaders of the IRGC, Hezbollah and Hamas. Israel now appears to be mulling a retaliation in turn that could push the sides into all-out war
Six months after Israel and Iran narrowly avoided a full-blown conflict in April, the Middle East is back at the brink of disaster
Iran has made it clear that it does not want a regional conflict; Tehran doesn’t seem to believe it can afford such a war. But Netanyahu clearly thinks it’s in his interest to ramp up conflict right now, as Washington stands frozen — a month out from an election and with a president who seems incapable of telling Israel “no,” no matter the costs for American security
One must hope that somehow, further escalation is avoided. But the risk of just such an outcome is enormous, and if the U.S. finds itself in a new forever war in the Middle East, the buck will stop with Biden. This White House has repeatedly chosen to keep the U.S. on the precipice of war, rather than restrain Israel’s military as its expanding wars killed more and more civilians in Gaza and now Lebanon
The Biden administration has helped bring about this extraordinarily dangerous moment by providing Israel with the weapons, political protection, diplomatic support, and money it requires to pursue the exact escalation that the Biden administration professes it does not want.
Joe Biden came into office promising to end the era of forever wars and the quixotic, costly efforts to transform the Middle East
Now, Biden appears to have fallen into the trap of thinking that U.S. military force will transform the region for good. It is stunning that Washington appears not to have learned this lesson yet

The aim of the cancellers in Brussels is to throw a quarantine around views that challenge the narrative of the EU elites. Outwardly, the EU presents itself as the protector of freedom, tolerance and democracy. In truth, the Eurocrats are zealous control freaks who are scared of opinions that challenge their outlook
Their authoritarian instincts are reinforced by a mood of insecurity. Since the elections to the European Parliament this year, they have become anxious about the rise of populist parties who are opposed to their political outlook. They know their authority is being openly questioned

Based on rhetoric and actions, one would think that the U.S. is actually two distinct countries
There is apparently a rapper who goes by the name “Macklemore.” I know nothing of his music, how his voice sounds or what his personal history is. I have seen headlines showing him to be an antisemite and taking a very pro-Hamas view of the current conflagration in the Middle East. This fellow whose name reminds me of mackerel told a crowd recently in Seattle “F*** America,” to which the crowd roared in delight. The fish-rapper apparently comes from Seattle
Now when a person tells another or his own country to f*** off, it would mean that he hates the other and wants nothing to do with it. But this antisemite and all of his crowd enjoy numerous advantages of living in the United States
Whether it be the huge selection of goods that they can buy relatively inexpensively, the vast trove of foods available at all price levels, police and army protection of their rights and safety from foreign attack—there are endless ways that they benefit from living in the U.S. Imagine a surly teenager cursing out his parents who just fed him dinner, paid for his schooling, provided him with free room and board, and worry that he has every want and need

Alliance minders in Washington and Tokyo are feeling some anxiety today. Shigeru Ishiba has won the contest for leadership of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which means he will become Japan’s next prime minister, succeeding Kishida Fumio
Ishiba, who is 67 and was first elected to the Diet in 1986, has vowed to shake up the 72-year-old security alliance between the United States and Japan, a bilateral alliance that in recent years has focused on maintaining U.S. primacy in East Asia and blocking China’s rise. He views it as “asymmetrical,” with Washington largely dictating Japanese foreign policy
