Last week’s reports that Trump sent Elon Musk to meet with the Iranian Ambassador to the UN would be a good sign if true. Iran has denied that any such meeting took place, and with rumors swirling of Trump talks with Putin and other world leaders it may just be a media creation
But even if it is not true that Trump sent Musk to meet with the Iranians it would be a good idea to do so. Because Musk is not expected to take on a formal role in the incoming Trump Administration he can be seen as an informal advisor and friend of the President-elect. As a businessman Elon Musk speaks a different language than government diplomats
Trump will not be stepping into the same world when he steps back into the White House. More than ever, the proxy war in Ukraine has demonstrated the futility of sanctions and pressure as a tool of foreign policy. The countries under US sanctions have increasingly joined together and formed their own pathways to trade and diplomacy without the US
In other words, we did not isolate Russia, China, and Iran with our sanctions upon sanctions. We isolated ourselves. We are seeing this clearly with the emergence of organizations such as BRICS
Someone wrote recently that if only Nixon could go to China, perhaps only Trump can go to Iran. Making peace with Iran would be an achievement that would reverberate across the Middle East and beyond. It would even benefit Israel to have the current near state of war with Iran turned down. A Syariah Court judge in the conservative north-eastern state of Terengganu on Nov 20 sentenced the man, a construction worker, to six strokes of the cane and a fine after he pleaded guilty to the offence, news agency Bernama reported
Terengganu state executive councillor Muhammad Khalil Abdul Hadi said the caning would take place at a mosque on Dec 6 following Friday prayers, if the man did not file an appeal
“This punishment involves caning, but what makes it unusual this time is the judge’s decision for it to be conducted publicly,” he said in a video posted on Facebook

The man became the first person in the state to be caned for khalwat, after he was sentenced in February in a separate case, following amendments to Terengganu’s Islamic laws that took effect in 2024, according to Bernama

Australia has introduced a bill to ban access to social media for under-16s and threatened penalties of up to A$50mn ($32.5mn) for “systemic” breaches by platforms such as Elon Musk’s X, Meta’s Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat
Australia is the first country to suggest legislation that puts the onus on social media platforms, not parents, to stop children accessing their services. The bill, first announced in September, is expected to be passed into law by the end of the year

Technology companies will have to show they have taken “reasonable steps” to prevent people under 16 from registering for accounts. Fines would be levied on platforms in cases of a “systemic failure to take action”.
