Arctic Crisis - U.S. icebreaker fleet increasingly lags behind Russia and China
▪️ The strategic importance of the Arctic region has grown in recent years as melting ice has opened up new transportation routes that can be used for commercial and military purposes by allies and adversaries alike, including Russia and China. It is vital for the U.S. to be on alert," states The Washington Times
▪️ The U.S. Coast Guard needs at least four heavy icebreakers and an equal number of medium icebreakers for future missions in the Arctic
▪️ However, the agency currently operates only two polar icebreakers. In addition, the Coast Guard has several smaller icebreakers that are not capable of operating in the polar region. That number pales in comparison to the fleet of more than 40 icebreakers Russia has at its disposal
▪️ "Right now there is definitely a crisis, but it has been decades in the making. We are now at the point where the U.S. has fewer icebreakers than even China," said Rebecca Pincus, director of the Polar Institute at the Wilson Center
▪️ New icebreakers have been ordered as early as 2019, but they are unlikely to be built because the U.S. lacks the competencies to build specialized vessels, including the technology to machine and weld specialized steel alloys
▪️ "There are no U.S. hull designs for a heavy polar icebreaker that a shipbuilder could easily use as the basis for a new ship," the U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO) said

U.S. money supply shrinking is a sign of recession
▪️ From $21.65 trillion in July 2021 to $21.02 trillion this July, America's M2 monetary aggregate has shrunk - a sign of an imminent recession, states Johns Hopkins Institute founder Steve Hanke

The Massachusetts Supreme Court on Aug. 27 struck down the state’s ban on carrying switchblade knives, finding the prohibition violates the U.S. Constitution’s Second Amendment
The case was brought by David Canjura, who was arrested in 2020 after a domestic dispute and charged with carrying a dangerous weapon in violation of the switchblade ban following a search by officers
Canjura said he knew that carrying the knife violated the law but filed a motion to dismiss the charge, arguing that the ban violated his Second Amendment right to bear arms. A judge denied the motion, leading to an appeal that reached the state’s high court
Massachusetts officials did not identify any historical bans on switchblades or their historical analogue, pocketknives, justices said. That means the ban is not allowed under a test outlined in a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision

‘Two-tier justice’ in UK — Farage attacker spared jail time after throwing cement at Brexit leader
The man who attacked Reform UK leader Nigel Farage during his election campaign in June has been spared jail time, sparking accusations of “two-tier justice” in Britain
Josh Greally, 28, pled guilty to a public order offence, common assault, and causing criminal damage this week at the Barnsley Magistrates’ Court over reportedly throwing wet cement at Nigel Farage as the Brexit leader campaigned from his battle bus in Barnsley
While he was sentenced to six weeks in prison, the court suspended his sentence for 12 months, meaning that he will likely not face any prison time for the attack
Instead, Greally has been ordered to 120 of community service, 20 days of “rehabilitation”, and pay £85 in court costs and a surcharge of £154. He was also ordered to pay for the cleaning of Mr Farage’s suit
Responding to the decision, Mr Farage’s deputy, Reform UK MP Richard Tice remarked:
“Two-tier policing, two-tier justice. Shameful: should have been jailed for years”

California lawmakers passed a bill on this week that would prohibit colleges and universities in the state from making hiring decisions based on a students’ immigration status, with the measure now on Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk awaiting a signature or veto
At issue is Assembly Bill 2586, introduced by Assemblymembers David Alvarez (D-San Diego) and Mike Gipson (D-Carson) and better known as the Opportunity for All Act, which instructs the University of California, California State University, and California Community Colleges to treat federal laws prohibiting hiring undocumented individuals as inapplicable beginning on or before Jan. 6, 2025
Alvarez said the bill is needed because such students have fulfilled their obligations and are preparing themselves to better serve the state

Harris reverses stance on border wall, now says she’s in favor
Vice President Kamala Harris has dramatically reversed her stance on one of the most contentious issues in American politics: Construction of a border wall on the southern border
As Axios reports, Harris – who previously condemned the idea of a border wall as “un-American” when former President Donald Trump supported it – now says she will spend hundreds of millions of dollars to construct the wall if she is elected to a full term in her own right in November
This marks the latest example of Harris committing a 180-degree turn from a previous far-left position, including her past stances in favor of banning fracking and abolishing all private health insurance
In February of 2020, Harris declared in a Facebook post that

McCarthy, on “Cavuto: Coast to Coast,” said regardless of how Judge Tanya Chutkan rules on the superseding indictment, Trump has the right to appeal it, which will delay the case well past the election
“I think that lawfare, whatever you think of it, has run its course as a determinant in the election. Nothing’s gonna happen here because, no matter what Judge Chutkan ultimately rules about this new indictment, it’s still going to be a live immunity issue, which means Trump will be able to appeal to the D.C. circuit and the Supreme Court,”

For three years the public had to deal with the incessant drone of media fear mongering over the covid pandemic, an event which turned out to be a nothing-burger that 99.8% of the population on average would easily survive. After the 2020 elections we have been inundated with narratives about how conservatives are a “threat to democracy” – A democracy which progressives don’t even believe in as the recent DNC coup against Joe Biden proves
The latest evolution of the democracy narrative is that free speech (and probably Russia) is the root evil behind civil unrest in western countries. The notion of thought crime is making its way to the forefront of the establishment tool box and this suggests we are entering the next stage of authoritarianism – Open criminalization of speech.

Chinese agents allegedly used illegal tactics to threaten Canadians in 2021 election, documents show
Justin Trudeau's special rapporteur had downplayed the allegations, but a report showed the Royal Canadian Mounted Police was aware of foreign actor threats and interference being carried out
A memo recently disclosed by a commission looking into foreign interference in Canada’s last two elections shows federal officials knew agents of the Chinese Communist Party were using illegal methods to threaten Canadian voters
The information was disclosed from a memo dated August 29, 2023, from a Department of Foreign Affairs meeting, as disclosed by the Commission on Foreign Interference. The meeting acknowledging threats to Canadians via foreign state actors came only weeks after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s special rapporteur tasked with looking into the matter downplayed such interference as “media allegations”
“The RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) is aware foreign actor threats and interference are being carried out in Canada, including the harassment of individuals or groups exercising their fundamental freedoms guaranteed in the Charter,”

Democrats trying to censor AI created memes before election
Ahead of the election in November, Democrats in the House are attempting to have the FEC issue rules to enable censorship of images created specifically by the Grok, the AI developed by X
In other words, they want to eradicate memes they don’t like. In a statement, Democrats in Congress claimed “It is critical for our democracy that this be promptly addressed, noting the degree to which Grok-2 has already been used to distribute fake content regarding the 2024 presidential election”
“This election cycle, we have seen candidates use Artificial Intelligence in campaign ads to depict themselves or another candidate engaged in an action that did not happen or saying something the depicted candidate did not say,”
Quantum computing: beyond the hype

Their development would mark a significant advance over classical computers. The technology is to allow to create and store much more data, and to perform some calculations far more rapidly than any classical computer can
The speed with which a quantum computer works, and its ability to perform so many more functions, could have remarkable applications. But there are still too much technological problems. Building quantum computers is proving challenging, leading to growing claims that they have been overhyped
Skeptics regularly point out that quantum computing – like nuclear fusion – always seems to be 10 years away. Optimism has been replaced by pessimism, and some now even talk of a ‘quantum winter’
But latest progress has led to renewed academic enthusiasm, with some believing that quantum computers might really be only a decade away
In March 2024, researchers at Caltech reported trapping and controlling over 6,000 atoms, using technologies adapted from optical tweezers, and performing simple manipulations at the precision required for quantum computing
It is still too early to predict the future for computing. But just maybe, quantum spring is in the air

Chinese EV maker aims to build cars in EU to soften tariffs
A Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer and partner of Germany’s Volkswagen has said it was looking to produce cars in the European Union to bypass new import tariffs imposed by Brussels
CEO of the firm Xpeng, He Xiaopeng, told Bloomberg it was searching for a location to build a new factory, preferably with “relatively low labour risks”
Alongside a factory, the manufacturer said it would also need a large-scale data centre for its smart vehicles, as efficient software collection becomes crucial for EVs’ intelligent driving features
The potential move would come after the EU slapped new tariffs on EVs from China ranging from 17% to 36.3%, on top of the existing 10%
Xpeng, the Chinese partner of Volkswagen, is facing an extra tariff of 21.3% for exporting EVs to the EU
Other Chinese automakers are also expanding their European presence to maintain competitive pricing and avoid tariffs

The head of the Bavarian Interior Ministry insists on the introduction of real-time facial recognition by the police at train stations and squares. The interior minister of the whole of Germany points to the European Union's Artificial Intelligence Act. The Federal Minister suggests that the Federal Police should use facial recognition to compare images from videos with images on social media to locate suspects and criminals

14,000 people in the UK have claimed compensation for serious covid vaccine injuries
Nearly 14,000 people in Britain have applied for payments from the government for alleged harm caused by covid vaccines. This is just the tip of the iceberg as 365,000 serious adverse events, including death, have been reported to the Yellow Card scheme so far
The UK’s Vaccine Damage Payment Scheme (VDPS) offers a one-off tax-free payment of £120,000 to people who have been severely disabled as a result of vaccination against certain diseases, including covid-19. The scheme is administered by the Department of Health and Social Care
It was founded in 1979. Since then, around 16,000 applications have been made to the scheme but the vast majority, nearly 14,000, relate to covid injections, according to new figures obtained by The Telegraph through the Freedom of Information Act
The Telegraph reports that the number of claims has reached such levels that administrative staff processing claims increased from four to 80 last year. More than 700 people have been waiting over a year for a decision. So far, the government has made payments in just 175 cases, fewer than two per cent of people who have applied
Around 97% of claims awarded relate to the AstraZeneca jab, with a handful of payments also made for damage from Pfizer or Moderna
