It doesn’t matter what Europe thinks — and that’s OK

With the historic US-Russia summit in Alaska fast approaching, European emotion over being left out of the negotiations is reaching fever pitch. Two feelings are clashing in the tender hearts and minds of the soft-spoken Euro-elites. There is anger at the perceived insult to Europe’s (delusional) sense of self-importance as a “great power” on the world stage. And then there’s panic at what Putin and Trump might actually decide about Ukraine, against Europe’s wishes. But the collective psychological Euro-meltdown is unnecessary. They needn’t worry, for a number of reasons.

In the real world the Europeans have never been at the table in any of the big East-West summit negotiations since the Yalta, Potsdam and Paris conferences in 1945-46. Every single big moment involving serious, strategic negotiations with Moscow over issues affecting European security has been an exclusively American-Soviet/Russian affair.

Some will counter that in previous cases there was more room for European input into the US position going into the US-Russia summits, as opposed to today – but is that really true? The fact is that American power has always shaped Europe’s own perspectives, and that US presidents have always pursued certain US interests (see Obama’s diplomatic reset and missile shield redeployments) regardless of what European capitals thought or wanted.

The one major exception to this pattern proves the rule. It was when America didn’t get involved, and let the Europeans broker a deal with Russia by themselves at Minsk in 2015. It’s collapse showed Europe’s incompetence and inability to secure its own interests when America doesn’t hold its hand.

Sharpton: Trump ‘race-baiting’ by targeting black majority cities

MSNBC political commentator Al Sharpton said Tuesday on “Chris Jansing Reports” that President Donald Trump taking federal control of the police department in Washington, D.C. and calling out crime in other majority black cities is “race-baiting.”

Sharpton said, “The data says that crime and violent crime has gone down in Washington, he’s going to send out the National Guard. Well, why didn’t he send it out January 6? So, this is clear politics. It’s aimed at black mayors.”

He continued, “There are many cities in between Washington and Chicago, Washington and Oakland. He only chose the black ones. So, it is clear what he’s trying to do: he’s trying to race-bait. His own base is very concerned about Epstein. So what do you do? You go throw your base red meat. Let’s go back into race, all the blacks are breaking crime, breaking the law, we need to go in. It’s race-baiting. I think that what he has done is disgraceful, and it puts people under siege unnecessarily.”

Sharpton added, “It’s a misuse of law enforcement people. Yes, where there’s crime, we need to support those criminals being subject to the law. The majority of the people in Washington are black, their victims are black. We’re not making excuses for criminals, but he did on January 6. And why should we trust his judgment when the data shows different?”

Birth rate among refugee women in Austria nearly triple that of native-born Austrians

New figures show that women from Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq living in Austria have an average birth rate almost three times higher than that of Austrian-born women, according to data from the country’s Statistical Yearbook on Migration and Integration.

The report finds that Austrian-born women have an average of 1.22 children. Among women not born in Austria, the figure rises to 1.57. However, the figure among some countries of origin rises significantly.

Those born in the former Yugoslavia average 1.94 children, while Turkish-born women have 1.8 children. The highest rates are found among Syrian, Afghan, and Iraqi women, who average 3.3 children each.

The report notes that Austrian mothers tend to be older when giving birth, with an average age of 30.4 years for Austrian-born women compared to 28.7 years for non-Austrian-born women. Women from Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq have their first child at an average age of 26.2 years.

These figures come amid ongoing debate in Austria about the demographic impact of migration since the large influx of refugees from Syria in recent years.

Africa set to test critical-minerals-backed currency

Major countries and regional blocs in Africa are throwing their weight behind an ambitious plan to establish a “non-circulating” currency backed by critical minerals, which are crucial to technological development, defense, and economic growth.

Analysts say a denomination based on commodities could reduce Africa’s reliance on foreign currencies—especially the U.S. dollar—and decrease its dependence on loans from China, Europe, the United States, and global financial institutions like the World Bank.

The proposed monetary unit is provisionally called the African Units of Account (AUA), according to a plan formulated by the African Development Bank and KPMG South Africa.

The proposal says the AUA would be traded on the international foreign exchange market, and would be less susceptible to fluctuations in individual African currencies or the U.S. dollar, making it more attractive to investors.

While some in Africa’s mining industry are optimistic about the potential of such a currency, others warn that China could “weaponize” it, given Beijing’s dominance in global critical minerals supply chains.

Four possible scenarios for ending the military conflict in Ukraine, according to The Times:

1. European option: freeze the war on the current front lines, without changing territories.

2. Ukraine renounces the entire Donbas region (Donetsk + Luhansk), losing key defensive positions.

3. Concessions by Kyiv: Ukraine cedes all of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson, even those territories that Russia does not yet fully control.

4. Exchange of territories: Russia gets all of Donbas, Ukraine returns part of Kherson, but this is unlikely, as the Kherson region is vital for Russia's connection to Crimea.

The snowy remote army base where Trump will host Putin for talks

Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin will meet on Friday at the remote Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, a US military installation in Anchorage, Alaska.

Elmendorf-Richardson combines the Air Force's Elmendorf base and the US Army's Fort Richardson.

It is Alaska's largest military base and is home to more than 32,000 people - about 10% of Anchorage's population.

The area is also significant for Russia: the US purchased Alaska from the Russian Empire 158 years ago.

In fact, Alaska's Little Diomede Island is less than three miles from Russia's Big Diomede Island in the Bering Strait, showing how geographically close the two countries are.

During the Cold War, the base was regarded as "particularly important" in defending the US against the then-Soviet Union, according to the Library of Congress.

Despite this proximity, Putin will be the first Russian president to visit Anchorage.

The US defence department describes the area as having "picturesque, majestic, snow-capped mountains, lakes, rivers, glaciers, and plenty of wildlife".

It also advises visitors attempting to drive to the base to bring emergency kits, food, blankets and extra fuel, as it is so remote.

Canadian steel has no practical foreign markets beyond U.S.

Canadian steelmakers may need to overhaul their operations as steep U.S. tariffs threaten to block access to their largest export market, says Algoma Steel Inc. chief executive Michael Garcia.

“We’ll have little to no business in the U.S. if the 50 per cent tariff continues. Once the full effect of the tariffs plays out, it will effectively lock out Algoma and frankly other Canadian steel producers from the U.S. market,” Garcia says.

Algoma, based in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., is Canada’s only plate steel producer. While it still has contractual obligations in the United States, those will wind down within the year if the tariff remains. According to Garcia, there really are no practical foreign markets for Canadian steel other than the U.S. market.

The company has asked Ottawa for a $500-million enterprise tariff loan facility, not due to immediate liquidity concerns, but to safeguard operations as it adjusts to the loss of U.S. sales and navigates an uncertain Canadian market.

If U.S. access remains blocked, producers will have to pivot to the domestic market, which in recent years has been supplied about two-thirds by foreign steel. Much of that steel is dumped into the Canadian market.

More AfD politicians subject of violent attacks in Germany than all other parties

Representatives of Germany’s main opposition party, the right-wing Alternative for Germany party (AfD), are at a greater risk of being violently attacked than their peers from any other political party.

In the first six months of 2025, the German interior ministry registered 68 attacks on AfD politicians but only 30 on politicians from other parties. The ministry published the numbers in response to a request from Martin Hess, an AfD MP.

Not only were AfD politicians at a greater risk of being violently attacked, the number of attacks has increased by about 40%. Between January and June 2024, the ministry recorded 48 attacks on the right-wingers.

Most have been committed by left-wing extremists, to whom 64 of the 98 attacks this year have be attributed. That meant two-thirds of all attacks and 90% of the violent attacks on AfD members were committed by those from the hard-left.

Japan automakers lose $20m a day from US tariff cut delay

Seven major Japanese automakers lose an estimated $20.3 million in combined profits every day the U.S. delays lowering auto tariffs.

The full-year hit from the duties is projected at $18.3 billion, dragging aggregate operating profit down 36% for six major producers, excluding Nissan, which has not given a forecast.

The U.S. raised tariffs on Japanese vehicles to 27.5% from 2.5% in April but agreed last month to cut the rate to 15%. Goldman Sachs Japan estimates the reduction will lessen the damage by $11 billion, but each month of delay adds roughly $680 million to automakers’ burden.

Mazda, which gets about one-third of its sales from the U.S., expected an 82% drop in net profit to $135 million this fiscal year, assuming the lower rate would start Aug. 1. With tariffs estimated to cost $1.6 billion, it aims to offset the blow with $540 million in cost cuts, but further delays could push it into the red. Subaru, with 70% of its sales in the U.S., forecasts a $1.42 billion hit and a 51% drop in operating profit to $1.35 billion.

In Canada, Nova Scotia just banned hiking, camping to crackdown on wildfires but some people think it’s overkill

Canadians are shocked after Nova Scotia announced $25,000 fines for those caught hiking, camping or fishing in the province’s woods, but the government is defending its decision.

The provincial government announced the new measures, which significantly restrict activities in the woods due to the risk of starting wildfires until Oct. 15 or until the ban is lifted.

Nova Scotia’s trial systems are now “off limits,” with camping, hiking, fishing and even driving through the woods now forbidden. And those who get caught disobeying the ban, could be served with a hefty $25,000 fine.

The province clarifies that people are still allowed to visit local parks and beaches, and will not be fined for taking a short walk to get to these areas.

Parks that have woods will also be restricted, with wooded areas being closed and only non-wooded areas open to the public.

Vance says US 'done funding Ukraine war' - demands Europe step up

Vice President Vance said Sunday he wants peace and to stop funding the Ukraine war, ahead of a Friday meeting in Alaska between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss a ceasefire deal.

“We’re done with the funding of the Ukraine war business. We want to bring about a peaceful settlement to this thing,” Vance told Fox News’s Maria Bartiromo on “Sunday Morning Futures.”

In Alaska, the Trump administration hopes for a breakthrough in peace negotiations with Moscow and a discussion around territorial acquisitions.

Earlier this week, the Kremlin shared a ceasefire deal with the Trump administration, asking for control of eastern Ukraine in exchange for a halt in hostilities.

Trump and Xi among four world leaders expected to attend Asean Summit in October, says Anwar

Four prominent world leaders are expected to attend the 47th Asean Summit scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur this October, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said the meeting will gather high-profile world leaders and would ensure that it yields results of lasting value.

“We look forward to welcoming the heads of government of Asean and dialogue partners, including US President Donald Trump and I believe Chinese President Xi Jinping. In addition, we received positive indications on the attendance from Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who currently hold the Brics and G-20 presidency respectively,” said Anwar in his speech during the 58th Asean Day celebration.

“But securing their presence is only the first step. The greater test is to ensure that they leave Malaysia and Asean feeling their time was well spent.

Anwar said some of the key issues that will be discussed include economic relations through intra-Asean trade and investments.

Philippines’ Marcos says China ‘misinterpreted’ his comments on Taiwan

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr said on Aug 11 that Beijing has “misinterpreted” his comments, saying Manila will be inevitably drawn into a conflict between China and Taiwan should one erupt.

China accused Mr Marcos of “playing with fire” after the Philippine leader said during a visit to India that “there is no way that the Philippines can stay out of it” due to its proximity to the democratically governed island.

“We are, I think, for propaganda purposes, misinterpreted. I’m a little bit perplexed why it would be characterised as such, as playing with fire,” Mr Marcos told a press briefing.

Mr Marcos said Filipinos working and living in Taiwan will have to be evacuated if a conflict does arise but maintained that he wishes to avoid confrontation and war. Over 100,000 Filipinos live and work in Taiwan, according to Philippine government data.

Melania Trump's lawyers warn Hunter Biden: Retract statements or face legal fight

First lady Melania Trump is putting Hunter Biden on $1 billion notice over what she claims are "false, defamatory, disparaging, and inflammatory statements" made about her, demanding he immediately remove and retract the content and issue an apology or face legal action.

Fox News obtained the letter that Alejandro Brito, attorney serving as litigation counsel for the first lady, sent to Hunter Biden and his attorney, Abbe Lowell, Aug. 6.

Brito demanded that Biden "immediately retract the false, defamatory, disparaging and inflammatory statements made about Mrs. Trump," which were contained in a video interview with Channel 5 with Andrew Callaghan and posted to Youtube in early August.

In the video interview, titled "Hunter Biden Returns" video earlier in August, the former first son claimed "Epstein introduced Melania to Trump. The connections are, like, so wide and deep."

Biden also claimed that "Jeffrey Epstein introduced Melania, and that’s how Melania and the first lady and the President met."

A legacy erased: Happy birthday, George Soros
by Parker Thayer

George Soros turned 95 on Wednesday, and for his birthday present America brought him the annihilation of his legacy.

Soros has been known for two things: making money and spending it on political influence. Over the last few years, he has handed over control of his empire to his son, Alex, and Alex seems unable to do either of those things successfully.

First, Alex ruined his reputation for making money. George was once known as “the man who broke the bank of England. Alex became the man who broke the bank of Soros. In 2021, he invested $2 billion to buy shares of an electric vehicle company called Rivian at somewhere between $70 and $100 per share. A year later, Rivan shares were selling for just $18 and Soros Fund Management sold at a loss of what must have been more than $1 billion.

Alex is as talented at making billions vanish as George was at making them appear, but maybe he inherited some of his dad’s skill for political maneuvering and network building?

Well, no, not really.

US national debt hits record $37 trillion

The U.S. national debt surpassed $37 trillion for the first time in the nation's history on Friday as the federal government continues to accumulate debt at a record-setting pace.

New data from the Treasury Department released showed that the gross national debt hit $37,004,817,625,842.56 on Tuesday afternoon.

The $37 trillion debt milestone comes less than eight months after the nation hit the $36 trillion threshold for the first time in late November 2024, and a little over one year after the $35 trillion mark was reached in late July 2024.

The U.S. topping $37 trillion in total debt comes as the total debt held by the public – a metric favored by economists that excludes debt held in intragovernmental accounts like the Social Security trust funds – is projected to reach 99% of the size of the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) this year.

Israel is likely to start a new war with Iran before December — possibly as early as the end of August

Israel may strike Iran again this year to prevent Iran from developing capabilities that could challenge Israel's military superiority, regardless of the uranium enrichment process, according to Foreign Policy. Israel intends to prevent Iran from replenishing its missile arsenal, restoring its air defense systems, or deploying advanced systems as part of its “mowing the lawn” strategy. According to Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, the war in June was only the first phase, adding that Israel is “now entering a new chapter” in the conflict.

"Iran is waiting and preparing for an attack. In the first war, it played the long game, rationing missile strikes in anticipation of a protracted conflict. However, in the next round, Iran is likely to strike decisively from the outset, seeking to dispel any notion that it can be overwhelmed by Israel's military superiority," the publication suggests.

Bravo star Jennifer welch calls for Mexican, Chinese, Indian restaurants to ban white Trump voters

White people who support President Trump should no longer be allowed to eat at Mexican, Chinese, and Indian restaurants in the U.S., according to former Bravo star Jennifer Welch.

"I’ve had it with white people that triple Trumped that have the nerve and the audacity to walk into a Mexican restaurant, a Chinese restaurant, an Indian restaurant, go to a gay hairdresser," Welch shouted on her "I’ve Had It" podcast this week.

"I don’t think you should be able to enjoy anything but Cracker Barrel," she continued.

If you hadn't heard of the phrase "triple Trump," neither have we. Some reports say it refers to Americans who support Trump's stances on immigration, diversity, and LGBTQ rights.

In other words, you are "triple Trumped" if you support secure borders, merit over skin color, and not giving LGBTQ people preferential treatment. Other reports say it refers to those who voted for Trump in 2016, 2020, and 2024.

Either way, damn those triple Trumpers.

Last line of defense: USA intervenes against EU digital surveillance

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has launched a lobbying campaign against the EU’s Digital Services Act. With this step, Americans have become the last line of defense for the free speech rights of EU citizens.

If, in the past, U.S. President Donald Trump often spoke of the European Union as “a tough nut to crack,” he couldn’t have been more accurate. Freedom-loving EU citizens know exactly what he meant. In Brussels, a bizarre mélange of control fetishism, economic dirigisme, and isolation from the outside world has developed—a combination that is no longer tolerable.

Not least, Brussels’s fight against free expression in the digital sphere has revealed the true intentions of the von der Leyen Commission: the recovery of narrative dominance and control over political dissidence—achieved by cold-bloodedly sacrificing citizens’ fundamental freedoms.

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance already issued multiple warnings in the spring about a European censorship empire. In a speech in the U.S. Senate, he denounced European digital legislation as an attack on Western liberties. In his address at the Munich Security Conference, he went so far as to suggest cutting ties with the Europeans if they did not reverse their illiberal, dictatorial trajectory.

‘Stop killing privacy’: EU citizens against age verification checks

A coalition of European citizens is launching a campaign aimed at repealing what they describe as the EU’s “intrusive” and “dangerous” online age verification measures.

Branded under the slogan “Stop Killing Privacy”, the movement is part of a formal European Citizens’ Initiative to challenge controversial online safety legislation enabled through the Digital Services Act.

At the heart of their opposition is the growing use of mandatory identity checks, including uploading official documents or AI-driven biometric scans, to access everyday digital services.

Social media platforms have already implemented selfie-based checks,  government-issued ID checks for users across the UK and the EU.

The people behind the “Stop killing privacy” campaign argued that such requirements violate privacy, create security risks, and pave the way for mass surveillance and censorship.

Mexico’s President says U.S. forces are unwelcome in her country

President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico rejected the use of U.S. military forces in her country on Friday, responding to news that President Trump had directed the Pentagon to target drug cartels that the United States considers terrorist organizations.

“The United States is not going to come to Mexico with the military. We cooperate, we collaborate, but there is not going to be an invasion. That is ruled out, absolutely ruled out,” she said.

It remains unclear what plans the Pentagon is drawing up for possible action, and the order raises a range of legal questions. It is also unclear what notice the Mexican government had: Although Sheinbaum said U.S. officials had told her and her team that the directive “was coming," three people familiar with the matter said Mexican officials had been blindsided.

Depending on what the United States does, Mexico could pull back its cooperation on issues like security and migration.

For months, Mexican officials have in public and in private rejected suggestions of U.S. military action against drug cartels on Mexican territory.

Trump Tempers expectations ahead of Alaska "feel-out meeting" with Putin

During President Donald Trump's wide-raning news conference held at the White House on Monday, he was asked about the much anticipated Alaska summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which is of course stirring much controversy given European fears that he'll do a deal which sidelines Ukraine's interests.

Trump described the talks with Putin as merely a "feel-out meeting" and said that Putin "wants to get involved". He then voiced his belief that Putin wants to get the war "over with".

"I'd like to see a ceasefire, I'd like to see the best deal that could be made for both parties, it takes two to tango," he added, which could be interpreted as a jab toward Ukraine.

Trump at one point in his comments mistakenly said: "We're going to Russia. That's going to be a big deal." But then near the end of the remarks he offered a corrective, saying "I thought it was very respectful that the president of Russia is coming to our country, as opposed to us going to his country, or even a third, third party place."

Such warm words said of Putin will likely make Zelensky nervous, hearkening back to the opening months of Trump taking office, when Trump's relations with Zelensky hit a low-point, and criticisms aimed at Kyiv came weekly. Some analysts have already pointed out that these Monday statements from Trump don't bode well for Ukraine and a favorable settlement on its terms.

Ukraine's position has been to accuse Russia of simply trying to buy time, and that it's not actually interested in negotiating peace. The fact that Trump is even meeting with Putin is being felt as a huge slap in the face in Kyiv.

EU ‘funded Polish swingers club and luxuries for government politicians’ wives

Money from the European Union’s post-pandemic funds was reportedly used to buy luxuries for the families of the Polish Government-supporting politicians and for ventures including a swingers club.

The European Commission on August 8 asked Warsaw for explanations on the alleged misspending of the EU’s funds.

After an announcement in 2024 that funds worth close to €300 million from the National Recovery Plan (KPO) would be released quickly, companies from the hospitality, catering, tourism and culture sector rushed to submit applications.

The luxury items that qualified for funding included vehicles such as a Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q8, Lexus RX450H+ and Range Rover Sport. After the funding process ended, the government proudly announced on its website: “We have already signed 1,621 contracts,” with a map showing where the grants went.

Funds went to entrepreneurs for items such as coffee machines, floating houses, tanning beds and yachts. In one case an entrepreneur from Silesia received €100,000 for the “diversification of catering activities” in a swingers club.

Some €120,000 from the National Recovery Plan funds went to a councillor from Tusk’s Civic Coalition (KO) Izabela Piasecka to build a “relaxation zone” at her privately owned holiday resort.

Another €120,000 went to the wife of KO Senator Beniamin Godyla for a spa area in the couple’s hotel.

The wife of the KO’s wealthiest – according to public records – MP Artur Łącki received three grants from the recovery funds worth over €250,000 to develop his hotel business.

Brazil and India forge strategic alliance amid U.S. tariff onslaught

In a move to counter escalating trade tensions, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have reaffirmed their commitment to a strategic partnership, vowing to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors.

India and Brazil have forged a new strategic roadmap to strengthen bilateral ties over the next decade based on five key pillars, including defence and security, food security, energy transition, digital transformation and industrial partnerships in strategic areas.

The roadmap was finalised during a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brasilia on Tuesday. The two leaders had agreed during their meeting to almost double two-way trade to $20 billion over the next five years.

The two leaders tasked authorities to conclude four bilateral agreements as soon as possible, including an agreement on mutual legal assistance in civil matters and memorandums of understanding on defense industry cooperation, sports cooperation, and archival cooperation, according to a joint statement issued after the meeting.

This development comes in the wake of Washington’s imposition of steep tariffs on goods from both countries.
