American Income vs. Home Prices (1985–2025)
Buying a home in America isn’t for the faint-hearted, with the salary needed to buy a home doubling from 2017 to 2025.
However, while home prices have risen strongly, wage growth hasn’t kept up, widening the home affordability gap. The home price-to-income ratio of America has grown significantly over the last few decades.
In 1985, the median U.S. home cost $82,800, while the median household earned $23,620 annually—a ratio of roughly 3.5x income. That gap has widened over four decades: as of 2025, the median American home costs $416,900, five times the median annual household income of $83,150.
Meanwhile, the 30-year fixed mortgage rates have nearly halved from 12.4% to 6.8% between 1985 and 2025. Theoretically, the lower cost of borrowing would make homes more affordable. However, it can also drive up demand for new housing, potentially resulting in higher prices if supply is limited.

Marine Corps Force Design: A failed operational concept
When the Marine Corps adopted a concept called Force Design as its new warfighting concept in 2019, so called military experts hailed it as a groundbreaking adoption of emerging technology. Unfortunately, most of the praise has come from senior Marine leaders in the form of Press releases from the U.S. Marine Corps Communication Strategy and Operations Office, Marine Corps Combat Development Command, Release 002-2020 and ill-informed journalists.
Tthings have gone sideways for Force Design. The Tomahawk cruise missiles envisioned proved logistically untenable. The shorter range subsonic NEMSIS anti-ship missiles that the Corps has heavily invested in has become obsolete before being fully fielded while also being vulnerable to Chinese countermeasures. The idea behind Force Design was to hide small units on the many islets and shoals in the south China Sea and along China’s first island chain to interdict passing Chinese warships.
The stunning failure of Force Design is the lack of warfighting and logistics capabilities to operationalize the concept.

$750 Billion EU-U.S. energy deal faces reality check
The recently agreed upon U.S.-EU trade deal includes an ambitious commitment for the EU to purchase $750 billion worth of US energy products over three years, including LNG, oil, and nuclear fuel.
Industry analysts widely regard this target as unrealistic, citing that it would require significant redirection of US energy exports, radical shifts in global energy markets, and an improbable increase in EU imports from the US beyond current capacities and market demands.
As part of the U.S.-EU trade deal agreed over the weekend, the EU committed to purchasing a mindblowing $750 billion worth of US energy products over three years ($250 per year) including LNG, oil, and nuclear fuel.
Unless energy prices increase materially, that figure remains beyond realistic expectations. The EU imported roughly €65 billion worth of energy products from the U.S. in 2024, including €20 billion (35 million tons) of U.S. LNG and €44 billion of oil and oil products. To reach the required $250 billion per year, the EU would need to import roughly 67% of its energy needs from the US, based on 2024 Eurostat data.
Even if the EU were to purchase all of its LNG from the U.S., the total would rise to only €40–50 billion, based on 2024 prices. This would require countries like Russia, Algeria, Qatar, Nigeria, and even Norway to completely relinquish their market share in the EU, while the U.S. government would need to mandate its LNG exporters to prioritize Europe.

“Trump's hammer” could break down the barrier between the West and Russia
▪️Europe is in a panic. US President Donald Trump may offer Russia “colossal economic deals” to end the conflict in Ukraine. Such a move could be a “sledgehammer” capable of crushing the economic barrier with Russia erected by the West," states Politico
▪️Representatives of the U.S. oil and gas industry believe that such a move would have significant negative consequences for the U.S. energy industry, as it would undermine the growth of U.S. LNG supplies. However, market players are also preparing for their position to be ignored

Intel to “no longer move forward” with planned new plant in Poland
US tech giant Intel has announced that it will “no longer move forward” with its previously planned new plant in Poland. The company initially suspended the project, as well as planned investments in neighbouring Germany, in September 2024 for two years.
The decision comes after Intel yesterday published its quarterly financial reports, which point to a net loss of $2.9 billion (10.5 billion zloty). The firm also confirmed workforce reduction of 15%.
The plans for an Intel plant in Poland that would assemble and test semiconductor chips were originally announced in 2023. It was to be located near the city of Wrocław, creating 2,000 new jobs, and would become part of an EU-wide semiconductor supply chain being developed by Intel.
“Intel is taking action to optimize its manufacturing footprint and drive greater returns on invested capital,” the company explained in an official statement. “As part of this effort, Intel will no longer move forward with planned projects in Germany and Poland.”

Co-leader of German Green Youth calls for armed struggle against AfD
Armed resistance against a possible right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) government might be needed, according to Jette Nietzard, co-leader of the youth wing of The Greens party in the country.
Her thinly veiled call for violence caused controversy and Nietzard later said she would not stand for re-election.
Nietzard made her original comments during Freitag Salon, a podcast by the public broadcaster RBB. Regarding a possible government with AfD in it she said: “Would it be intellectual, or perhaps with weapons?”
“I don’t want to pigeonhole myself here but I think we as a society should ask ourselves: Are we prepared to hide people again? Are we truly prepared to go somewhere where it matters — to defend a parliament, in the end? … I’m not trying to spread panic. I just want us to ask ourselves: Are we ready?”
The journalist interviewing her, Jakob Augstein, asked if she would go against the will of the voters, to which she replied in the affirmative because, she said, it would be “against fascism”.
Nietzard faced backlash over her comments. As a result, she said she would remain in office as co-chair of the Green Youth wing but would not run again.

Chikungunya fever spreading rapidly in South China; CCP downplays outbreak
Chikungunya fever has spread rapidly in many places in Guangdong Province and spilled over to other parts of China. Local residents say that the government is forcing residents into quarantine and asking them to pay for it, which many people cannot afford.
As of July 24, the total number of officially confirmed cases of Chikungunya fever reported in Foshan City, Guangdong Province, and elsewhere in China reached more than 4,014, according to Chinese state media. The first case was reported on July 8. In the city, 53 hospitals have been designated to treat the disease, with more than 3,600 isolation beds set up and preparations made for expansion to a quarantine facility, according to state media.
Because of the Chinese communist regime’s record of censoring data it considers politically sensitive, as was seen with its underreporting of COVID-19 infections and related deaths in late 2019, the true number of known Chikungunya fever infections could be higher.
Chikungunya fever is a viral disease mainly transmitted to humans by mosquitoes. Its symptoms are similar to dengue fever. Patients usually experience fever, severe joint pain, muscle pain, headache, fatigue, and rash. It has the potential to be fatal.

Kamala Harris’s mentor pours cold water on her gubernatorial plans
Kamala Harris says she will decide by summer’s end if she will run for governor of her native California. She would find it easy to raise money, and polls show that she would likely be the front-runner against a slew of local candidates who want to replace the term-limited Gavin Newsom. But not every Democrat thinks that Harris would have an easy run.
Among them is Willie Brown, the 91-year-old legendary former California State Assembly speaker and San Francisco mayor. He also happens to have been Harris’s political mentor and love interest in the 1990s, when she was just entering the public arena.
“I do think people running for public office really ought to fit eventually where they are trying to land at. And I really do hope, frankly, that Harris comes to that reality,” Brown said. “She may not want to run for governor of the State of California. That may not be where she should be going.” He predicts that she would have a “difficult” road to the governor’s mansion.
Brown is under no illusions that Kamala will heed his warnings. In 2020, he had advised her to not join Joe Biden’s presidential ticket and instead to seek to be U.S. attorney general. He told her that, from that perch, “you may land where you, I suspect, are most talented, and that’s the Supreme Court,” and “you could easily end up being chief justice.” Brown added that “I think she stopped speaking to me as a result of that.”

Trump: Xi Jinping ‘wants me to go to’ China, ‘maybe this year’
U.S. President Donald Trump told Breitbart News exclusively Monday that Chinese president Xi Jinping has been clamoring for a meeting in-person with him soon, and that may happen as soon as sometime this year, either in China or at the White House in the United States.
“Xi wants me to go there and he’s going to come to the United States,” Trump said. “We’re just going to work out dates, but we look forward to it, actually.
After this interview, on Tuesday morning in Scotland before he departed for the United States, Trump sent out a post on Truth Social about a possible Xi meeting. “The Fake News is reporting that I am SEEKING a ‘Summit’ with President Xi of China,” Trump realDonaldTrump/posts/114934232969144109">posted. “This is not correct, I am not SEEKING anything! I may go to China, but it would only be at the invitation of President Xi, which has been extended. Otherwise, no interest! Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
The key here is that it seems Trump is making it clear that it’s Xi and the Chinese who are desperate for any summit, especially as the president gains worldwide momentum for the United States on trade.

Who will pay for US tariffs?
Despite US President Donald Trump’s claim that “Europe will pay,” evidence suggests US businesses and consumers will be footing the bill for the newly agreed 15% US tariff on European Union imports.
“The 15% tariff on imports from the EU will be paid by Americans,” Bryan Riley, trade economist at the American Taxpayer Union told Brussels Signal on July 28.
He added that the tariff would also hurt US exporters, since “Europeans will sell less to the United States, leaving them with fewer dollars to buy our exports”.
The tariff was part of a broader agreement reached in Scotland on July 27 that was intended to avert a higher rate. According to Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič, who was present as the deal was agreed, negotiations began with a proposed 30% tariff, “that would have practically put all trade on hold”.
The agreement has imposed a flat 15% tariff on most European goods entering the US, with some sectors exempt under a “zero-to-zero” tariff scheme.

Beijing keeps up rare earths pressure on Trump
China is restricting the export of critical minerals to the US as it seeks to maintain pressure on the White House ahead of trade talks this week.
Despite Donald Trump striking a deal with Beijing to resume rare earths imports last month, new figures show that China has restored trade at a far slower pace than with Europe and the rest of Asia.
China exported 3,188 tonnes of rare earth magnets worldwide in June, representing a 158pc jump from May. Of that total, 353 tonnes went to the US, an almost sevenfold increase from the previous month’s low of 46 tonnes.
But the average monthly shipment to the US in the first three months of this year was 622 tonnes, suggesting trade is barely back to half the typical level. The June tonnage was also still 52pc below the amount shipped to the US in the same month last year, representing the largest year-on-year decline of any of China’s major magnet customers.
Germany, the largest buyer, received 764 tonnes, up almost threefold from May and down just 25pc year-on-year. Poland, France, Hungary and South Korea also received large boosts to shipments, and had lower year-on-year declines than the US.
“While China’s relationship with the US seems to be warming, Beijing will continue to keep a tight grip on critical mineral exports,” said Leah Fahy of Capital Economics.

US tech firms could leave EU, lawmakers warn
US tech giants will abandon the EU if the Digital Services Act (DSA) is not amended.
Companies like Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta could withdraw from the EU altogether if the law remains unchanged, warned Republican Representative Scott Fitzgerald, a member of the House antitrust committee.
“Absolutely,” he responded, when asked if there was a real risk of US companies exiting.
“There’s seven corporations that are currently listed as gatekeepers by the DSA, and six of the seven are American corporations who are the innovators. They’re the ones that are driving the train on just about everything we do,” said Fitzgerald.
The delegation — which included Republican House Judiciary Committee chair Jim Jordan and Representatives Fitzgerald and another Republican Representative, Kevin Kiley — called the DSA “censorship legislation”, saying it threatens innovation, political expression, and US–EU digital cooperation.
They hoped upcoming EU–US trade negotiations would address the DSA, they said.

EC gives €3M to workers after US tyre factories in Germany close
Workers dismissed following the closure of Goodyear's production site in Fulda and partial shutdown in Hanau, Germany, are set to benefit from EU support. The European Commission will release over €3 million to help 915 workers find another employment, with funds from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund for Displaced Workers (EGF). The EGF will finance measures such as career guidance, reskilling and upskilling, business start-up support, job search assistance, job-scouting and participation in events like job fairs and company visits.
In 2024, the tyre manufacturer Goodyear restructured due to significant decline in demand, rising costs, and growing competition from low-cost Asian imports. The closure of its Fulda plant and partial shutdown in Hanau led to 1,171 job losses, with local unemployment rising by over 10% in Fulda and 6% in Hanau and its surrounding area. Germany applied for EGF support in March 2025.
The measures funded by the EGF will help support workers that often experience skills mismatches in the job market demand following layoffs. The total estimated cost of these measures is €5.1 million, with 60% (€3 million) covered by the EGF and the remaining 40% (€2.1 million) financed by Germany's Federal budget and the Public Employment Service.

China vies to unseat US in fight for $4.8 trillion AI market
At the annual World AI Conference over the weekend, Chinese Premier Li Qiang warned of AI “monopoly” and instead called on foreign officials in the room — mostly from developing countries — to cooperate on governance.
The new group, known as the World AI Cooperation Organization, embodies China’s plan to jostle with the US for sway by positioning itself as a champion of AI for all. More favorable rules may give a global boost to Chinese companies competing with US firms to sell hardware and services in a market estimated to hit $4.8 trillion by 2033.
For many of the countries represented at the conference, Chinese firms already offer competitive solutions, even if the US dominates the supply of cutting-edge AI chips.
“The Chinese are coming to the table with a very different AI product mix that is going to be extremely appealing to lower-income countries that lack the computing and power infrastructure needed for large-scale implementation of OpenAI-like AI systems,” said Eric Olander of the China-Global South Project.
Using technology as both carrot and calling card, Beijing’s approach appears to take a page out of its earlier Digital Silk Road initiative, which put Chinese companies at the center of telecommunications networks spanning continents.

Kamala Harris rules out running for California Governor: My leadership ‘will not be in elected office’
Former Vice President Kamala Harris ruled out a run for California governor in 2026, noting that her leadership and public service would “not be in elected office.”
Harris, who was the Democratic candidate for the 2024 presidential election, issued a statement explaining that she had spent the last six months “reflecting on this moment in our nation’s history” and what the “best way” was for her to “continue fighting for the American people.”
Harris explained that she was “looking forward to getting back out and listening” to American citizens, and helping to get more Democrats elected, adding that she would be “sharing more details” about her “own plans.”
“In recent months, I have given serious thought to asking the people of California for the privilege to serve as their Governor,” Harris said. “I love this state, its people, and its promise. It is my home. But after deep reflection, I’ve decided that I will not run for Governor in this election.”
Harris continued to explain that she has “extraordinary admiration and respect for those who dedicate their lives to public service.”

Lindsey Graham vs. Putin
By Adam Sharp
Throughout the Russo-Ukrainian war, Senator Lindsey Graham has been a primary instigator. His involvement goes back to at least 2016, when he visited Ukraine and told soldiers that “your fight is our fight”, while accusing Russia of “hacking our elections”.
After the war truly kicked off in 2022, Graham told Americans that funding Ukraine was an excellent investment. This was a chance to kill Russians without losing any American soldiers. A win-win. According to Graham, the conflict would destroy Russia’s military, crash the economy, punish their insolence, and likely even lead to Putin’s downfall.
In 1941, Adolf Hitler had a similar assessment of Russia, saying, “We only have to kick in the door and the whole rotten structure will come crashing down.” Needless to say, Germany’s decision to invade Russia marked the turning point in WW2. Things did not go well for the Fuhrer from that point on.
Already it is becoming clear that Graham’s assessment of Russia was on par with Germany’s circa 1941. The arrogance of Lindsey Graham and other warmongers has led to the death of more than a million people.
And far from weakening Russia’s military, it has acted as a catalyst for Putin to unite the country while modernizing and updating the country’s offensive capabilities. This conflict has not weakened the Russian military, or economy, as the hawks hoped. Russia now has the most experienced modern military in the world. The only one that has fought a large-scale war against a near-peer opponent (and survived largely intact). Due to the war with Ukraine, Russia has strengthened its alliances with North Korea, Iran, and China.
Russia is a bad enemy to have. This has been proven throughout history. It’s time to end this war and restore diplomacy.

Trump pushes for release of Epstein, Maxwell grand jury testimony
Donald Trump's administration, seeking to ease an uproar plaguing his presidency, urged two judges to release testimony to a grand jury that indicted Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell on sex trafficking charges.
In late-night court filings on Tuesday, U.S. federal prosecutors said unsealing the materials would be appropriate given the "abundant public interest" in the case of Epstein, the late financier, and Maxwell, an imprisoned British socialite.
Trump has faced pressure to make public documents from the federal investigations into Epstein, who died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, and his longtime girlfriend Maxwell, who was convicted of sex trafficking in 2021.
Even if one or both of the judges allow the transcripts to be made public, it is unclear whether the public would learn anything new or noteworthy.
House Oversight Chair James Comer subpoenaed Maxwell to testify next month. In a new letter sent to Comer Tuesday, Maxwell’s attorneys said they initially decided to invoke her Fifth Amendment rights, but then offered to cooperate with Congress “if a fair and safe path forward can be established,” including immunity.

Why Japan’s Ishiba refuses to quit even amid intense pressure for him to go
Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba faces intense pressure within the Liberal Democratic Party to take responsibility for three election defeats by resigning. But he remains at bat following his third strike as the head of the LDP — the party’s July 20 Upper House election loss.
The LDP was dealt a huge blow in the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly election in June, during which it lost nine seats and was relegated to becoming the second-largest party in the assembly. In a meeting with party executives and angry LDP lawmakers on Monday, Ishiba resisted calls for him to resign, saying he would stay on as party president and prime minister in order to prevent a political vacuum from forming.
Recent media polls suggest that the public is not as anxious as many in the LDP to see Ishiba resign over the electoral losses, which past party presidents have often done.
Ishiba says that his insistence on remaining, at least for now, is also due to specific policy issues. On Tuesday, he told reporters that he wanted to make sure the 15% tariff deal with the U.S. is implemented. He said it was vital to examine the impact of the agreement on the roughly 4,300 domestic items covered by it.
Another reason Ishiba isn’t bowing to pressure to resign is a busy August schedule. Once August ends, any push for a leadership change becomes tricky as the political world prepares for the opening of the autumn session of parliament. The timeline is sure to be on the minds of LDP members seeking to oust Ishiba as quickly as possible.
Many want to see Ishiba strike out, but replacing him may not guarantee a more stable LDP or a more stable political situation.

Graham: Israel should ‘do in Gaza what we did in Tokyo and Berlin’ // Sanders: The U.S. should block arms to Israel
Sen. Lindsey Graham said Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press that Israel would soon take up military operations against Gaza comparable to U.S. military operations against the Axis powers during the Second World War.
“I think Israel’s come to conclude that they can’t achieve a goal of ending the war with Hamas that would be satisfactory to the safety of Israel and that they’re going to do in Gaza what we did in Tokyo and Berlin. Take the place by force and start over again,” Graham said.
At the same time Senator Bernie Sanders intends to force a vote in the Senate on July 30th on resolutions to block arms sales to Israel.
As hunger mounts in the Gaza Strip because of Israel’s war and repeated blocks of aid to it, Sanders introduced a joint resolution providing for congressional disapproval of exporting some weapons assistance to Israel.
"At a time when Israeli soldiers are shooting civilians trying to get food aid on a near-daily basis, the United States should not be providing more weapons to Israeli security forces," Sanders' office said.

Polish far-right leader indicted on seven criminal counts
Polish prosecutors have filed an indictment against far-right MEP Grzegorz Braun over four incidents, including extinguishing Hanukkah candles in Poland’s parliament, disrupting a Holocaust lecture, and removing a Christmas tree from a courthouse.
The indictment follows the European Parliament’s decision in May to lift Braun’s immunity in connection with seven criminal offences, after which he was charged by Polish prosecutors.
Braun, who finished fourth in last month’s presidential election with 6.3% of the vote, was last year stripped of immunity by Poland’s own parliament and charged by prosecutors. But he was subsequently elected to the European Parliament, granting him immunity once again.
The most infamous incident occurred in December 2023, when Braun used a fire extinguisher to put out Hanukkah candles during a ceremony in parliament attended by Polish-Jewish leaders.
He has now been indicted in relation to that incident with insulting a religious group, malicious interference with a religious act and offending religious feelings, as well as assaulting and causing harm to the health of a woman who had been involved in the ceremony.

Cambodia-Thailand peace efforts hailed by Asean founding members amid ceasefire at border
Despite the dangerous and escalating situation at the Thai-Cambodian border, it was “both vital and possible” to bring the two countries to the negotiating table, said Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
The July 28 peace talks between Cambodia and Thailand, which took place in Putrajaya with the help of Malaysia, reflect not only the strength of Asean’s convening power, but also the constructive engagement of its partners in safeguarding regional stability, said Anwar, speaking at the Asean Secretariat in Jakarta while on an official visit to Indonesia.

San Francisco restricts RV parking in effort to combat homelessness
San Francisco has approved a new two-hour parking limit on all oversized vehicles in an attempt to prevent homeless people from living in RVs and to reclaim public spaces across the city.
The policy was passed by city supervisors in a 9–2 vote on July 22.
“No child should grow up in San Francisco forced to live in a car, and no parent should have to raise their child in those conditions,” San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie said in his introduction of the plan in June.
“This legislation combines compassion with accountability, offering a clear path to housing while restoring safety, cleanliness, and accessibility to our streets and public spaces.”
This policy is part of Lurie’s Breaking the Cycle plan, an initiative that aims to transform San Francisco’s response to homelessness and addiction.
According to the ordinance, in May the Healthy Streets Operation Center identified approximately 500 large vehicles parked in San Francisco’s public streets, of which more than 430 were occupied.

Attacking critical nodes? US fighter jet factories at risk of labor strike by democrat-aligned union
Boeing Co.’s defense division is catching flak from its workers. The International Machinist and Aerospace Workers union announced Sunday, July 27, that 3,200 workers at three Boeing factories in Missouri and Illinois had collectively rejected the company’s latest contract offer.
Under existing terms of employment, the represented workers now enter a weeklong “cooling-off period” before a strike can begin, but Dan Gillan, a senior Boeing executive, said the company is “preparing for a strike” in a statement.
The looming labor action is the latest to threaten Boeing since late 2024, when the IAM called a strike of its Puget Sound-area commercial jet factories that wound up lasting nearly three months.
A statement from the IAM, which had endorsed the tentative agreement, said the new contract “fell short” of union members’ priorities without naming specifics.
The tentative deal offered workers a 20% wage increase over the 4-year course of the contract — notably less than the 38% increase over 4 years won by the Puget Sound workers in 2024.
