▪️ The development of AI is not a typical investment boom. Even the largest technology companies are unable to develop using their own funds. They attract investment “at any cost,” regardless of the cost of borrowed funds.
▪️ The current situation is very reminiscent of the dot-com boom in the late 1990s, when there were high hopes for explosive growth in automation and labor productivity. This did not happen, as it may not happen now, and the result will be a sharp increase in the cost of investment and electricity

The Democratic Party faces a voter registration crisis
The Democratic Party is hemorrhaging voters long before they even go to the polls.
Of the 30 states that track voter registration by political party, Democrats lost ground to Republicans in every single one between the 2020 and 2024 elections — and often by a lot.
That four-year swing toward the Republicans adds up to 4.5 million voters, a deep political hole that could take years for Democrats to climb out from.
The stampede away from the Democratic Party is occurring in battleground states, the bluest states and the reddest states, too, according to a new analysis of voter registration data by The New York Times.
Few measurements reflect the luster of a political party’s brand more clearly than the choice by voters to identify with it — whether they register on a clipboard in a supermarket parking lot, at the Department of Motor Vehicles or in the comfort of their own home.
And fewer and fewer Americans are choosing to be Democrats. For the first time since 2018, more new voters nationwide chose to be Republicans than Democrats last year.

Chinese tech giants keep buying Nvidia's H20 chips despite Beijing's warnings
Chinese demand for Nvidia’s H20 chips remains strong despite Beijing’s warnings over "security" risks. The U.S. chipmaker, which agreed to hand 15% of China sales revenue to Washington in exchange for export approval, is now eyeing a rebound in the world’s second-largest economy.
Beijing recently summoned Alibaba, ByteDance, Tencent, and Baidu, urging them to rely more on domestic suppliers like Huawei, Biren, and Cambricon. State media later echoed government concerns, alleging H20 chips carry backdoor risks — a claim Nvidia denies.
Executives at major Chinese firms, however, say the guidance is only "advice," not a ban. One said their projects are not "critical infrastructure" and will continue to use Nvidia chips. Another noted that while Huawei’s Ascend is praised as "superior," it suffers from efficiency problems, higher-than-expected defects, and capacity constraints.
Price also works in Nvidia’s favor. H20 is actually cheaper to use than some Chinese alternatives, both in purchase cost and energy efficiency.

French streamer dies live online after months of apparent mistreatment
French authorities are investigating the death of a man during a live video stream on the Kick platform, where he had regularly been shown enduring violence and humiliation.
Prosecutors ordered an autopsy and opened an investigation into the death of the man, 46, in the village of Contes, north of Nice, on Monday.
France’s junior minister for AI and digital technology, Clara Chappaz, said Raphael Graven, known online as Jean Pormanove, had featured regularly in videos on Kick, where he was physically assaulted or humiliated by co-streamers as viewers watched live.
“The death of Jean Pormanove and the violence he suffered are absolutely horrific,” Chappaz wrote on X.
Kick Français said it would cooperate with authorities and was undertaking a review of its French content.

Federal agency announces $500 reward for people who snitch on criminals
Authorities in Washington, D.C., are offering a $500 reward for those who provide tips leading to arrests, Attorney General Pam Bondi said on Wednesday.
"We have now made over 550 arrests in Washington, DC and have taken 76 illegal firearms off the streets—saving lives. You can help— US Marshals Service is offering a reward for any information leading to an arrest. Together, we will make DC safe again!" Bondi wrote on X.
The news comes after Donald Trump deployed the National Guard to Washington, D.C. earlier this month and wielded his presidential authority to bring Washington, D. C. police under federal oversight in a bid to "take our capital back".

According to the president, his administration won’t allow the current trajectory to continue, and attorneys will go through the museums to “start the exact same process that has been done with Colleges and Universities,” where he said there has been substantial progress.

European leaders ‘asked Trump to pressure Orbán’ on EU membership for Ukraine
US President Donald Trump reportedly called Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán at the behest of European leaders in a bid to convince him to support Ukraine joining the European Union.
According to people familiar with the matter, Trump spoke with Orbán on the phone on August 18 after discussions with European leaders on the Hungary PM’s stance against Ukrainian accession talks with the EU.
Hungary has strongly opposed this and has been the most critical towards Ukraine gaining EU membership.
The main reasons for this reportedly are ongoing problems experienced by the Hungarian minority in Ukraine and the high potential costs of Ukraine’s EU membership. In addition, Orbán apparently felt Kyiv would find it difficult to meet the necessary requirements to join, the so-called acquis communautaire.

In U.K., Nigel Farage’s Reform Party wants to shut down migrant hotels nationwide after court ruling
Municipal governments across the United Kingdom are stepping up legal efforts to block local hotels from being used to house asylum seekers en masse, as public unrest grows over the danger and disruption migrants are causing in communities.
In Essex, Epping Forest District Council recently secured a High Court injunction to prevent migrants from being placed at The Bell Hotel, citing community protests and safety concerns. The protests in Epping erupted in the area after an asylum seeker living at the hotel was arrested for sexually abusing a local girl. The ruling came despite attempts by Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour Party, to keep the migrants at the hotel.
The landmark ruling is now being closely examined by other councils. Richard Tice MP, deputy leader of Nigel Farage’s Reform Party, has said “Reform councils will be progressing these legal avenues on an urgent basis.”
Farage called the Epping legal case a victory for the “good people of Epping” who have been protesting, saying they “must inspire similar protests around Britain”—despite the efforts of establishment politicians and media outlets to portray them as “far right.”

Newsom’s proposed gerrymander of California will eliminate at least four of nine Republican-held districts in the deep blue state. Currently, Republicans only hold nine of California’s 52 congressional seats (17%). Under the new map that the governor wants to present voters in a special election in November, Republicans will hold five seats (just under 10%).

‘Coalition of the Unwilling’: Unable to will any action without participation of US
The pictures from The White House meetings on August 18 between President Donald Trump and eight European leaders will almost assuredly feature in the history books. Especially extraordinary was that all of Trump’s guests left the meeting happy.
Just months ago, this would have seemed impossible. What changed?
As some in Brussels might have it, it was the firmness of the “Coalition of the Willing,” the troubling term (anyone remember Iraq?) that the aforementioned leaders have come up with for themselves, that convinced Trump to join in and consider America providing Ukraine with some sort of security guarantee.
In fact, Monday’s events revealed a starkly opposite truth: There is no Coalition of the Willing. Instead, it’s a Coalition of the Unwilling – and the meeting on the 18th left them unmoved. The “Coalition of the Willing” is simply unable to will themselves to any action without the participation of the United States.
Europe prefers to be led by the United States. They will claim the partnership is equal, of course. But one of the pictures taken from the Oval Office meeting, and excitedly released by the White House, tells the true story: all eight European leaders sitting across from President Trump, who is positioned at their centre, akin to a headmaster speaking with lower-ranked teachers. Or even, perhaps, with his students.

German neo-Nazi changes gender to serve sentence in women’s prison
Sven Liebich, a known neo-Nazi activist from Saxony-Anhalt, legally changed his gender last year and now can serve his jail sentence at a women’s prison.
In July 2023, Liebich was sentenced to a a year and six months jail without parole by the Halle District Court for incitement to hatred, defamation and insult, among other things.
While he lost his legal appeals, Liebich went on to change his gender, based on the self-determination act in relation to gender entry (SBGG), issued by the previous progressive German government and which came into force on November 1, 2024.
This act, in line with those of many other western countries, allows people to simply register a gender change at the civil registry office and update their ID.
Liebich’s gender-change was accepted by the government and became official. He became a she, under the name Marla-Svenja Liebich and grew a large moustache.
Liebich has said “she” would report anyone who “misgenders” her. In Germany, “misgendering” can be punished with fines of up to €10,000.

UK drops Apple encryption demands
The UK government has dropped its demands to create a backdoor into Apple's encryption, according to the US intelligence chief Tulsi Gabbard.
Gabbard said the UK had withdrawn its demand to access global Apple users' data if required. "The UK has agreed to drop its mandate for Apple to provide a 'back door' that would have enabled access to the protected encrypted data of American citizens and encroached on our civil liberties."
According to Gabbard, it was the result of months of working closely with partners in the UK, US President Donald Trump and vice president JD Vance.
In February, there were reports the government had ordered Apple to create a way for UK security services to access its encrypted user data. Such orders, called Technical Capability Notices (TCN), are not public and legally, neither of the parties can publicly confirm their existence.
Apple soon withdrew its "advanced data protection" feature for UK users, which offered end-to-end encryption for cloud data storage, meaning only the account holder could see any stored data.

MSNBC will soon become My Source News Opinion World (MS NOW), signaling a significant rebranding effort as the network separates from NBCUniversal and becomes part of the new cable entity Versant.
The name change reflects the leftist network’s attempt to distance itself from its toxic reputation as “MSDNC,” in reference to its partisan reporting effectively on behalf of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and Democrats more broadly.

Rogue leftist group creates target list of Trump-linked billionaires for its foot soldiers
The Department of Class Solidarity, an emerging left-wing activist group, launched a project to "audit" and track over 1,000 billionaires across the U.S. Their stated goal is not financial transparency, but political warfare: to document billionaire ties to President Trump, and then equip activists with the tools to, in their words, "defeat them."
The group recently published its first five audits, each featuring a high-profile billionaire with direct or indirect links to the Trump agenda. The names include some of the wealthiest and most influential figures in American business: Elon Musk, Palantir CEO Alex Karp, former Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) official Antonio Gracias, Silicon Valley "supervillain" Peter Thiel, and Amazon's Jeff Bezos.
Each billionaire's profile is accompanied by a stylized "wanted poster," underscoring the group's framing of billionaires as political enemies.
The campaign is already building toward action. Organizers are promoting a "People vs. Billionaires Week of Action" scheduled for 21–27 August, leading into a Labor Day National Day of Action on Monday, 01 September.
The group is clearly attempting to establish a long-term campaign that will target wealthy elites, tie them to the Trump agenda, and generate social pressure against their businesses and political activities.

Germany’s Die Linke youth wing caught in anti-Semitism row
Linksjugend Frankfurt, the local chapter of the youth division of Germany’s hard left Die Linke, has been vilified after tweeting on X that Jewish teenagers expelled from a flight should have been thrown-out mid air.
The group was accused of anti-Semitism over the controversial tweet and they expelled the member whom they said was responsible for the tweet.
Die Linke’s youth organisation in Frankfurt had responded to an article by the outlet Jüdische Allgemeine of 52 Jewish youngsters, not older than 15 years, who had been expelled from an aeroplane in Valencia by the Spanish company Vueling amid accusations of disturbing the departure procedure and interrupting the security briefing of the cabin crew.
“Unfortunately, we have to disappoint: The throw-out did not take place while the plane was in the air,” the official account tweeted.
China wants to address overcapacity in critical sectors
China says it wanted to confront the problem of its factories producing far more than the domestic market can absorb.
Foreign governments have long warned about the issue, which pushes excess goods abroad and undercuts competitors.
China’s industry ministry said on August 19 it had met solar companies for the second time in two months, urging them to strengthen regulations, curb overcapacity and reduce what it called disorderly low-price competition.
Beijing told firms to prepare for ending outdated production capacity after heavy job losses and mounting financial losses in the sector.
“Thirty per cent of Chinese corporates in ‘green’ tech are ‘zombies’,” Alicia García Herrero, senior researcher at the Brussels-based Bruegel institute, told Brussels Signal on August 20.

Court upholds nearly $1 million fine against restaurant that ignored pandemic indoor dining ban
A Washington state restaurant that ignored a 2020 state COVID-19 pandemic order must pay a fine of $936,000 - $18,000 per day, for each day it remained in operation while the state's emergency order banning indoor dining was in place, an appeals court has ruled.
The ban, imposed in late 2020 by Washington Gov. Jay Inslee (D), went into effect following a jump in cases and hospitalizations. In response, the owners of Stuffy's II restaurant, Bud and Glenda Duling, ignored the order - resulting in the financial punishment.
The fine was levied by the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries - which the Dulings say they cannot pay. Meanwhile, the Board of Industrial Insurance Appeals did not have their back, refusing to weigh in after saying they don't have the authority to deal with constitutional matters. A superior court judge upheld the decision.
Despite providing tax returns showing that it operated at a loss in 2020 and received a PPP loan, the court ruled that the Dulings have not provided evidence that their company cannot pay the fines.

Donald Trump administration slapped a Canadian judge on the International Criminal Court (ICC) with sanctions as the U.S. State Department unleashes a new wave of restrictions against judges it said had been instrumental in a past decision to investigate U.S. officials and in efforts to prosecute Israeli leaders.

Alleged Nord Stream pipeline saboteur arrested in Italy
Italian police have arrested a main suspect in the attacks on the Nord Stream pipelines in September 2022.
The arrested man, a Ukrainian identified as “Serhii K”, is suspected of allegedly coordinating the planting of several explosives on the Nord Stream gas pipelines, leading to their destruction and additional environmental damage.
Nord Stream is a network of pipelines that runs under the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany to provide western Europe with natural gas. Germany, which suffered serious economic damage because of the sabotage of the pipelines, has been investigating the explosions since 2022.
Serhii K reportedly was arrested by the Italian police in the province of Rimini on the basis of a European arrest warrant.
Initially, many in the media pointed to Russia as the possible culprit but this made little sense to observers, as Moscow could simply switch off gas flows into Europe. Several intelligence services in Europe have strong suspicions that the pipeline attack was orchestrated from Ukraine. The attack damaged the Russian economy and forced the rest of Europe to move away from Russian energy.

Gabbard revokes security clearances for 37 intel officials who allegedly abused public trust
Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard announced Tuesday that she will be revoking security clearances for 37 current and former intel officials for allegedly abusing the public’s trust by manipulating information and conducting political activities.
The officials on Gabbard’s list includes former top aides to Obama Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, who was involved with a discredited intelligence assessment that claimed Russia favored once-and-current President Donald Trump to win the 2016 election over Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.
Gabbard has accused the 37 officials accused of politicizing and weaponizing intelligence, failing to safeguard classified information, or other instances of failing to follow standards.
“Being entrusted with a security clearance is a privilege, not a right. Those in the Intelligence Community who betray their oath to the Constitution and put their own interests ahead of the interests of the American people have broken the sacred trust they promised to uphold,” Gabbard said in a statement.
