While federalizing the local police and deploying the National Guard in Washington, D.C., President Donald Trump has suggested he could flex his authority to fight violent crime elsewhere.
“We have other cities also that are bad, very bad,” the president said during an Aug. 11 press conference.
He listed Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles, Oakland, and Baltimore among the cities of concern.
Although homicide and other violent crimes have recently dipped across America, the numbers from big cities are still high—in some cases, higher than they were before surges one to two decades ago.
Trump’s power to deploy the National Guard outside the nation’s capital is also under debate. A federal judge is deciding whether his deployment of troops to Los Angeles was lawful.

In New York politics, there's one machine that towers above the rest. No, not the Democratic Party—it's the Working Families Party, the most powerful minor party in America. Its name sounds wholesome enough—who doesn't support "working families"? But behind that branding lies a $2 billion tax-exempt laundromat that's anything but local, grassroots, or honest.
Take Zohran Mamdani, their current belle of the ball, the product of a grassroots washing syndicate of 501c3 and 501c4 entities funded by George Soros and Silicon Valley billionaires. He is their manufactured product.
After winning his race, Mamdani announced on NBC: "I don't think we should have billionaires." This is the theater of modern politics: denounce wealth while being powered by it. And the actors know their audience. They've learned that if you slap "grassroots" on the packaging, voters won't check the label. But let's check it anyway.
Soros donates to the Open Society Institute, a $4.5 billion "charity" that enjoys generous tax deductions. OSI then transfers millions to other "charities" like Tides Foundation, which mysteriously claims to run a $350 million operation with zero employees. From there, the money "converts" into political cash: Tides passes funds to the Working Families Organization, a 501(c)(4), which then wires millions to PACs that bankroll candidates like Mamdani.
What you have is billionaire money dressed up in "working families" clothing, masquerading as the will of the people while being anything but.

Why Trump gets it right on Ukraine peace
In Alaska he found reality: he is now embracing an agreement without demanding a ceasefire first, which would have never worked anyway.
Most of the Western commentary on the Alaska summit is criticizing President Trump for precisely the wrong reason. The accusation is that by abandoning his call for an unconditional ceasefire as the first step in peace talks, Trump has surrendered a key position and “aligned himself with Putin.”
This is nonsense. What Trump has done is to align himself with reality, and the real charge against him is that he should probably have done this from the start, and saved six months of fruitless negotiations and thousands of Ukrainian and Russian lives. Moreover, by continually emphasising a prior ceasefire as his key goal, Trump set himself up for precisely the kind of criticism that he is now receiving.
He is now entirely correct in saying that he wants “to go directly to a Peace Agreement, which would end the war, and not a mere Ceasefire, which often times do not hold up.”

Illegal migrants in Britain: Starmer doesn’t stop the boats
It is safe to say that Keir Starmer’s ‘smash the gangs’ strategy for tackling the small-boats crisis is not going according to plan.
Since Labour came to office, the number of migrants who have crossed the English Channel on small boats has surpassed 50,000. No British government has overseen as many illegal Channel crossings in such a short period of time.
Yet instead of securing the border, successive British governments have rolled out a red carpet from Dover to Calais. Illegal immigrants get free accommodation (sometimes at four-star hotels), free healthcare and a relatively assured passage to permanent residency in a prosperous, democratic country. We have created El Dorado for illegal migrants.
Nor has Starmer done anything to remove the various legal impediments that, for years, have stripped the UK of sovereignty over its borders. Even convicted criminals are routinely granted the right to remain in Britain indefinitely.
Sadly, we are in danger of wasting our breath here. After all, Starmer is arguably the biggest problem of all. He is as enamoured of international courts as he is contemptuous of the nation state. As a technocrat, all of his instincts align with the outlook and laws that have allowed this problem to spiral out of control. We could be in for a long four years.

German investor morale falls amid continuing US trade tensions
According to surveys, German investor morale fell sharply in August, a drop that exceeded expectations and underscored how tensions over US–European Union trade have been shaping Europe’s economic mood.
The decline came less than a month after the European Commission reached a tariff agreement with Washington that set duties of 15 per cent on most EU goods entering the US. It left 50 per cent tariffs in place for steel and aluminium and negotiations on those sectors have remained unresolved.
For economies such as Germany, Belgium, France and the Netherlands — where export industries account for a large share of growth — the deal has had a sharp impact on chemicals and pharmaceuticals, two of Europe’s most globally competitive sectors.

The biggest threats to teens’ mental health
Concerns over teen mental health are growing, but how teens and parents view the root causes can differ significantly.
Social media is the #1 concern for both groups, though the degree of concern differs.
While 44% of parents name social media as the top threat, just 22% of teens do the same. In fact, a majority of teens see social media as a positive space for friendships and creativity: 74% of teens say these platforms make them feel more connected to their friends, and 63% say they give them a place to show off their creative side.
Teens are more likely to mention bullying (17%) and pressure or expectations (16%) than their parents, who rank these lower at 9% and 8%, respectively. These stressors often originate in school environments and peer interactions, which parents may not fully perceive.
A small share of parents (5%) cite societal issues—like politics or culture—as threats. Meanwhile, teens are more likely to pinpoint school (5%) as a direct source of mental strain.

Arkansas can finally enforce ban on transgender mutilation of children
A federal court has cleared Arkansas to finally begin enforcing its ban on “gender transition” procedures for minors, four years after it became law.
Enacted in 2021 when the legislature overrode a veto from former Gov. Asa Hutchinson, a liberal Republican, the Save Adolescents From Experimentation (SAFE) Act makes it illegal for doctors to prescribe puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, or transgender surgeries for people under the age of 18, as well as to make referrals for such procedures. It was the first state law of its kind but quickly became tied up in legal challenges.
On Tuesday, however, the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals voted 8-2 to overturn a lower-court ruling against the law, finding that banning procedures for minors did not violate gender-confused Americans’ equal-protection rights, as it “classifies based on age and medical procedure, not sex.” The ruling cited a June ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court upholding a similar law from Tennessee.

Former EP candidate fined for heckling von der Leyen at rally in Finland
Helsinki District Court fined former European Parliament election candidate Armando Mema for heckling European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during her visit to Finland.
Mema was fined €110 on August 11 for “causing harm to a public official”.
“The court sentenced me guilty of a crime I did not commit,” said Mema.
The incident took place in June 2024 during the EP election campaign.
At the time, von der Leyen was in Finland at the invitation of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, delivering a speech about the importance of free speech in Europe.
She even quipped that “in Russia, people would be arrested if they spoke their mind”. At the speech, Finnish police arrested Mema for shouting questions at her.
On social media video of the arrest mid-way through von der Leyen’s free speech narrative drew both laughter and disbelief online.

Efforts to weaken AfD fail as it is now Germany’s most popular party
Alternative for Germany has taken the lead in national polling as support for Chancellor Merz’s ruling coalition hits a record low.
In the survey conducted by pollster Forsa for TV company RTL, the main opposition group, the right-wing Alternative for Germany party (AfD), topped the polls with 26% of the vote, equalising its earlier record from April 2025.
The government parties’ combined share of the vote dropped to a new low of only 37%. The CDU was down to 24% – three percentage points lower than just a month ago – while the SPD remained “stable” at just 13% of the vote.
The poll’s results marked a new blow to Merz after a recent survey showed he was even less popular with the German voters than his unloved predecessor Olaf Scholz was 100 days into the latter’s chancellorship.

China, US trade barbs over destroyer passage near disputed shoal
China’s military said on Aug 13 that it monitored and “drove away” a US destroyer that sailed near the disputed Scarborough Shoal in the busy waterway of the South China Sea, while the US Navy said its action was in line with international law.
The first known US military operation in at least six years within the shoal’s waters came a day after the Philippines accused Chinese vessels of “dangerous manoeuvres and unlawful interference” during a supply mission around the atoll.
In a statement, the Chinese military’s Southern Theatre Command said the USS Higgins had entered the waters “without approval of the Chinese government” on Aug 13.
The Scarborough Shoal has been a major source of tension in the South China Sea, a conduit for more than US$3 trillion (S$3.8 trillion) of annual ship-borne commerce.
In 2016, an international arbitral tribunal ruled there was no basis in international law for Beijing’s claims based on its historic maps. China, however, does not recognise that decision.

US accuses UK of 'significant human rights issues' and restricting free speech
The US State Department has accused the UK of having "significant human rights issues", including restrictions on free speech.
The unflattering assessment comes via a new version of an annual Human Rights Practices report, with its publication coinciding with vice president JD Vance's holiday in the Cotswolds.
It says human rights in the UK "worsened" in 2024, with "credible reports of serious restrictions on freedom of expression", as well as "crimes, violence, or threats of violence motivated by antisemitism" since the 7 October Hamas attack against Israel.
On free speech, while "generally provided" for, the report cites "specific areas of concern" around limits on "political speech deemed 'hateful' or 'offensive'".
Sir Keir Starmer has previously defended the UK's record on free speech after concerns were raised by Mr Vance.
In response to the report, a UK government spokesperson said: "Free speech is vital for democracy around the world including here in the UK, and we are proud to uphold freedoms whilst keeping our citizens safe."

British Foreign Secretary refers himself to watchdog after fishing illegally with JD Vance
David Lammy has referred himself to the environment watchdog after going fishing with JD Vance without the required licence during the US vice-president’s trip to the UK.
The foreign secretary hosted Vance and his family at Chevening House in Kent last week, where the pair fished from the property’s private lake. Anglers aged 13 and over must hold a rod licence to fish for freshwater species such as carp in England and Wales. “Lammy failed to land a catch, but all of my kids did”, Vance said.
The Foreign Office said an “administrative oversight” meant licences had not been obtained in advance. Lammy bought them as soon as he was made aware, and wrote to the Environment Agency to acknowledge the breach. “He also thanked them for their work protecting Britain’s fisheries,” a Foreign Office spokesperson said.
The agency confirmed the licences had since been bought. All fish caught during the visit were returned to the water.

In the history of Pride-loving Canadian prime ministers, you may have thought Justin Trudeau took first place. Apparently, he has competition.
Canada’s newest leader, Mark Carney, made an appearance at the Vancouver Pride Parade earlier this month. ‘This is the essence of Canada’, he announced, as he marched down the street and offered hugs to near-naked men in fetish gear.
To be fair, he’s not wrong. Since Trudeau came into power in 2015, Canada has earned a worldwide reputation as a country that embraces every extreme aspect of LGBT beliefs. It was, after all, Trudeau’s Liberal Party that introduced Canada’s gender-identity legislation, and has continued to support the use of puberty blockers on minors – a harmful pseudoscience that has been repudiated in the US, the UK and most of Western Europe.
Why we continue to celebrate Pride in a country that is clearly already accepting of all sexualities and identities, and where discrimination on such grounds is illegal, is a question worth asking. After all, what was once a political event, fighting discrimination and violence against homosexuals, has been reduced to a public advertisement for deviance and perversion.

China targets two EU banks in reply to Russian sanctions
China announced it would take countermeasures against European banks in retaliation for EU sanctions against Russia that hit two Chinese financial institutions due to their collaboration with the country.
China’s actions targeted two Lithuanian banks, UAB Urbo Bankas and AB Mano Bankas.
In an online statement, China’s Ministry of Commerce said organisations and individuals in China are prohibited from engaging in transactions, cooperation or other related activities with these two banks from August 13 onward.
China and Lithuania have had a strained relationship for years now, beginning with Lithuania’s decision to allow Taiwan to open a representative office in Vilnius in November 2021 and ignoring Chinese sensitivities regarding Taiwanese independence. In response, Beijing downgraded its diplomatic ties with the Baltic nation.
The ministry said in a separate statement: “We hope that the EU will cherish the long-term good cooperative relations formed between China and the EU and its member states in the fields of economy, trade and finance.”
It also called on the EU to “correct wrongdoings” and stop harming China’s interests and undermining China-EU cooperation.

Nuclear weapons spending is on the rise
Global spending on nuclear weapons increased by 11% in 2024 compared to the year before, surpassing $100 billion, or $190,151 every minute. ccording to the latest report by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.
More than half of this was by the United States, which spent $56.8 billion. China was the second biggest spender, accounting for $12.5 billion, followed by the United Kingdom with $10.4 billion.
The countries to have seen the biggest relative increases were the United Kingdom at 26%, Pakistan at 18% and France at 13%
According to International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), a cumulative $415.9 billion was spent by the nine countries that have developed nuclear weapons on their arsenals over the five years between 2020 and 2024. Spending has been increasing over the years, having already risen 34% between 2019 and 2023.

The UK government has issued new guidance on how to save water as parts of the country are dealing with a drought. Bureau of Labor Statistics head Dr. Erika McEntarfer is one of the latest persons President Trump has told “you’re fired.” Trump said this month that he fired Dr. McEntarfer because the president believed she manipulated jobs data. Manipulations, he stated, include the updated May and June BLS numbers showing the U.S. economy created 258,000 fewer jobs than originally reported, as well as the weaker than expected July jobs report. All of this, the president suggested, was designed to make Trump look bad.
Following Dr. McEntarfer’s firing, many commenters worried that President Trump’s actions would create the perception that government unemployment and inflation data is manipulated to produce the numbers desired by the president. A loss of confidence in government statistics could impact demand for US Treasuries. This is because the value of Treasuries is adjusted based on the BLS-issued Consumer Price Index (CPI). If investors don’t trust the CPI figures, they can demand higher returns, increasing government’s interest payments.
Trump is correct that BLS manipulates statistics related to the economy, but it has been doing so since long before Donald Trump moved to the White House.

Following threats of violence against public service workers, the French town of Noisy-le-Sec has canceled a planned screening of the film "Barbie".
The mayor of the city, Olivier Sarrabeyrouse from the French Communist Party (PCF), expressed his regret on Monday that "a small group from the neighborhood, under pressure from one individual, used their energy to prevent the screening of this film". The free open-air cinema event should have taken place last Friday.
