Japan automakers lose $20m a day from US tariff cut delay

Seven major Japanese automakers lose an estimated $20.3 million in combined profits every day the U.S. delays lowering auto tariffs.

The full-year hit from the duties is projected at $18.3 billion, dragging aggregate operating profit down 36% for six major producers, excluding Nissan, which has not given a forecast.

The U.S. raised tariffs on Japanese vehicles to 27.5% from 2.5% in April but agreed last month to cut the rate to 15%. Goldman Sachs Japan estimates the reduction will lessen the damage by $11 billion, but each month of delay adds roughly $680 million to automakers’ burden.

Mazda, which gets about one-third of its sales from the U.S., expected an 82% drop in net profit to $135 million this fiscal year, assuming the lower rate would start Aug. 1. With tariffs estimated to cost $1.6 billion, it aims to offset the blow with $540 million in cost cuts, but further delays could push it into the red. Subaru, with 70% of its sales in the U.S., forecasts a $1.42 billion hit and a 51% drop in operating profit to $1.35 billion.

In Canada, Nova Scotia just banned hiking, camping to crackdown on wildfires but some people think it’s overkill

Canadians are shocked after Nova Scotia announced $25,000 fines for those caught hiking, camping or fishing in the province’s woods, but the government is defending its decision.

The provincial government announced the new measures, which significantly restrict activities in the woods due to the risk of starting wildfires until Oct. 15 or until the ban is lifted.

Nova Scotia’s trial systems are now “off limits,” with camping, hiking, fishing and even driving through the woods now forbidden. And those who get caught disobeying the ban, could be served with a hefty $25,000 fine.

The province clarifies that people are still allowed to visit local parks and beaches, and will not be fined for taking a short walk to get to these areas.

Parks that have woods will also be restricted, with wooded areas being closed and only non-wooded areas open to the public.

Vance says US 'done funding Ukraine war' - demands Europe step up

Vice President Vance said Sunday he wants peace and to stop funding the Ukraine war, ahead of a Friday meeting in Alaska between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss a ceasefire deal.

“We’re done with the funding of the Ukraine war business. We want to bring about a peaceful settlement to this thing,” Vance told Fox News’s Maria Bartiromo on “Sunday Morning Futures.”

In Alaska, the Trump administration hopes for a breakthrough in peace negotiations with Moscow and a discussion around territorial acquisitions.

Earlier this week, the Kremlin shared a ceasefire deal with the Trump administration, asking for control of eastern Ukraine in exchange for a halt in hostilities.

Trump and Xi among four world leaders expected to attend Asean Summit in October, says Anwar

Four prominent world leaders are expected to attend the 47th Asean Summit scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur this October, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said the meeting will gather high-profile world leaders and would ensure that it yields results of lasting value.

“We look forward to welcoming the heads of government of Asean and dialogue partners, including US President Donald Trump and I believe Chinese President Xi Jinping. In addition, we received positive indications on the attendance from Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who currently hold the Brics and G-20 presidency respectively,” said Anwar in his speech during the 58th Asean Day celebration.

“But securing their presence is only the first step. The greater test is to ensure that they leave Malaysia and Asean feeling their time was well spent.

Anwar said some of the key issues that will be discussed include economic relations through intra-Asean trade and investments.

Philippines’ Marcos says China ‘misinterpreted’ his comments on Taiwan

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr said on Aug 11 that Beijing has “misinterpreted” his comments, saying Manila will be inevitably drawn into a conflict between China and Taiwan should one erupt.

China accused Mr Marcos of “playing with fire” after the Philippine leader said during a visit to India that “there is no way that the Philippines can stay out of it” due to its proximity to the democratically governed island.

“We are, I think, for propaganda purposes, misinterpreted. I’m a little bit perplexed why it would be characterised as such, as playing with fire,” Mr Marcos told a press briefing.

Mr Marcos said Filipinos working and living in Taiwan will have to be evacuated if a conflict does arise but maintained that he wishes to avoid confrontation and war. Over 100,000 Filipinos live and work in Taiwan, according to Philippine government data.

Bill Maher: Democrats must choose sanity over wokeness now

By Matt Margolis

Bill Maher continues to carve out a unique position as a leftist who openly challenges the woke left from within his own party. As I've pointed out before, Bill Maher may be a leftist, but he's spoken out repeatedly against the woke left, and that’s a good thing that I hope helps move the party away from crazy. It’s not working yet, but dare to dream. His critiques have been sharp and unrelenting, exposing the destructive elements that have taken hold in portions of the Democratic Party.

Yet Maher’s disdain for the woke left is not just comic disdain; it’s rooted in a deep frustration with how the progressive wing is unraveling the party and the nation. Whether it’s calling out the ridiculous outrage over the Sydney Sweeney ads or admitting that President Donald Trump was right about tariffs, Maher has shown an ability to be honest about the issues without blindly following the party line.

Visualizing the $58B weight loss drug market

Weight loss drugs have surged in popularity in recent years, transforming the pharmaceutical landscape. Companies leading the charge in GLP-1 development are reaping massive financial gains and wielding growing influence.

This visualization highlights the top brands dominating the $58 billion weight loss drug market—and the powerhouse companies driving their success.

In the U.S., roughly 12% of adults have tried GLP-1 drugs, and 6% are currently using them. The rapid ascent of these drugs has propelled metabolic treatments into a leading position in the R&D pipeline.

Despite the range of brand names, the market is dominated by just two companies: Eli Lilly in the U.S. and Denmark’s Novo Nordisk. Novo Nordisk leads with Ozempic, which commands nearly one-third of the market (31.5%), followed by Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro at 23.4%.

The remaining share is split among other brands owned by these same companies. For Novo Nordisk, Wegovy holds 16.5% of the market, Rybelsus 6.0%, Saxenda 1.6%, and Victoza 1.1%. Eli Lilly’s portfolio also includes Zepbound with 11.6% and Trulicity with 8.4%.

AfD candidate excluded from German mayoral race over alleged ‘lack of constitutional loyalty’

The main German opposition party’s candidate has been excluded from running for mayor in Ludwigshafen, an industrial city of 170,000 people in the State of Rhineland-Palatinate.

On August 5, the election committee of the town’s city council voted to ban Joachim Paul, a politician for the right-wing Alternative for Germany party (AfD) from standing for mayor in the election on September 21. The election committee comprised seven members, but not from the AfD itself.

The members voted with a six to one majority to exclude Paul, reportedly over doubts concerning his “loyalty to the German Constitution”. The reasons given by the interior ministry for recommending the exclusion of Paul were detailed in a July 29, 11-page-letter that was leaked in full by German news portal Nius.

They included a meeting with right-wing activist Martin Sellner, leader of the Identitarian movement, which promotes the remigration of foreigners in Germany. Paul had allegedly warned of a “population exchange” in Ludwighafen’s Hemshof district, an area where about half the population consists of migrants and which is a hotspot for drug abuse.

Among the more curious accusations was the fact that Paul had commended the oeuvre of British fantasy author J R Tolkien, specifically The Lord of the Rings trilogy, as “especially valuable for modern Conservatism” in a newspaper article.

Paul had written: “The protagonists in The Lord of the Rings fight for a cause greater than themselves: Their homeland, the survival of their culture, a just order and the defence against a global threat.

Hit by US tariffs, Indonesia plans to sell shrimp to China instead

US President Donald Trump’s 19 per cent import tariffs have left shrimp businesses in Indonesia in disarray. Shrimp farms are forced to reconsider their expansion plans amid orders from the US are drying up.

The United States is the biggest market for Indonesian prawns, buying 60 per cent of the country’s US$1.68 billion in shrimp exports in 2024. Andi Tamsil, head of Indonesia’s shrimp farmers’ association, estimates the 19 per cent tariffs could see total exports plunge by 30 per cent in 2025 compared with 2024, putting the livelihoods of a million workers at risk.

China is the world’s biggest importer of shrimp by volume, but Indonesians have preferred to sell to the US where they could get better prices. Before the tariffs, China typically bought only 2 per cent of Indonesia’s shrimp exports.

Now, the industry is working hard to promote its products to Chinese buyers.

“We have a very big opportunity in China that imported around 1 million tonnes of shrimps,” Mr Tamsil said. “Imagine if we could take just 20 per cent of China’s import market,” says Tamsil, who travelled in June with a delegation of industry representatives to the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou to meet importers, restaurant owners and agri-commerce platforms. More trips are planned.

Meta eavesdropped on period-tracker app's users, SF jury rules

A San Francisco Jury found that Meta had eavesdropped on the users of a popular period-tracking app, Flo.

The lawsuit, was filed in 2021 by eight women against Flo and a group of other tech companies including Google and Facebook, now known as Meta. The app asked users about their sex lives, mental health and diets before guiding them through menstruation and pregnancy. The women allege that Flo then shared some of that data with the tech giants.

Google, Flo, and analytics company Flurry all settled with the plaintiffs, however Meta fought through the entire trial and lost.

The jury didn't buy Meta's argument - ruling against them in a unanimous decision, and finding that Flo's users had a reasonable expectation that they weren't being overheard or recorded, and found that Meta did not have consent to eavesdrop or record. The company was found to have violated California's Invasion of Privacy Act.

According to a June filing about the case's class-action status, over 3.7 million women in the United States registered for Flo between November 2016 and February 2019 - with potential claimants expected to be notified via email and on a case website.

USA Today columnist calls Trump a ‘toddler’ for helping to plan 2028 Olympics

Nancy Armour called Trump a “toddler” and a “rambunctious puppy” for helping to plan what will be the first summer Olympics in the United States since Atlanta in 1996.

During a press conference on Tuesday, the president announced an executive order establishing a task force to plan the Olympics.

“America is a nation of champions, and in 2028, we’ll show the world what America does best, and that’s win,” Trump said. “The Los Angeles Olympics are shaping up to be a wonderful moment for America. . . . It’s a great time to be a sports fan in America.”

“Olympics organizers willing to treat Trump like a toddler to protect 2028 LA Games,” Armour’s headline read.

“It’s the oldest trick in the book for anyone needing to get something done when there’s an active toddler or rambunctious puppy around: Give them a toy or a game, or get them to do a task by making them think it’s their idea. The distraction keeps them busy and happy while you get some peace and quiet,” Armour wrote.

Norway to review sovereign wealth fund’s Israeli investments, investigate profiting from war in Gaza

Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre has tasked his finance minister Jens Stoltenberg to investigate the country’s sovereign wealth fund’s stake in Israeli company Bet Shemesh Engines Holdings.

Norway’s huge sovereign wealth fund, the world’s biggest, has earned millions from the Israeli firm that repairs Israel’s fleet of F15 and F16 fighter jets, which some have regarded as profiting from the war in Gaza.

Since the conflict broke out in October 2023, stocks of Bet Shemesh Engines have rocketed, jumping from 9,637 Israeli new shekels (€2,407) on October 5 to 66,550 shekels (€16,625) on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange on early August. The company increased its revenue by 23 per cent and its profit by 78 per cent from 2023 to 2024.

The fund had a $15mn stake in Bet Shemesh Engines at the end of 2024, according to data on its holding, giving it a 2.1 per cent stake. The value of its stake was more than four times higher than it was at the end of 2023, shortly after Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel triggered the start of the war.

After a recent report in Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten, which concluded that Norway was profiting from the war in Gaza, Støre said he was “very uneasy”.

The PM said he wanted clear answers on how the Israeli company had been assessed. Støre has called the situation in Gaza catastrophic and suggested that genocide was being committed.

Obama’s 2016 NPR interview comes back to haunt him in ways he never imagined…

At the height of the Russiagate frenzy, before the evidence, before the Twitter Files, before the whole thing unraveled, Barack Obama sat down for a soft-pitch, hour-long NPR interview designed to sell the biggest political hoax in American history.

Eight years later, that smug, elitist performance is aging like room-temperature milk.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of the Trump administration and intel leaders like Tulsi Gabbard, the truth is finally out. We now have proof, not suspicion, not random speculation or whispers, that Obama’s fingerprints were all over the plot to sabotage President Trump before he even took office—and after he won. It wasn’t just Hillary, like we’ve been told. It wasn’t just Comey or Brennan. It was Barack Obama. He knew. He directed. He approved… and he also pushed it.

It wasn’t some goofy misunderstanding. It was a full-blown coup effort.

Mexico’s President says U.S. forces are unwelcome in her country

President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico rejected the use of U.S. military forces in her country on Friday, responding to news that President Trump had directed the Pentagon to target drug cartels that the United States considers terrorist organizations.

“The United States is not going to come to Mexico with the military. We cooperate, we collaborate, but there is not going to be an invasion. That is ruled out, absolutely ruled out,” she said.

It remains unclear what plans the Pentagon is drawing up for possible action, and the order raises a range of legal questions. It is also unclear what notice the Mexican government had: Although Sheinbaum said U.S. officials had told her and her team that the directive “was coming," three people familiar with the matter said Mexican officials had been blindsided.

Depending on what the United States does, Mexico could pull back its cooperation on issues like security and migration.

For months, Mexican officials have in public and in private rejected suggestions of U.S. military action against drug cartels on Mexican territory.

Trump Tempers expectations ahead of Alaska "feel-out meeting" with Putin

During President Donald Trump's wide-raning news conference held at the White House on Monday, he was asked about the much anticipated Alaska summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which is of course stirring much controversy given European fears that he'll do a deal which sidelines Ukraine's interests.

Trump described the talks with Putin as merely a "feel-out meeting" and said that Putin "wants to get involved". He then voiced his belief that Putin wants to get the war "over with".

"I'd like to see a ceasefire, I'd like to see the best deal that could be made for both parties, it takes two to tango," he added, which could be interpreted as a jab toward Ukraine.

Trump at one point in his comments mistakenly said: "We're going to Russia. That's going to be a big deal." But then near the end of the remarks he offered a corrective, saying "I thought it was very respectful that the president of Russia is coming to our country, as opposed to us going to his country, or even a third, third party place."

Such warm words said of Putin will likely make Zelensky nervous, hearkening back to the opening months of Trump taking office, when Trump's relations with Zelensky hit a low-point, and criticisms aimed at Kyiv came weekly. Some analysts have already pointed out that these Monday statements from Trump don't bode well for Ukraine and a favorable settlement on its terms.

Ukraine's position has been to accuse Russia of simply trying to buy time, and that it's not actually interested in negotiating peace. The fact that Trump is even meeting with Putin is being felt as a huge slap in the face in Kyiv.

EU ‘funded Polish swingers club and luxuries for government politicians’ wives

Money from the European Union’s post-pandemic funds was reportedly used to buy luxuries for the families of the Polish Government-supporting politicians and for ventures including a swingers club.

The European Commission on August 8 asked Warsaw for explanations on the alleged misspending of the EU’s funds.

After an announcement in 2024 that funds worth close to €300 million from the National Recovery Plan (KPO) would be released quickly, companies from the hospitality, catering, tourism and culture sector rushed to submit applications.

The luxury items that qualified for funding included vehicles such as a Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q8, Lexus RX450H+ and Range Rover Sport. After the funding process ended, the government proudly announced on its website: “We have already signed 1,621 contracts,” with a map showing where the grants went.

Funds went to entrepreneurs for items such as coffee machines, floating houses, tanning beds and yachts. In one case an entrepreneur from Silesia received €100,000 for the “diversification of catering activities” in a swingers club.

Some €120,000 from the National Recovery Plan funds went to a councillor from Tusk’s Civic Coalition (KO) Izabela Piasecka to build a “relaxation zone” at her privately owned holiday resort.

Another €120,000 went to the wife of KO Senator Beniamin Godyla for a spa area in the couple’s hotel.

The wife of the KO’s wealthiest – according to public records – MP Artur Łącki received three grants from the recovery funds worth over €250,000 to develop his hotel business.

Brazil and India forge strategic alliance amid U.S. tariff onslaught

In a move to counter escalating trade tensions, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have reaffirmed their commitment to a strategic partnership, vowing to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors.

India and Brazil have forged a new strategic roadmap to strengthen bilateral ties over the next decade based on five key pillars, including defence and security, food security, energy transition, digital transformation and industrial partnerships in strategic areas.

The roadmap was finalised during a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brasilia on Tuesday. The two leaders had agreed during their meeting to almost double two-way trade to $20 billion over the next five years.

The two leaders tasked authorities to conclude four bilateral agreements as soon as possible, including an agreement on mutual legal assistance in civil matters and memorandums of understanding on defense industry cooperation, sports cooperation, and archival cooperation, according to a joint statement issued after the meeting.

This development comes in the wake of Washington’s imposition of steep tariffs on goods from both countries.

Trump to Sign Executive Order Targeting Banks Accused of Debanking Conservatives

President Donald J. Trump confirmed on August 5 that he will soon sign an Executive Order targeting major banks that discriminate against conservatives through debanking practices. In his comments made Tuesday, Trump claimed JPMorgan Chase gave him 20 days to close his account, though he did not specify the timing or reasoning behind the decision. He also stated that Bank of America refused to do business after he left JPMorgan.

The issue of debanking has been raised by conservatives who argue that financial institutions are unfairly targeting individuals based on political views. While banks often cite regulatory compliance or risk management as reasons for account closures, Trump and others believe these explanations mask ideological discrimination. “They discriminated against many conservatives,” Trump said.

Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan, in an earlier interview on CBS News’ “Face the Nation,” denied allegations of bias. Moynihan emphasized regulatory pressures and risk management as key factors in banking decisions.

The Linguistic Kill-Switch: Inside the Modern Propaganda Playbook

By Nick Giambruno

The next time someone sneers “conspiracy theorist,” “anti-vaxxer,” “climate denier,” “far right,” “hate speech,” “terrorist,” or the ever-popular “racist,” understand what they are really saying: stop thinking.

These words are a linguistic kill-switch—engineered to short-circuit thought by triggering a reflexive emotional spasm. If you encounter someone using these words, you can be certain you are not dealing with someone interested in a good faith effort to find the truth.

These terms are precision-guided psychological weapons, fired by unseen hands to herd the public mind. Recall the CIA’s own 1967 memo coining “conspiracy theorist” expressly to silence anyone doubting the magic-bullet fairy tale that supposedly killed JFK.

Although they are a poor substitute for an actual argument, these propaganda terms unfortunately work on many people. Using these words is almost like casting a spell—most people who hear them become hypnotized, immediately stop thinking, and turn into easily herded automatons.

Fortunately, the counter-spell is simple: demand consistent and logical definitions. Make them spell out exactly what they mean by “terrorist,” or “science denier.” Watch their argument collapse into ad hominem attacks, straw men arguments, appeals to emotion, and crocodile tears.

And if that all fails they will play the “racist” card.

In short, when sophistry is all they have, facts become kryptonite.

OpenAI in talks with investors about share sale at $500 billion valuation

OpenAI is in talks with investors about a potential stock sale at a valuation of roughly $500 billion, according to two sources with knowledge of the matter.

The talks are in early stages and would involve a secondary sale with shares sold by current and former employees. Thrive Capital, an investor in OpenAI, could lead the potential round, the sources said.

OpenAI’s valuation has been on a continuous upswing since the artificial intelligence startup launched ChatGPT in late 2022 and quickly established itself as the leader in generative AI. The company announced a $40 billion funding round in March at a $300 billion, by far the largest amount ever raised by a private tech company.

Trump’s Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy unveils Rule to Unleash American Drone Dominance as part of his innovation agenda | US Department of Transportation

The Trump administration has announced a proposed rule on drones aimed at stimulating the U.S. drone market.

“We are going to unleash American drone dominance,” Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said at an Aug. 5  press conference. Duffy noted that China dominates drones with 90 percent control of the market. “We’re turning over our skies to one of our main adversaries,” he said.

The new rule would allow people to get products such as a Starbucks cup of coffee via drone, he said, adding that it will also change energy production, farming, manufacturing, and filmmaking.

This regulation deals with drones being flown beyond the visual line of sight. Under the regulation, commercial drones would operate at under 400 feet above ground, and operators would need Federal Aviation Administration approval to fly them in certain airspaces. The drones can weigh up to 1,320 pounds, including what they’re carrying.

The proposed regulation was developed under an executive order that President Donald Trump signed on June 6 titled “Unleashing American Drone Dominance.”

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem reveals 80,000 Americans applied to become ICE agents

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem told Fox News' Lawrence Jones that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has received an overwhelming 80,000 applications for just 10,000 new jobs at the agency.

"Our recruitment efforts to hire 10,000 new ICE officers has been extremely successful. Lawrence, as of today, we have over 80,000 applicants for those ten thousand positions already," Noem said.

She continued, "People and patriots across this country that say we want to join. We want to help and be a part of this effort. It's overwhelming to see the amount of response in support that our ICE officers have gotten."

Perhaps the financial incentives, such as $50,000 signing bonus and tens of thousands in student loan repayment, were enough to drive the surge in applications. These benefits are outlined on ICE's official website.

Japan continues drifting from post-WW2 pacifist Constitution, inking landmark navy deal with Australia

Japan continues getting further away from its pacifist constitution adopted after World War 2.

Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles announced Tuesday a major deal with his country's Indo-Pacific trade partner Japan, hailed as "the largest defense industry deal ever made between Japan and Australia."

Australia plans acquire a total of eleven frigates from Japan in a major boost to its navy, valued at 10 billion Australian dollars (approximately $6.5 billion or €5.6 billion).

The major contract was awarded to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which will provide Mogami-class warships, which are highly advanced and with an array of weapons, with the bid succeeding over that of Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems.

This agreement marks Japan's first export of warships since before the Second World War, and only its second significant defense sale abroad, which is why some Australian analysts consider the landmark deal to be high risk.

According to sources, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries will supply the Royal Australian Navy with three upgraded Mogami-class multi-role frigates built in Japan from 2029. Eight more frigates will be built in Western Australia."

Additionally, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has never built warships outside of Japan.

Ghislaine Maxwell cleared Trump’s name in DOJ interview?

Maxwell was recently interviewed by the DOJ about roughly 100 people who were associated with her and her accomplice, deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

“Maxwell said nothing during the interview that would be harmful to President Donald Trump,” ABC reported, citing anonymous sources.

“There is also an audio recording of the interview, the sources said, but it’s not clear whether the administration plans to release the audio to accompany any public release of the transcript,” the outlet added.

“The public release of the transcripts could come as soon as this week.”

Maxwell was moved from federal prison in Florida to a cushier, lower-security camp in Texas after her DOJ interview.

A potential pardon would give Maxwell every incentive to clear Trump’s name - which is what she did, according to a Wednesday report from ABC News.
