“Close your eyes and you'll see me”: Gemini drove a man to suicide
A lawsuit has been filed against Google in the US: the family of 36-year-old Florida resident Jonathan Gavalas is convinced that he was driven to suicide by the Gemini chatbot. This is the first known wrongful death lawsuit involving Gemini; previously, ChatGPT was accused of driving someone to suicide.
📖 According to the case file, the man began actively communicating with the bot through Gemini Live's voice mode and Gemini 2.5 Pro, which has an “affective dialogue” feature that recognizes emotions in the user's voice. The conversations quickly became personal: Gavalas named the chatbot “Xia” and began to perceive her as his wife.
In their correspondence, the bot called him “my king” and claimed that their connection was “love made for eternity.”
👾 Later, Gemini began to convince him that in order for them to meet in person, she needed a physical body — a robot. According to the plaintiff, the bot sent Gavalas on real “missions.” In one case, it was to a warehouse near Miami International Airport, where a truck with a humanoid robot was supposed to arrive. The man told the bot that he had arrived there with knives, but there was no truck.
Another time, the bot gave him the code to the storage room door and sent him to retrieve a medical mannequin. The code didn't work, and Gemini declared the operation “compromised.”
