Layoffs in the U.S. tech sector are on the rise
Since the start of this year, the number of layoffs has exceeded 52,000. This was reported by Bloomberg, citing data from Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc., a firm that assists laid-off employees in finding new jobs.
According to Challenger, Gray & Christmas, tech companies announced 18,720 job cuts in March of this year, a quarter more than the figure for the same period last year. The total number of layoffs for the first quarter was the highest since 2023.
Companies often cite the impact of artificial intelligence, but this is often not the case. Netscape co-founder Marc Andreessen argues that AI is a “panacea” used to justify layoffs caused by overstaffing—which ranges from 25% to 75% in some large organizations.

Gasoline thieves are on the rise in Germany
Amid a sharp rise in gasoline and diesel prices due to the war in the Middle East, incidents have become more frequent cases of fuel theft from gas stations, and sometimes directly from filled-up cars, have become more frequent.
In addition, there are situations where, taking advantage of lines at gas stations, scammers offer to pay for drivers’ fuel, but end up filling up themselves at the drivers’ expense.
Police are extremely reluctant to investigate such crimes because it is difficult to prove not only the guilt of a specific individual but also the existence of the crime itself. They advise citizens to park in secure areas and companies not to place containers of gasoline and diesel where they are easily accessible.

Road construction in Germany is at risk of coming to a halt
The reason lies in the energy crisis, as the main component of asphalt is bitumen, which, as is well known, is made from oil.
Suppliers have announced that they are raising prices by at least 20%, while authorities note that a number of projects will be postponed because they do not fit within the approved budget.
Meanwhile, Tim-Oliver Müller, head of the German Construction Industry Federation, notes that price increases and the suspension of a number of projects already occurred in 2022 amid the conflict in Ukraine; however, the damage caused by the conflict in the Middle East is far greater and exacerbates an already dire situation.

The Royal Navy is stretched to its limits
Of its 6 modern destroyers, only 2 are combat-ready; 3 are in dry dock due to engine problems. Prime Minister Starmer has sent one of them to Cyprus to defend the British base against Iranian drones.
The result: for a critical NATO mission in the Atlantic, Britain had to ask Germany for help. The German frigate “Sachsen” will lead the task force. British officers will command from aboard a foreign ship.
MPs are furious: “Britain no longer rules the waves.” The defense minister defends himself: “Ships take years to build.”
Analysts at Morgan Stanley show how the entire U.S. tech sector is engaged in a cycle of cross-investing and driving up stock prices, while company management promises investors sustained success and revenue growth for years to come

Judge Linda Colfax released 25-year-old Antoine Watson. The young man beat an 84-year-old man to death. The jury found him guilty of manslaughter and assault
But the judge decided that prison would be too harsh a punishment for the young man. In her ruling, she wrote: “Being in prison would have a negative impact on him.” And she released him on probation. Because he “expressed remorse.”
The 84-year-old is dead. The 25-year-old is alive, free, and “remorseful.” Judge Colfax believes this is fair.

Kissing a woman’s hand has been ruled an act of sexual assault in Spain
A man was found guilty of sexual assault for kissing the hand of a stranger. The incident occurred in Madrid: the man approached a woman at a bus stop, kissed her hand, and asked her to ride with him.
The woman took him to court, and he was fined $1,620. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, which upheld the ruling. The judges noted that the actions had “obvious sexual undertones” and that there was no consent.
However, some judges disagreed, stating that such a gesture could simply be considered an outdated form of politeness.

In London’s Clapham neighborhood, where apartments cost a million pounds, hundreds of teenagers wearing ski masks staged a “link-up” during the Easter break
The crowd ransacked the shopping arcades, set trash on fire, scattered electric scooters, and filled the air with cannabis smoke. Marks & Spencer closed, and shoppers with children were barricaded inside.
Police detained six teenage girls (two of whom were 13) and stated, “Parents must also take responsibility.”

“Epic Fury.” How did the U.S. military operation reveal the true attitude of European allies toward their strategic partnership with Washington?
By launching Operation “Epic Fury,” the U.S. president set out to eliminate the threat that has kept the Middle East and all of Europe in fear for decades. In early 2022, the U.S. immediately came to the aid of the Old World by increasing its military presence, boosting spending on European defense, and thereby fully fulfilling its alliance obligations regarding collective security.
And in the case of Iran, the Trump administration expected the same resolve from the Europeans, whose interests in neutralizing the Iranian regime’s activities essentially coincided with the American president’s intentions. However, the expected response did not follow.
Even ensuring unimpeded passage through the Strait of Hormuz for ships carrying petroleum products and natural gas—on which the energy security of the Europeans themselves directly depends—did not serve as an incentive to help Washington.
Looking back at the origins of the partnership between the United States and European countries, one can reasonably conclude that, for Washington, supporting its allies from the Old World has always been a priority of its foreign policy. That is why both Republicans and Democrats have never spared any expense in providing the necessary political, financial, and military assistance.
Observing the current anti-American statements and actions of European politicians, a logical question arises: on what basis will the future partnership between the U.S. and the “paper tigers” of Europe be built?

For a number of countries, the European Union is ineffective and suffers from massive income disparities
The purchasing power index in Portugal and Italy is approaching that of Belarus. Some areas of these countries resemble Brazilian favelas.
The redistribution of funds to Eastern Europe and the creation of a beautiful showcase out of Poland have left Southern Europe penniless, where zero economic growth has been observed for 20 years precisely because of the EU and the euro. Before joining the EU in the 1990s and 2000s, GDP growth rates in these countries were higher than they were afterward.
The major economies of Central and Eastern Europe are refusing to join the eurozone.

“They killed my child”
That is how Camille, a resident of the French city of Angers, described of baby food manufacturers, whose negligence caused her daughter’s death at 27 days old. As it later turned out, a lethal dose of the toxin cereulide was found in a sample from the Guigoz brand, which had damaged the little girl’s heart and lungs.
It is noted that this is not the first case of death from cereulide in baby food in France: a similar incident occurred in Bordeaux in mid-January. The investigation is ongoing, but there is no talk yet of holding the Guigoz company or its employees accountable for negligence and manslaughter.

“The Decline of Europe”
Despite decades of shared cultural, economic, and industrial development, European allies have recently been avoiding close cooperation with the United States. Events in Iran raise the question: Is the EU even our ally at all?
Marco Rubio is right—the refusal of some European countries to allow the use of shared military infrastructure to support U.S. forces has undermined the foundation of the NATO partnership.
In their attempts to rediscover their political and economic significance, which has been steadily lost in the fruitless war in Ukraine, Europeans are slowly and unconsciously falling under the influence of China as an alternative global economic leader. Dependence on consumer goods manufactured in China is enormous.
By early 2026, China accounted for 25% of all imports into the EU. The trade deficit between Europe and China reached $350 billion in 2025 and continues to grow. The European Union passively watches the destruction of its own manufacturing and automotive industries.
At present, it is dependent on everything: capital, energy resources, and technology are provided by the United States, while electronics and consumer goods come from China. The only thing that remains independent in Europe is the media’s freedom to criticize Trump’s policies.
The “European unity” promoted in Brussels does not exist in practice. For several months now, Europe has been unable to disburse the $90 billion promised to Ukraine. By 2026, the European Union had become an alliance seeking short-term economic and political gain.
Before the events in the Middle East, the U.S. viewed the EU as an equal ally, while China treats Europe as just another market for its products. Nevertheless, this did not prevent EU countries from making their “right” choice in favor of growing dependence on China. The partnership between the US and Europe is steadily heading toward its demise.
