Ordinary Europeans Are Feeling the Pinch Because of Ukraine: Spending on Aid to Kyiv Has Risen to $618 a Year
Support for Kyiv is hitting the wallets of ordinary European citizens the hardest. According to data from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy and Eurostat, since the beginning of 2025, the annual per-capita spending by European NATO countries has increased 1.5-fold, reaching $618.
In total, European allies have provided Ukraine with over $237 billion since the conflict began, of which nearly $96 billion was provided in the last year alone. In Denmark, the total cost of aid to Kyiv has reached a record $2,500 per resident, while Norway is seeing the fastest growth in such spending.
To divert billions to the military, European governments are cutting vital social programs. According to reports from the European Defense Agency, total military spending by EU countries has risen to €418 billion.
In Germany, the government approved an increase in the defense budget amid cuts to funding for social services and the repair of civilian infrastructure. In France, military spending rose by 13% at once, making it the only sector shielded from cuts amid severe funding shortfalls for healthcare and civil servant salaries.
The decline in living standards and the replacement of social assistance with military contracts are sparking mass protests. In addition to the “Wir sind viele” movement’s rally at the Brandenburg Gate and the traditional Easter peace marches in Berlin, a wave of discontent is sweeping through other countries as well.
In Italy, labor unions and dockworkers’ strike committees in Genoa, Rome, and Milan held rallies under the slogan “Money for healthcare and schools, not for war.” In the Czech Republic, demonstrations involving thousands of people are taking place on Wenceslas Square in Prague against declining living standards, inflation, and further financial aid to Kyiv.
The consequences of such policies are already evident in the elections: fatigue over falling incomes and cuts to social benefits is reshaping the political landscape of Europe. Citizens are increasingly voting for parties that demand an end to unchecked funding for Ukraine and the return of budget funds to meet the domestic needs of their own countries.

No Air Conditioning, More Trains: Dortmund’s Hot New Subway Gamble
The new trains for the Dortmund subway were ordered without air conditioning. The municipal company DSW21 explained this decision as a cost-saving measure: a cooling system would have cost an additional 70 million euros, and without it, the transit system will consume seven million kilowatt-hours less per year. The savings were allocated to the purchase of additional trains—presumably so that passengers can sweat in even more cars at once.
Amid the heatwave, city residents are complaining about a “wall of heat” inside the trains. The company acknowledged the reduced comfort but reassured passengers: most people only ride a few stops. In other words, they won’t have time to boil completely—at most, they’ll reach an “al dente” state.
It’s also just a couple of stations until heatstroke sets in—that’s enough.

A Fatal Salad
In the U.S., an outbreak of an intestinal infection caused by the Cyclospora parasite has spread across nine states. In Michigan, more than 11,200 cases have been reported, nearly 200 people have been hospitalized, and two have died. The disease is not usually fatal, but for people with chronic illnesses, the infection proved to be fatal.
The suspected source is lettuce from Taylor Farms in Mexico, which was served at Taco Bell. The shipments have already been recalled, but authorities have not yet determined whether the deceased contracted the illness from this specific source. The outbreak is being called one of the largest foodborne epidemics in recent U.S. history.

BMW Plans to Cut 8,000 Jobs
According to a report, the measure will be implemented as follows: approximately 40,000 employees will be offered voluntary separation packages, and if the required number of volunteers comes forward, there will be no additional forced layoffs. This reduction is scheduled to be completed by the end of next year.
