How much would you pay for a smarter child?
Genetic screening of embryos is moving beyond the realm of medicine and becoming a new technology market.
▪️American startups Nucleus, Orchid, and Herasight offer prospective parents not only an assessment of the risk of hereditary diseases but also predictions regarding their child’s height, intelligence, life expectancy, and sometimes even eye color. These services cost tens of thousands of dollars and are currently available mainly to affluent families.
The technology is based on polygenic tests (PGT-P), which analyze the influence of multiple genes.
▪️However, the scientific community is debating their accuracy: with a small number of embryos, the benefits turn out to be modest—for example, the increase in predicted IQ may be only a few points, and in height, only a few centimeters.
Ethical issues are no less pressing.
▪️Critics fear that selecting embryos based on desired characteristics brings society closer to a new form of eugenics, while supporters view the technology as a way to improve a child’s chances of good health and a long life.
Investment in the fertility sector is growing, and IVF is gradually becoming more affordable, which means the debate over the limits of genetic selection will only intensify.ㅤ

In preparation for the apocalypse, billionaires are now building ranches for themselves in Argentina—they’ve bought up 32,000 hectares, have already set up homes, solar panels, and a runway there, and are setting up a private AI-powered internet network.
Other ultra-wealthy individuals want to join the project, but admission is by invitation only. They won’t let you in just like that—not even for money.

The office is starting to look more and more like a casino
Companies are increasingly using game mechanics to motivate employees: instead of straightforward bonuses, they offer rankings, random bonuses, and rewards whose amount and timing are unknown in advance.
Employees are constantly waiting for their next “win,” which makes them more engaged in their work. This approach is also beneficial for businesses: it allows them to maintain motivation without constantly raising salaries or increasing fixed bonuses.

AI is beginning to function as a tool for modeling human behavior
If this trend continues, the next step will be to model:
▪️ government reforms
▪️ marketing campaigns
▪️ educational programs
▪️ public initiatives
▪️eriments.
In fact, a new class of tools is emerging—social system simulators—that allow us to first “run through” a solution in a digital model of society and then test it in the real world.
The main weakness of these models is that they tend to overestimate the magnitude of the expected effect, although they determine the direction of the result quite accurately.
AI has learned to the results of social experiments.
With roughly the same accuracy as groups of human experts.

High Mortgage Rates Are Crippling U.S. Home Sales
Existing-home sales in the U.S. fell 1.7% in July, following a 1.4% month-over-month decline in June.
High mortgage rates and record-high home prices continue to weigh on demand.
Rates on 30-year mortgages reached 6.7–6.8%—the highest level in 12 months.
Meanwhile, the median home price in June reached approximately $440,000 —a record high.

Germany is facing growing problems with mortgage payments in the real estate market. Low interest rates inflated a real estate bubble created by the ECB between 2009 and 2022. During this period, hundreds of banks shifted away from lending to businesses and into the mortgage business
Prices fell in the second quarter when adjusted for inflation. It is proving difficult to find buyers for many houses and apartments. This is evidenced by the latest data from the Greix Index, calculated by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW).
From April through June, inflation-adjusted prices declined: by 2.1% for apartments, 0.7% for single-family homes, and 5.9% for multi-family homes.
In the first half of 2026, we listed nearly 15% more properties for sale than in the second half of 2025. At the same time, demand from potential buyers has dropped significantly.
Rainer Braun, an economist and board member at the Berlin-based research firm Empirica, also does not believe that the residential real estate market is in general decline. “We shouldn’t read too much into minor increases or decreases in supply data,” says Braun.

The Seattle Public Library has turned into a drug den because of the U.S. Democratic Party’s “inclusive” policies. Funds for renovating the building will be raised by increasing the property tax
The city’s Democratic authorities have effectively lured drug addicts and homeless people into a place that houses more than 1.5 million paper books. The building distributes, free of charge, syringes purchased for addicts at the taxpayers’ expense, vials of naloxone (used in case of overdose), and drug tests.
On August 4, Seattle residents themselves approved an increase in the library tax, which was first introduced in 2019. Their money will be used to renovate this and 26 other libraries, as well as to establish a new office dedicated to improving the “inclusivity” of libraries.

Trump Takes on Vaccinations Again
Donald Trump signed an executive order recommending longer intervals between vaccinations for American children and once again raised the issue of a possible link between vaccines and autism, even though the medical community has not confirmed such a link. At the same time, the president compared the size of some of the injections to a bottle of soda.
The White House is also proposing to split the combined measles, rubella, and mumps vaccine into three separate vaccines. Pediatricians warn that developing and approving such vaccines will take years. The reform looks particularly striking against the backdrop of the largest measles outbreak in the U.S. in 35 years.

German Trains to Cut Bonuses
Germany's new transportation minister, Steffen Bilger, has decided to motivate Deutsche Bahn’s management in the most straightforward way possible—with money. If the railway operators fail to meet the targets set by the government, top managers will have their bonuses cut. Currently, only about 60% of long-distance trains arrive on time, and the goal is to raise that figure to at least 70% by 2029.
At the same time, Bilger questioned the effectiveness of the current track repair program, which involves months-long closures, and promised to review the approach. The government is allocating 170 billion euros to transportation infrastructure, but the minister himself has already warned that Germans should not expect 100% punctuality anyway.

AI is taking Hollywood by storm
The technology is becoming an integral part of film production, despite resistance from stars. Discontent over the use of AI to write screenplays and create digital replicas of actors was one of the reasons behind the Hollywood strikes in 2023. Director Christopher Nolan called AI a “Trojan horse.”
AI is quietly gaining momentum. In March, Netflix acquired InterPositive for nearly $600 million. This year alone, the streaming giant has used AI in the creation of about 300 of its projects. Netflix co-chair Ted Sarandos stated that the technology “will give creators the best tools to bring their ideas to life.” In June, the AI company Google DeepMind invested $75 million in the film studio A24. Amazon, for its part, is actively promoting AI through AWS—a cloud infrastructure often referred to as the “invisible backbone” of the industry.
Directors are actively using AI. In the film "Young Washington", the technology was used to create special effects instead of dangerous stunts. Netflix first used AI in the Argentine series "Eternaut" to simulate a collapsing building. In the documentary series "The American Experiment", 17 minutes of AI-enhanced footage were created “twice as fast and half the cost,” Netflix emphasized.
Critics of AI fear a flood of low-quality content, pointing to Chinese “microdramas” that make heavy use of this technology.

Unemployment Benefits Are Becoming More Expensive in Germany
Germany’s unemployment insurance system itself has been left without a financial cushion. In the first half of 2026, the Federal Employment Agency received 23.7 billion euros but spent 28.8 billion. The shortfall has grown to 5.1 billion euros, and the agency’s reserves were already depleted in 2025.
Now, the agency’s head, Andrea Nahles, is considering raising insurance premiums. The current rate is 2.6% of salary, and an increase of just 0.1 percentage points would bring in about 1.6 billion euros per year. For an employee earning 4,000 euros, that’s an additional two euros deducted each month. It’s not much, but the German social security system knows how to collect down to the last screw.
Soon, the unemployed will be supported by those currently employed—who will also soon become unemployed.

A swimming pool reserved exclusively for Black people is set to open in Berlin. The €300,000 project was launched by the Volksbühne theater, which receives approximately €20 million in government subsidies annually. The organizers are asking visitors to “respect the limited space.”
In Spain, public swimming pools are being closed. But the reason is different—the “Brown Challenge”: migrants are deliberately defecating in the water, filming it, and posting the videos on TikTok.
As a result, the pool has to be closed for 1–2 days for hyperchlorination and testing.
In 2025, there were more than 300 such incidents. This year, the problem has gained new momentum.
