A Dutch company is attempting to destroy European culture and heritage by carving out a quarry in Bremamger, Norway. The site contains rock art made by our Stone Age ancestors that is over 8000 years old.

BruteNorse put it best in saying that Vingen is one of the most unspoiled petroglyph sites in all of Europe, but it won't be for much longer if this quarry goes through.

⚔️ Some Years ago, the skeleton of a 9 year old boy from Iron Age Holland was discovered near a burial mound in the town of Uitgeest (Netherlands).

He is nicknamed Aak which means made of iron.

He is estimated to have lived around 200 BC during the Late Iron Age when most people in this part of Ancient Frisia were farmers.

Not much is known about Aak other than he lived during a turbulent time when the Roman Republic was sweeping into Celtic and Germanic lands. ⚔️

Yesterday, on Midsummer, archeologists announced a monumental find in the Netherlands. A large sacred site with burial mounds and grave fields arranged as a solar calendar, for which it's been called the Dutch Stonehenge. They have found over a million items, which show the site was in use for at least 800 years starting from the early Bronze Age, but probably for much longer afterwards.

Because of the way this lovely country works, the site will NOT be preserved. There is an industrial development planned, and the municipality deems it isn't worth protecting since a large scale touristic attraction (like at Stonehenge) can't be realized.

This is of course outrageous, and together with Zonnevlam and Swesaz we are organizing action to try and save this sacred site. Please sign the petition so we can put pressure on the municipality! The website is in Dutch but it's very easy, enter your name/initials and email address, then don't forget to confirm your signature through the email they send you!

The Germanic input

Germanic people were in contact with the Roman Empire, working as mercenaries or rural workers. As soon as the 3rd century CE some settled in Gaul. Others came as invaders during the crumbling of the Roman Empire.

Gaul saw a reduction of the Latin influence with Germanic settlements & invasions. This brought on a simplification of Latin, which had already started. Settlers were often of military stock granted lands after their service. These newcomers spoke a non educated language called Vulgar Latin. Some likely did not have Latin as their mother tongue. This might explain why sometimes Roman languages have words with different Latin origins but corresponding meanings. For instance to eat is manger in French but comer in Spanish (the 1st comes from Latin manducare, meaning to chew, to masticate, while the 2nd comes from Latin comere; to eat).

On the boundaries of Gaul some non Romance languages strengthened or maintained their vitality, as we will see in the following post.
