@swordoffaith thanks that is important to consider that in the big scheme of things VPNs are only useful to circumvent regulations. However if you zoom in it can get nuanced: One can think of a VPN like a replacement of ISP both in terms of security and privacy. So technically it is true that VPNs don't improve those, however VPNs tend to pinky promise privacy unlike ISPs so at least I'd give them an edge there but they tend to be more obscure companies than ISPs so I'd give the security edge to ISPs because of that.

It's better for privacy, worse for security. Make sure to verify the signatures. (Which you should do anyway, but it's more important when VPN is used.)
Also for privacy the best is to use Tor.
