The Most Important Talking Point In World Markets !

1. Could China's DeepSeek startup pop the AI stock frenzy in the U.S. ?
2. Context: The AI-theme has powered megacap US tech stocks. And this in turn has been the sole driver for US markets. Could all this be at risk ?
3. What has changed ? Chinese startup DeepSeek (on Jan-20th) released an LLM that it said was trained at a fraction of the cost of AI systems from OpenAI, Alphabet's Google, Meta Platforms & other U.S. companies.
4. Will DeepSeek's performance-topping models on a shoestring budget call into question the billions being spent on leading-edge AI capex ?
5. What is Deepseek ? It is a 2 year-old Hangzhou-based startup AI R&D venture fully funded and operating under leading Chinese quant fund High-Flyer. High-Flyer was started in 2015 by friends from the prestigious Zhejiang University to use machine learning to trade equities, and in 2023 they spun off this independent research arm to use open-source models to create extremely efficient leading-edge AI models.
6. Deepseek’s stated goal is to pursue AGI, rather than to make applications & monetize, and founder Liang Wenfeng is known for being a 'geek'
7. Deepseek quickly made splashes with their DeepSeek-V2, R1 Lite and V3 models. R1 Lite, released in late November, was particularly noteworthy, in that it’s a test-time scaling model that beats OpenAI’s o1 model in a number of benchmarks.
8. Last week (on Jan 20th), Deepseek announce test-time scaling models R1 and R1-Zero, which remain competitive with OpenAI’s test-time models. It does an impressive job of contemplating your intent and explaining its approach in crafting its response. R1-Zero, meanwhile, is unique in that it was trained entirely without supervised fine tuning.
9. It’s unclear to what extent DeepSeek is leveraging High-Flyer’s 50k hopper GPUs (similar in size to the cluster on which OpenAI is believed to be training GPT-5), but what seems likely is that they’re dramatically reducing costs (inference costs for their V2 model, for example, are claimed to be 1/7 that of GPT-4 Turbo)
10. Their claim – that started to hit the US AI names last week – is that 'more investments do not equal more innovation'
