Huge Implications. 10 points.
1. For 15 years or more, Germany (the lynchpin for Europe) has seen poor growth (eg, 0 growth in 2024), been tightfisted in spending, followed America's lead in foreign policy (for much much longer), antagonized China, spent very little on it's own defense & so and so forth..
2. Last night, it looked like Germany took the first steps to break out of this stupor ! Germany green lighted massive defense & infrastructure spending.
3. Basically, Germany is heading not only for a massive U-turn on fiscal policy but also for a very strong response to the new defence & security challenges
4. Events @ the Munich Security Conference & in the Trump White House have clearly had a huge impact on the thinking of German leader Friedrich Merz, who until recently was still adamant that all challenges could be met within the existing debt limits !
5. Remember, what was agreed last night exceeds the reforms that the SPD had been calling for and by quite a margin
6. Highly symbolic that German leader Merz is using Draghi’s "whatever it takes" phrase. Ten years ago, the German Constitutional Court was ruling against Dragh’s phrase. Today, Merz not only used that phrase but did so with purpose.
7. Big question is if the the can-do attitude shown last night lifts sentiment & pulls in private investment, even before fiscal policy gets going
8. Further reforms by end-2025 - Plan is to reform the federal part of the debt limit/brake so that it does not overly restrict investments
9. A special session of the German Parliament is proposed for next week. Additional parliamentary procedures etc will be required before a final vote
10. These changes need to be watched carefully ! But they do feel very material. If all this clears, it will mean significant changes in foreign policy attitudes, defense alliances & should help European equities do very well as well !

Impact of US Tariff’s on China, Mexico, Canada (+ves for India)
Some Initial Thoughts
Pharma
- Chinese pharma exports to the US will become ~20% costlier, creating opportunities for Indian players.
- India’s pharma imports are minimal, and US tariffs on Indian pharma could potentially drop to 0%.
- No demand deflation risk as pharma has inelastic demand; drug shortages in the US are higher than two years ago.
- US manufacturing costs are ~8x higher than in India, making a full shift to US production impractical.
- India supplies 30-35% of US generics, creating a high probability of price & volume gains.
- If China faces tariffs in CDMO, companies like Divi’s Labs could benefit.
- Aurobindo Pharma has the largest US market share but lacks US facilities, whereas Cipla could benefit more due to its local US presence.
Chemicals
- Vinati Organics (31% exports) and Navin Fluorine (21% exports) have no major competition from China in the US.
- No significant benefits from US tariffs, as chemical companies have not indicated positive impacts in earnings calls.
- Setting up and running chemical plants in the US is 1.5x-2x costlier, making local manufacturing less viable.
Oil & Gas
- The US consumes ~16mn barrels/day and produces ~13mn barrels/day, but tariff changes won’t impact global oil prices significantly.
-
- The US can easily source oil from Latin America and neighboring countries instead of Canada.
- No major pricing fluctuations expected in Oil & Gas/Chemicals sectors.
Auto
- Tata Motors (JLR) could face risks if the US imposes tariffs on European imports, as JLR has no plants in the US.
Metals & Mining
- India has minimal direct steel exports to the US (~$500mn), and minor North American exports can be redirected elsewhere.
- Chinese dumping risk remains, particularly in other global markets.
- Jindal Stainless exports are small but could grow, benefiting from US tariffs on China.
- Tata Steel could see a slight negative impact, as it exports to the US from its Netherlands facility, though it’s a small part of the business.
- Coking coal imports from the US can be easily replaced by sourcing from other regions.
Cables
- Companies like Apar Industries, which have prior US supply licenses, stand to gain.
- Chinese dumping remains a concern, especially in markets like Europe and India.
Capital Goods
- Praj Industries expects positives from increased ethanol plant investments in the US.
- Triveni Turbine (40% export share) sees no impact, while Elgi Equipments (25% US revenue) could see some benefit.
- Fragmented impact across the sector, but power equipment companies remain attractive due to strong domestic demand.
- Domestic capex remains the primary focus, with multiple capacity additions supporting strong growth visibility.
- Top picks: ABB India, Ingersoll-Rand, Cummins India, Voltamp, Kirloskar Pneumatic.
