When he got elected, his net worth was $5 billion. After he finished his last term, his networth was $30 billion. He ran the $1 salary pump fake, but used the office to make at least $20 billion. This is the real reason Adams pulled out. Whomever turned out to be the unlucky person to get elected Mayor this go round was gonna do the same shit.
Their only chance to not have to do this would have been for the governor to increase taxes on the wealthy and anyone who has paid any attention to Hokul, knew she wasn't doing that shit. That's why she just threw Mamdani an extra billion and kept it moving.
Property tax increases will start the death spiral. Keep in mind the play the commercial landlords already made during covid. Most of them already scraped all the equity they could out of those bldgs. They did so with the expectation of being stuck with unsustainable vacancy rates, and they set up to walk away from those properties. So, in the end, they know raising property taxes on those commercial properties that aren't large residential buildings dont mean shit because the landlords aint paying. They cant pay. NYC commercial leases are almost always triple net, so they push the property tax expenses on to the tenants. No tenants, nobody to pay. Homeowners get super fucked in the end because they will get the biggest percent property tax increases, they'll pass on the increased expenses to their tenants. Most of these tenants hate their landlord because they think he/she is getting rich off of their rent payments, and shitbag tenants stop paying rents.
