1985 Philadelphia MOVE Bombing – Core Facts
Date/Location: May 13, 1985, 6221 Osage Avenue, Cobbs Creek section of West Philadelphia — a predominantly Black middle-class residential neighborhood of row homes.

- The resulting fire burned out of control for ~90 minutes (firefighters held back initially). It destroyed 61 neighboring homes and left ~250 people homeless.
Live on TV: Yes. Local Philadelphia stations (WCAU-TV Channel 10 and others) provided extensive live coverage with ground reporters and cameras. The bombing explosion and spreading fire were captured on live TV and videotape; the event was a major local (and later national) broadcast.
Aftermath:
MOVE Special Investigation Commission called the bombing and decision to let the fire burn “unconscionable” and reckless. No criminal charges against city officials. Federal court found the city used excessive force and violated 4th Amendment rights. Civil settlements: $1.5 million to Ramona Africa/families; $12.83 million to displaced residents (2005). Philadelphia City Council issued a formal apology in 2020 acknowledging the “fundamental injustice, cruelty, brutality, and inhumanity.”
