The Seven Breath Drill

When you are presented with a choice, don’t think too long about it because you increase your probability of action paralysis and reduce the effectiveness of the execution. There’s a tenet in one of those Bushido creed books — the Hagakure — where it states that a warrior must make a decision within seven breaths, and that’s because swift perspicacity facilitates clear, calm and decisive action.

You might not think that this matters to us, but those on the street that regard us as enemies commit to actions in less than seven breaths , sometimes they don’t breathe at all, so every additional breath we waste is an advantage awarded to them.


This isn’t a discipline you can just pick up and start using. You have to condition yourself to do it by applying the principle to everyday choices. Do you have a glass of water or a can of coca-cola? Do you walk to your destination, drive, or take public transportation? Where are you going to take your girl on a date? Whatever your choice, make it within seven breaths. Eventually, it will become second nature and transform you into a man of action.
