The striped tenrec is a small, unique mammal that lives in the tropical forests of Madagascar. Its distinctive black and yellow stripes and spines make it stand out among other creatures.
Unlike other mammals, the striped tenrec communicates by rubbing its specialized quills together, producing a high-pitched sound to alert its family members, a process called stridulation. Most often, stridulation is associated with insects, such as grasshoppers. Striped tenrecs are the only mammals that use stridulation.
