The brown (coastal) hyena Parahyaena brunnea is much smaller than the spotted hyena. It is characterized by a long coarse mane hanging from the back to the sides.

These hyenas live in the desert parts of the coastal zones of South Africa and stay close to the sea. The bulk of their food consists of the victims of large predators, although hyenas can supplement their diet with rodents, insects, eggs and fruits.

Nevertheless, brown hyenas are aggressive scavengers, often appropriating the corpses of victims of black jackals, cheetahs and leopards, including even adult male leopards.

Unlike spotted hyenas, brown hyenas are born with their eyes closed and open them after eight days of life. After three months, they leave their burrows. In addition, unlike spotted hyenas, all adult members of the clan bring food to the cubs

The Myrmarachne formicaria spider not only mimics ants externally, but also imitates their gait and the movement of antennae, which act as two front paws.

But the most interesting thing is that during the movement they periodically freeze, imitating the "blind" ants, who need time to think about the trajectory of their movement.

Mangalica is a domestic breed of pigs native to Hungary, covered from head to toe with curly hair. The breed was bred in the XIX century. It is generally believed that due to the peculiarities of the coat and physiology, the mangalitsa is closest to extinct pigs - such as the Lincolnshire curly-haired pig, which used to live in England.

Interesting fact: pigs that are starting to be kept as pets eventually lose their fur, because it ceases to be needed. Such wool is needed exclusively to protect the mangalitsa from cold and insects. Like wild boars, mangalitz piglets are born striped, with a camouflage color that changes with age.

In Hungary, these pigs are recognized as a national treasure.

The daytime butterflies of Curetis acuta are unremarkable, but here are their caterpillars!

The spikes popping out of her horns are not poisonous, but they can still scare off a predator. And there is an assumption that they spray a substance with an unpleasant odor... Maybe we didn't sniff.

These butterflies belong to the family of pigeons, the length of their front wing is only 21-23 mm, and they are common in such exotic countries as the Korean Peninsula, Japan (except Hokkaido), China, Taiwan, Indochina, Myanmar and the Himalayas

The hyena-like dog Lycaon pictus resembles a hyena only with a black mask on its muzzle - its physique is light and lean, its legs are high and strong, its ears are large, high-set oval "locators" that give the head a recognizable silhouette.

The body length is about a meter, the height at the withers is up to 78 cm, and the weight is 18-36 kg - it varies greatly and depends on whether the animal is full or hungry, since a hyena-like dog is able to eat up to 9 kg of meat in one sitting.

This wild dog was once widespread throughout the African steppes and savannas south of the Sahara, but now its range has become mosaic - mainly in national parks and in undeveloped landscapes in Namibia, Botswana, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Packs of hyena-like dogs chase and exterminate a large number of ungulates. Their usual game is medium-sized antelopes (impala, duiker, Thomson's gazelle, redunka) and old, sick or wounded individuals of larger ungulates (kudu, wildebeest, eland, zebra).

The large-headed turtle Platysternon megacephalum is a small turtle with a shell up to 20 cm long and with a disproportionately large head covered with one large, durable shield on top.

Her neck is long and mobile, but the head, because of its size, does not retract into the shell. The upper jaw is armed with a sharp, downward-pointing beak. The carapace is strongly flattened, the legs and a very long tail cannot be completely retracted inside, so the outer parts of the legs and tail are covered with large horn shields for protection. The fingers are equipped with short but strong claws and have no webbing.

It is distributed in Southern China (including Hainan Island), Southern Myanmar, Burma, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam.

The big-headed turtle lives in clear and fast streams and rivers with a rocky bottom.

Caracara plancus lives in the open spaces of South America. It is one of the largest birds of the falconidae family, second in size and body weight only to the gyrfalcon. The total body length is 55-65 cm, and the weight is up to 1.5 kg.

The food is diverse: from insects and worms to small animals, frogs and lizards. Often eats carrion, takes prey from other birds.

The behavior of caracaras is considered quite strange in relation to other falcons. This bird can often be seen walking on the ground in search of prey, using its long legs to move around the terrain.

In addition to the fact that birds prefer to walk rather than fly, they also create close bonds with members of their species. In his free time, he prefers not to float in the air, this is not for karakara

Kagu Rhynochetos jubatus lives all over the world on only one small island...

"The ghost of the forest" is how the aborigines of the island of New Caledonia call the birds that live exclusively in this point of the globe. The kagu bird is a local landmark and pride, which did not prevent the island residents from bringing the species to a state of extinction.

Kagu belongs to the crane-like. A bird with a height of half a meter weighs 0.7–1.2 kg and resembles a chicken in complexion: it has a dense body and a small head sitting on a short neck. The long (12 cm) crest adorning the head becomes noticeable only in an excited bird – it spreads out and turns into a magnificent mohawk, rising up.

To communicate with their fellow tribesmen, birds use a voice – rattling, hissing, cracking and even barking, sometimes heard 1-2 km away.

Kagu are territorial: the family occupies a plot of 10-30 hectares. During the day they rest, holed up in rock crevices or under the roots of uprooted trees and revived at dusk.
