This is the glass frog, Centrolenidae, from South America.
Its skin is so thin and transparent that sunlight partially passes through it, casting a very faint shadow. Why is this important?
Because its silhouette is not visible to predators from below when it sits on tree leaves. From above, this is less noticeable—the frog blends well with the foliage due to its blurred outline.
Researchers photographed 55 glass frogs on green leaves and a white background. Using computer analysis that mimics the vision of various predators, they assessed the frog's color and outline in each photo. They found that the frogs appeared lighter or darker depending on the background.
This effect was achieved not through active color change but due to the body's semi-transparency. The visible brightness of more transparent limbs changed more than that of the body.
Fun fact: Glass frogs have transparent skin, allowing their internal organs, including their hearts, to be visible! 💚🐸
De Brazza's Monkey (Cercopithecus neglectus) inhabits Central Africa. Named after French explorer Pierre de Brazza.
Did you know? De Brazza's monkeys have a distinctive orange forehead stripe and white facial fur that forms a "beard and mustache."
Habitat: They thrive in both dry mountain forests and marshy areas with tall grasses, blending seamlessly with green vegetation. When threatened, they freeze, becoming nearly invisible.
Social Structure: They live in small family groups led by a single male, which is nearly twice the size of females due to clear sexual dimorphism.
Diet: Primarily arboreal, they feed on seeds, leaves, fruits, and insects. Occasionally, they also consume bird eggs, chicks, and small reptiles. They may descend to the ground in search of food.

Texas Blind Snake (Rena dulcis) – The Worm-Like Wonder!
The Texas Blind Snake is a fascinating creature that resembles a shiny earthworm. These amazing burrowers navigate through ant tunnels in search of larvae to feast on. Their worm-like appearance allows them to feed on ant larvae without facing deadly retaliation.
Their small size and tough scales protect them from ant bites. This super-unique and well-adapted species can be found in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Interestingly, local owls catch them and bring them to their nests to help rid them of parasites! 🦉🐍
In Southeast Asia, it can be found in southern China, Thailand, Laos, Taiwan, and Vietnam.
Fun Fact: The Kallima inachus butterfly's remarkable mimicry is so effective that it can even fool birds, its primary predators, into thinking it's just a part of the foliage! 🌿🦋
Opossums (Didelphimorphia) are the only marsupial animals in the Americas. Some species have lost their pouches over time, and tiny newborns, immediately after birth, climb onto their mother's belly, hang onto her teats, and travel this way. As they grow, the young move to their mother's back.
Little opossums always stay close to their mom, no matter where she goes. In search of food, a female opossum easily walks both on the ground and along tree branches and wires in big cities, skillfully maintaining balance and holding on with their grasping paws and even their tail.
Fun Fact: Opossums are immune to the venom of many snakes, including rattlesnakes and cottonmouths! They can even eat venomous snakes without being harmed. 🐍😮

Watch as a stork dad protects his chicks from harsh weather!
After wintering in warm countries, storks return to their old nests high in trees or on poles to raise their young.
Chicks are born helpless, so for two months, one parent always guards the little ones while the other flies off to find food. Dad watches over them during the day, and mom takes over at night.
When the sun is scorching or rain is falling, the stork spreads its wide wings, gently shielding the chicks to keep them from overheating or catching a cold.
Fun fact: Storks have been symbols of fertility and good luck in many cultures throughout history! 🌍💕
It's also known for its loud, distinctive calls, which can often be heard echoing across wetlands.

Coconut Crab (Birgus latro) belongs to the hermit crab family, but it's often mistakenly called a crab.
This is one of the largest land-living arthropods: its body can reach up to 40 cm in length, and it can weigh up to 4 kg. Its claws can exert enough force to crush small bones.
In its "youth," the coconut crab doesn't differ much from a regular hermit crab: it carries a shell and spends most of its time in water. But once it leaves its larval state and exits the water, it can never return, making adult coconut crabs exclusively land-dwellers.
This thief with an incredible sense of smell is a creature that has inspired many legends on the islands of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. If you throw this giant crab into water, it will drown.
The Blue Komodo Pit Viper and Its Offspring
The Blue Komodo Pit Viper (Trimeresurus insularis) is an endemic species of the Lesser Sunda Islands in Indonesia.
On various islands of Indonesia, individuals with green, yellow, and orange colorations are known, while the rarest species of pit viper, the sea wave-colored snake, is found on the island of Komodo.
Although their bites rarely result in fatal outcomes, their venom causes severe pain, swelling, necrosis, and significant bleeding, including internal bleeding.
A distinctive feature of this species is their dark red eyes.
Pit vipers are excellent climbers, with many species being arboreal. They feed on frogs, small rodents, lizards, and birds.
Fun Fact: The Komodo Pit Viper's venom contains a unique enzyme that causes rapid blood clotting, making it one of the most potent venoms among pit vipers.
Helmeted Hornbill (Rhinoplax vigil) is a unique hornbill species found on the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo.
Here, you can observe a male hornbill feeding fruits to the female, who is incubating their eggs. Once the female selects a nest cavity and starts incubation, the male seals her in with mud, leaving only a small opening!
This is done for safety, making it difficult for egg-predating predators to find the clutch. Later, when the chicks hatch and grow, the male hornbill breaks down this mud barrier and reunites with his family.
Interestingly, some sources suggest that the female can also break the mud seal from the inside, which makes more sense—you never know what might happen to the male!
Fun Fact: The helmeted hornbill's casque (the large structure on its beak) is not hollow like other hornbills, but solid and incredibly heavy, making up about 10% of its body weight!
Pacarana (Dinomys branickii) - the fifth-largest rodent after the capybara, beaver, crested porcupine, and mara, though it is only slightly smaller than the latter. Its body length is 70-80 cm, and it weighs 10-15 kg.
The name Dinomys comes from the Greek "deinos mys" meaning "terrible mouse," and "branickii" is named after A. Branicki.
The lifestyle of this rare creature is poorly understood. It inhabits the lower parts of rocky mountain slopes and valleys in rainforests at altitudes from 200 to 2000 meters above sea level. It is very rarely encountered. In captivity, pacaranas are calm, non-aggressive, and peaceful; in the wild, they are slow and "phlegmatic."
Pacaranas also attract attention because they are monogamous and, once they find a life partner, stay with them forever. Pregnancy lasts up to 8 months, usually resulting in two offspring. They are extremely undemanding and start trying solid food just a few days after birth.
Secretary Bird: Africa's Elegant Snake Hunter 🦅
With its dignified stance and striking black-and-white plumage, the Secretary Bird (Sagittarius serpentarius) exudes an air of importance. The feathers on its crest resemble goose feathers, reminiscent of the quills used by court secretaries in historical times.
This African bird has earned the respect of locals by feasting on a vast array of snakes, even gracing the coats of arms of South Africa and Sudan.
Standing at 1.5 meters tall but weighing only about 4 kg, the Secretary Bird boasts an impressive wingspan of over 2 meters. Its unique proportions include powerful wings and long, stilt-like legs. Unable to take flight without a sufficient run-up, it can run at speeds exceeding 30 km/h.
Found exclusively in Africa, from Senegal and Somalia to the Cape of Good Hope, this bird is a true marvel of the continent.
Toucans (Rhamphastos sulfuratus) and Roseate Spoonbills (Ajaia ajaia) peacefully share a pond, even though the spoonbills act as if they're more important.
Did you notice the funny spoon-shaped bill? It's perfect for straining mud. The Roseate Spoonbill feeds on small aquatic animals: crustaceans (the reason for their red color), insects and their larvae, mollusks, frogs, and small fish.
Fun Fact: The feathers of Roseate Spoonbills were once highly valued by fashion designers to adorn ladies' dresses, leading to near extinction. While they're safe at their nesting sites, they still face threats from hunting during their winter migrations in South America.
Roseate Spoonbills, like all stork-like birds, fly with their heads stretched forward in a long line. Throughout the day, they often doze standing on one leg, tucking their bill on their chest or under their wing, and at night, they roost in well-hidden spots among impenetrable swamps.
Have you ever seen a snake drinking?
The black-necked spitting cobra (Naja nigricollis) is a venomous snake. When threatened, it bites or spits venom up to 3 meters forward, aiming for the eyes to cause temporary blindness.
But before shedding its skin, the cobra experiences such intense thirst that its self-preservation instincts take a backseat—it can be safely given water without fear of being bitten. This cobra is even accustomed to humans: it senses the familiar scent of its owner, sticking out its thin, forked tongue.
Unlike other animals, a snake can't lap water with such a small tongue. Instead, it absorbs water with tiny folds in its mouth, then uses muscles to push it down to its stomach.
Fun fact: Cobras can "taste" the air with their tongues, which helps them track prey and navigate their environment.
Elephants engage in bloodless clashes to establish their place in the hierarchy. You can witness one of these clashes here.
Elephants typically communicate using infrasound, so their language remained a mystery for a long time. Research by Christian Herbst from the University of Vienna, conducted on the larynx of a deceased elephant, revealed that elephants use vocal cords to communicate.
The "vocabulary" of the elephant language turned out to be quite rich – Herbst recorded about 470 different stable signals that elephants use.
They can use these signals to communicate with each other over long distances, warn of danger, announce births, and use various addresses to members of the herd, depending on their position in the hierarchy.
Fun Fact: Elephants can produce sounds as low as 14 Hz, which is below the range of human hearing! 🐘💨
Japanese Giant Hornet (Vespa mandarinia) - The World's Largest Hornet
The Japanese giant hornet is the largest hornet in the world, with an average body length of 5.5 cm, a wingspan of 7.5 cm, and a stinger slightly over 6 mm long.
This hornet belongs to the family of true wasps, which is why it has a coloration similar to the wasps we are familiar with. Its habitat ranges from Korea, China, Japan, Nepal, to India.
The stinger of this hornet rarely remains in the victim's body (it can sting multiple times), and its neuroparalytic venom contains mandarotoxin. After a sting, a person may experience severe pain, allergic reactions, cardiac arrest, and kidney dysfunction.
Japanese giant hornets are aggressive predators. They feed on both ripe fruits and other insects, such as their close relatives, bees. A scout finds a bee nest and marks it, then several hunter hornets locate and raid the bee colony. A group of 30 hornets can destroy a colony of 20-30 thousand bees.
Tasmanian Tiger (Thylacinus cynocephalus) - the largest native predator of Australia to survive until modern times.
In 1936, the last known Tasmanian Tiger, a male named Benjamin, died in a private zoo in Hobart.
Paleontologists believe that just a few thousand years ago, this unique creature roamed across the entire continent. However, by the time Europeans arrived, it had become extinct everywhere except on the island of Tasmania.
The Tasmanian Tiger is a striking example of convergent evolution: despite not being directly related to canines, it developed similar anatomical and behavioral traits.
While scientists agree that the Tasmanian Tiger is extinct, some enthusiasts still believe that this creature may live on in the remote corners of Tasmania. A few even claim to have seen it!
Fun Fact: The Tasmanian Tiger was not a tiger at all, but a marsupial, carrying its young in a pouch like a kangaroo! 🦘🐾
Kallima inachus - a day-flying butterfly from the family Nymphalidae, a classic example of protective coloration (mimicry).
This is a rather large butterfly with a wingspan of 60-110 mm. The upper side of the wings is brightly colored in blue with a metallic sheen and orange stripes.
The underside, however, is highly variable and resembles a dry leaf with a distinct central vein and a petiole-like structure formed by the tails of the hindwings.
When the butterflies settle on a branch and fold their wings, they take on the appearance of a dry leaf: short projections on the hindwings press against the branch, resembling a petiole; the pattern and color of the underside of the folded wings so closely mimic the color and venation of a withered leaf that it's very difficult to distinguish this butterfly from the leaves at close range.
It inhabits India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar.
This hungry leopard had no choice but to admit defeat after a fight with a porcupine.
The predator was seen chasing the spiky rodent, repeatedly striking with its paws against the impenetrable defense.
This strange battle, lasting an hour and a half, forced the leopard to take several breaks to remove the quills from its paws and lick its wounds, while the brave porcupine stayed nearby, almost taunting its opponent.
Eventually, the leopard admitted defeat, and the pair slipped away, as if declaring a truce...
Fun fact: Porcupine quill wounds can be very painful if they become inflamed. Interestingly, 9 out of 10 leopard man-eaters had such scars, which hindered their ability to hunt faster prey than humans.
Gouldian Finch (Erythrura gouldiae) - a bird from the weaver finch family, native to Australia. In one population, two, and rarely three, different color variations of the top of the head are often found. They freely interbreed, making it impossible to distinguish subspecies.
Gouldian finches have become rare in their homeland, so the IUCN classifies the species as endangered. Worldwide, this species is kept as a decorative bird due to its colorful plumage.
The British naturalist and animal painter John Gould discovered this species during his travels in Australia. In memory of his wife Elizabeth Gould, who accompanied him on these trips and died soon after, he named the species Lady Gould's Amadine.
Gouldian finches are very colorful birds, with their head plumage varying greatly. In the wild, black-, red-, and yellow-headed variants are found.
Swifts can't take off from a flat surface—they need to be tossed into the air to fly!
Did you know that swifts spend most of their lives in the air? They even sleep while flying! These amazing birds can reach speeds of up to 110 miles per hour and can fly for up to 10 months without landing. Their wings are uniquely adapted for long, sustained flights, making them one of the most remarkable birds in the sky. 🦅✨
Sultan's Bird: The Purple Swamphen
The Purple Swamphen, or Sultan's Bird, is found in the eastern hemisphere, from Europe and Africa to Australia and New Zealand, primarily in tropical and subtropical climates.
In our latitudes, the Purple Swamphen is rare if it inhabits at all. This remarkable bird is listed in the Red Books of some countries.
It inhabits the shores of marshes, small lakes, and sea bays with dense reeds, sedges, or bulrushes, where it secretly spends most of its life. It feeds on various parts of aquatic plants, as well as to a lesser extent on snails, crustaceans, insects, fish eggs, and frogs.
Notice the long toes of the Purple Swamphen, which help it walk on shallow water (over the leaves and roots of aquatic plants).
Fun Fact: The Purple Swamphen is known for its striking appearance, with vibrant purple-blue plumage, a red bill, and a distinctive white shield on its forehead.
Orchid Mantis (Hymenopus coronatus) - A Master of Aggressive Mimicry
The orchid mantis is one of the most famous examples of aggressive mimicry. Native to Southeast Asia, these fascinating creatures primarily feed on insects like butterflies, flies, bees, and crickets.
While small, inconspicuous males lie in wait for prey, females use their striking appearance to their advantage. They are so large and vibrant that they can even outcompete real flowers in attracting pollinating insects!
Aggressive mimicry involves luring prey by resembling a harmless or attractive species. To enhance their floral resemblance, female orchid mantises have evolved to become larger and more colorful over time.
Females of this species mature more slowly than males, live longer (up to 8 months, compared to males' 5-6 months), and are nearly twice as large (up to 6 cm). Their vibrant colors and unique appearance make them a true marvel of the insect world. 🌸🦗
Admire the Guinea Turaco (Tauraco persa) - a real beauty, isn't it?
Like all members of the turaco family, this crested bird spends most of its life in trees, only descending to the ground for water. It's not a strong flier, preferring to climb from branch to branch.
Its diet mainly consists of tropical fruits - dates, wild figs, musangi, ficus, macarangas, rauwolfia, cissus, and nightshade. Additionally, the turaco eats flowers and buds.
You wouldn't call this bird a giant, though it's not small either: it's about 40 cm long, but weighs only 250-300g.
Fun fact: Turacos have unique green and blue feathers, which are not caused by pigments but by light refraction in the feathers' structure, a phenomenon known as structural coloration.
Warthog (Phacochoerus africanus) visits the spotted mongoose (Mungos mungo) for a cleaning session!
These clever mongooses eagerly remove ticks and other parasites from the warthog's skin. This mutualistic relationship benefits both species, as the mongooses get a meal while the warthog gets a much-needed grooming session.
Fun fact: Warthogs have a unique walking style called "knuckling," where they walk on their knuckles to protect their hooves and keep them sharp for digging.
