The Orchid Mantis is another unrivaled master of disguise among insects!

In 1879, Australian journalist James Hingston mistakenly took the mantis for an orchid. Returning from a trip to Indonesia, he noticed that the orchid had completely devoured an insect. Only later, in 1972, scientists identified the culprit as a mantis, not a real orchid. Since then, scientists have wondered why this mantis always wears floral attire.

The Orchid Mantis, Hymenopus coronatus, is a variety of praying mantis. However, unlike green or brown mantises, the orchid mantis's exoskeleton is colored in bright hues like an orchid flower. Of the mantis's six legs, the four hind legs can expand at the "thigh" area. When the mantis crouches and spreads its hind legs, its "thighs" look like orchid petals.

They inhabit South America, east of the Andes. They feed exclusively on plants, preferring their soft parts.

🤔 Why are sloths so slow?

🍃 Leaf-based diet is very low in nutrients and calories. To cope with this low calorie intake, sloths have evolved to have a very slow metabolism. This allows them to survive on minimal energy. 🦥

🐌 Their slow movements also help them avoid detection by predators. By moving slowly and blending in with their surroundings, sloths can go unnoticed by animals that might see them as prey. 🍃

🌳 Living in the treetops also means sloths don't need to move quickly. They have long arms and curved claws that allow them to hang from branches easily. This arboreal lifestyle suits their slow pace perfectly. 🦥

🐦 Caring for their young is something special for birds!

In addition to tasty worms that the chicks receive directly in their beaks, the mother also keeps the nest clean by eating the "waste bags"! 🤨

Bird parents go to great lengths to ensure their offspring thrive. They tirelessly hunt for food, often regurgitating it directly into the mouths of their hungry chicks. But that's not all - they also maintain a clean nest by consuming the fecal sacs produced by their young. These sacs are like little packages that encase the chicks' waste, making them easy for the parents to remove and devour. This helps keep the nest sanitary and free of parasites or bacteria that could harm the developing birds. It's just one of the many amazing ways that bird parents provide for their offspring! 🐣🌿

Pangolins are insectivores, feeding on termites and ants, which helps maintain the balance of the forest ecosystem by controlling insect populations. The burrows they create are also used by other forest dwellers.

Unfortunately, pangolins are victims of illegal wildlife trade due to the high demand for their meat and scales. 🐾🌿 Protecting these unique creatures is crucial for maintaining healthy forests. 🌳🦠
