🌊 Ocean Secrets 🌊
Gaboon Viper: The Stealthy Hunter 🐍
Meet the Gaboon Viper (Bitis gabonica), one of the largest and thickest vipers, reaching 1.8m in length and 47cm in girth. Its massive, triangular head is separated from its body by a narrow neck. 🤯
Despite its calm nature, rarely reacting to external stimuli, its bite poses a serious threat. Attacks on humans are rare, but deadly. 💀
The viper's camouflage mimics old, fallen leaves and decaying plant parts, allowing it to blend seamlessly into its surroundings. This helps it hunt, as seen in this video, where it takes down a guinea fowl. 🐓👀
🐸 Meet the Pygmy Hippopotamus (Hexaprotodon liberiensis) 🌟
Unlike regular hippos, these little ones live alone and don't defend their territory. Locals call them "mve-mve" or "nigbwe". 🌿
Adults reach 75-85 cm in height and 150-175 cm in length, weighing 180-275 kg (much smaller than regular hippos, which can weigh over 3500 kg!) 🤯
Pygmy hippos spend more time on land, but still need water to survive. Their skin requires regular baths! 🚿 During the day, they rest in water or coastal thickets, and at night, they venture into the forest to feed. 🌃
Interestingly, when in danger, they don't jump into the water, but instead run into the nearest forest thicket. 🏃♀️
And, unlike regular hippos, their babies are born on land, not underwater! 👶 You're looking at one of them right now! 😍
🦇 Meet Vampyrella Lateritia, a single-celled microorganism known as the "vampire amoeba". It attacks other microscopic organisms like algae, penetrating their cell walls and extracting their contents.
🔍 This video, recorded using time-lapse light microscopy, shows the process of penetration, suction, and extraction of cells from the filamentous algae Spirogyra. Vampyrella inhabits freshwater environments, while other species of vampyrellids can be found in soil and marine environments. 🌿💦
African black egrets have a unique hunting technique 🐦
They use their wings to create a false sense of security for fish 🌊
By spreading their wings, they create a shade, blocking light and attracting fish 🌴
Small fish seek shelter in the shade, unaware of the danger, and get caught by the egret's long beak 🐟
🌟 The California Quail is a bird species native to the western coast of North America.
🌎 Introduced to Hawaii, New Zealand, Chile, and Argentina.
🐦 They live in groups of 10-40, foraging on the ground and roosting in trees.
🌿 Their diet consists of seeds and small insects.
🏠 Popular as decorative birds, they thrive in aviaries with other species, but not with other galliforms.
🎉 It's also the state bird of California! 😊
🐍 The royal cobra, Ophiophagus hannah, is known to hunt other snakes, its main diet.
👀 It's better to deal with one big snake than a dozen small ones.
📹 In this video, its prey is a rat snake, Pantherophis obsoletus.
🐍 Its scientific name means "snake eater".
🦀 Fiddler crabs, also known as Uca mjoebergi, are small creatures, 1.5-2.5 cm in body length.
🔍 Males have large right claws, used for defense, attracting females, and protecting their burrows.

🌊 They live in muddy areas, digging burrows to hide during high tide and searching for food during low tide. 🌴
🦌 The Javan mouse deer is the smallest even-toed ungulate on Earth,
with a body length of 45-55 cm and weight of 1.5-2.5 kg.
It has no horns, but large upper canine teeth.
Found in Southeast Asia and Israel, it inhabits forests
with dense undergrowth, often near water.
These shy animals are nocturnal, sleeping in rock crevices
or hollow tree trunks during the day. 🌃
🐦 The Lyrebird is a singing bird, a symbol of Australia, found in the east and Tasmania.
It can mimic other birds, mammals, and sounds like train signals and chainsaws.
🎶 Males have a beautiful 16-feather tail, resembling a lyre, while females have a short brown tail.
The Egyptian Plover, also known as the Crocodile Bird,
catches flies and eats leftover meat 🐜🍖️.
Crocodiles don't need teeth cleaning, their teeth grow and replace themselves 🦷.
They lie with their mouths open to cool down 😴.
The teeth cleaning myth originated from ancient Greeks 🤷♂️.
You've been waiting to see a baby cobra hatch from its egg... or not? 🐍🥚
The royal cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) is the largest venomous snake, growing up to 3-4 meters. It grows throughout its 30-year lifespan.
Found in tropical forests of South and Southeast Asia, including India and Indonesia. 🌴
🦔 Porcupines are large rodents 🐭. The most known is the crested porcupine.
It can weigh up to 27 kg and reach 90 cm in length 📏.
Porcupines have two types of quills: long and flexible, and short and stiff 🤯.
They can raise their quills using strong muscles 💪.
Porcupines are generally quiet, but they grunt and puff when threatened 😬.
🐃 The Anoa, a dwarf buffalo, is the smallest buffalo species, with a body length of 160cm and a weight of up to 300kg.
🌴 Found in Indonesia, on the island of Sulawesi.
🚨 Both species are endangered due to deforestation and hunting.
🐯 Despite protection, they are hunted for trophies, with a 90% population decline between 1979-1994.
🦌 European roe deer are elegant animals with a blunt snout and short tail.
Their coat is uniform, golden-red in summer and gray in winter.
🔍 Interestingly, their eyes glow red-yellow at night.
They feed on grass, berries, and mushrooms, and love acorns 🌳
🕷️ Meet the Brazilian Jewel Tarantula (Typhochlaena seladonia), a unique tree-dwelling spider that builds its home under tree bark. It ambushes its prey by hiding under a "trapdoor" and pouncing when the time is right. 🌳
These spiders are quite small, with males reaching 3-4 cm and females 4-6 cm in length, including their legs. 🐜
Despite their name, they don't feed on birds, but rather on insects. They're related to larger bird-eating spiders, hence the name. 🐜
Their stunning coloration, featuring black, blue, yellow, red, and pink hues, earns them their "jewel" title. 💎 Their two-toned, iridescent legs are a sight to behold, making them one of the most beautiful spiders in the world. 🌟
Golden Plover's Clever Trick 🐦
The Golden Plover (Pluvialis apricaria) protects its nest by distracting humans. If you didn't spot the 4 eggs at first, that's intentional! They're speckled to blend in with rounded stones. 🌎
Now, the mother plover will pretend to be injured, leading you further and further away - "catch me, it's so easy, I'm weak!" 😂
Then, she'll chuckle at the gullible human, slip into the grass, and quietly return to incubate her precious eggs... 👀
Fun fact: Golden Plovers are known for their impressive migrations, traveling up to 3,000 miles each way between their breeding and wintering grounds! 🌟
Wood Ducks: The Stunning Relatives of Mandarin Ducks 🦆
Meet the Wood Ducks (Aix sponsa), close relatives of the breathtaking Mandarin Ducks. Their coloring is only slightly less vibrant, but just as stunning! 🌟
While Mandarin Ducks inhabit Asia, Wood Ducks call the USA home, with some populations also found in Canada and Cuba. They're often kept in European parks for decorative purposes, where they sometimes escape into the wild. These ducks feed on both plants and animals, and nest in tree cavities, typically in deciduous trees. 🌳
Did you know? Wood Ducks prefer small, freshwater habitats like forest lakes, marshes, and slow-moving rivers. They often settle on shaded shores with abundant oak, willow, and poplar trees. 🌲
In the wild, they choose old trees with cavities that have entrance holes at least 9 cm in diameter and 20 cm deep. In captivity, nesting boxes can replace these natural cavities. 🏠
🦋 The giant stick insect Phasma gigas lives in Australia, New Guinea, and Indonesia.
🌿 They mimic sticks and leaves, with "phasma" meaning ghost or phantom in Latin.
🍃 All known stick insects are herbivores, eating leaves from various plants, including rose, oak, and eucalyptus. 🌸
🐨 Meet the tree kangaroo, Dendrolagus!
