The Crowley Lake Columns in California formed around 760,000 years ago after a massive volcanic eruption. Groundwater moving through hot volcanic ash created hardened vertical columns, which stayed buried for thousands of years.
When the Crowley Lake Reservoir was created in 1941, waves gradually eroded the softer rock around them, revealing the strange formations along the shore.
