Actress Octavia Spencer played Vaughan, a retired mathematics teacher, who started working at the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory in 1943 as a temporary war job. This eventually led her to become the first African-American female supervisor in NASA history in 1949.

As a society we have the opportunity to examine our behaviours and beliefs for biases that permit violence to continue. Think about how you define masculinity and femininity, and how your own biases and stereotypes influence you. From the attitudes we have about gender violence to the policies we support in our communities, we can all take action to stand against gender violence. Rather than listening for a “no,” make sure there is an active “yes,” from all involved. Adopt enthusiastic consent in your life and talk about it. Phrases like “she was asking for it” or “boys will be boys” attempt to blur the lines around sexual consent, placing blame on victims, and excusing perpetrators from the crimes they have committed. While those that use these lines may have fuzzy understandings of consent, the definition is crystal clear. When it comes to consent, there are no blurred lines
The examples we set for the younger generation shape the way they think about gender, respect and human rights. Start conversations about gender roles early on, and challenge the traditional features and characteristics assigned to men and women. Survivors of violence are speaking out more than ever before, and everyone has a role to play to ensure they can have justice.
Don’t say, “Why didn’t she leave?”
Do say: “We hear you. We believe you. We stand with you.”
When a woman shares her story of violence, she takes the first step to breaking the cycle of abuse. It’s on all of us to give her the safe space she needs to speak up and be heard.

Cultural identities contain the histories of a people that include traditions, struggles, achievements, and triumphs. Cultures nourish pride, resilience, belonging, intersectional identities, and connection to community. But culture is used to justify gender violence and inequality by evoking traditional beliefs and practices about how women and girls should be treated. If culture defines the spaces within which power is expressed and gender roles are enshrined, then our movement is here to push back. Eliminating GBV will not be quick or easy and that there is no simple, one size fits all solution. GBV is not a new phenomenon; its roots are deeply woven into the fabric and history, reflected in long standing attitudes, stereotypes, and biases about women, and appropriate gender roles and interactions. Accomplishing long lasting, substantive change will therefore require more than Band-Aid measures; sustained and intentional efforts are necessary to tackle deeply entrenched practices and systemic barriers. It will take time to move beyond a stubborn, unspoken narrative that continues to disbelieve survivors. However, progress is possible and this moment calls for bold action and an unflinching commitment to accomplishing meaningful change. No one should have to endure GBV in any form or at any time. No one should feel unsafe in their homes, schools, workplaces, or communities. Everyone deserves a destiny that allows them to chart their own course and determine their own future free from discrimination, coercion, or violence.

የ5 አመቷን ህጻን የደፈረው ወልደሚካኤል አሚጋ የተባለ ግለሰብ በፅኑ እስራት መቀጣቱን ከፍትህ ሚኒስቴር የተገኘው መረጃ ያሳያል።
የዐቃቤ ህግ የክስ መዝገብ እንደሚያስረዳው ተከሳሹ ሚያዚያ 7 ቀን 2014 ዓ.ም ከምሽቱ በግምት 12፡30–3፡00 ሰዓት ባለው ሰዓት በአዲስ አበባ ከተማ ኮልፌ ቀራኒዮ ክ/ከተማ ወረዳ 04 ክልል ልዩ ቦታው ደብረ-አባይ ኢንዱስትሪ መንደር ተብሎ ከሚጠራው አካባቢ ዕድሜዋ 5 ዓመት የሆናትን የግል ተበዳይ እጇን ይዟት ወደ ታጠረ ባዶ ቦታ በመውሰድ መሬት ላይ በጀርባዋ አስተኝቶ ድርጊቱን ፈፅሟል።
ይህን ተከትሎም በፍትህ ሚኒስቴር ጠቅላይ ዐቃቤ ህግ ዘርፍ የኮልፌ ቀራኒዮ ምድብ ዐቃቤ ህግ በፈፀመው በህፃናት ሴቶች ላይ የሚፈፀም የግብረ-ስጋ ድፍረት በደል ወንጀል ክስ ተመስርቶበታል።
በፌደራል የመጀመሪያ ደረጃ ፍርድ ቤት ኮልፌ ቀራኒዮ ምድብ ሴቶችና ህፃናት የወንጀል ችሎት የቀረበው ተከሳሽ ወልደሚካኤል አሚጋ የተከሰሰበት ክስ በችሎት ተነቦለት የወንጀል ድርጊቱን አልፈፀምኩም በማለት ክዶ ተከራክሯል።
አቃቤ ህግም 4 የሰው ምስክሮችን አቅርቦ በማሰማት ተከሳሹ ድርጊቱን ስለመፈጸሙ በበቂ ሁኔታ አስረድቷል። በዐቃቤ ህግ በቀረበበት ክስ እና ማስረጃ መሰረት የጥፋተኝነት ፍርድ ተላልፎበቴ።
ፍ/ቤቱም ተከሳሽ ወልደሚካኤል አሚጋን በ14 ዓመት ፅኑ እስራት እንዲቀጣ እንደወሰነበት ከፍትህ ሚኒስቴር ያገኘነው መረጃ ያሳያል።

ሰላም ግዜው የ23 አመት ወጣት ስትሆን በፋርማሲ የት/ት ዘርፍ ዲፕሎማ አላት፡፡ ሰላም የምትኖረው በአማራ ክልል ምስ/ጎጃም ዞን ቀራኒዩ ከተማ ሲሆን ይኸነው ፈንታ የተባለ ግለሰብ ተደጋጋሚ የፍቅር ጥያቄ ያቀርብላት የነበረ ሲሆን ይህንንም እሷ እንደማትቀበለው ስትገልፅለት ቆይታለች፡፡
ይኽን ተከትሎም ታህሳስ 18 ቀን 2014 ዓ.ም ከቀኑ 11፡00 ሰዓት ላይ በስራ ቦታዋ ሳለች ነበር ግለሰቡ ምንነቱ ያልታወቀ አሲድ ከቤንዚን ጋር በመቀላቀል ሰውነቷ ላይ በመድፋት ከባድ የአሲድ ቃጠሎ ጉዳት ያደረሰባት፡፡ የኢትዮጵያ የህግ ባለሞያ ሴቶች ማህበር ባ/ዳር ቅርንጫፍ ጽ/ቤት ጉዳዩን እየተከታተለዉ የሚገኝ ሲሆን ጉዳዩ የቀረበበት የወረዳው ፍ/ቤት የካቲት 15 ቀን 2014 ዓ.ም በዋለዉ ችሎት ይኸነው ፈንታ በ14 አመት ፅኑ እስራት እንዲቀጣ ዉሳኔ አስተላልፏል፡፡
ሰላም የተሻለ ህክምን ለማግኘት ወደ አዲስ አበባ በመምጣት ሆስፒታል ዉስጥ ህክምና እየተደረገላት ይገኛል፡፡ ማህበራችን ባህር ዳር በሚገኘዉ ቅርንጫፍ ጽ/ቤቱ አማካኝነት የህግ ጉዳዩን ከመከታተሉ ጎን ለጎን የዋናዉ ጽ/ቤታችን የህግ ድጋፍ ክፍል እና የህዝብ ግንኙነት ክፍል ተወካዮች ሰላም ህክምና በምትከታተልበት ሆስፒታል ተገኝተዉ ያለችበትን ሁኔታ ማየት ችለዋል፡፡ በዚህ መመሰረት የህክምና ሂደቷን ጨምሮ በቀጣይ የሚያስፈልጉ የስነ-ልቦና ክትትሎችን እንድታገኝ ለማስቻል የሚመለከታቸዉን ተቋማት በማነጋገር ላይ እንገኛለን፡፡ በዚህ አጋጣሚም ሰላምን በተለያየ መንገድ ማገዝ ወይም መደገፍ የምትፈልጉ ተቋማትም ሆነ ግለሰቦች በዉስጥ መስመር ብታሳዉቁን ሁኔታዎችን የምናመቻች መሆኑን እንገልፃለን፡፡
የኢትዮጵያ የህግ ባለሙያ ሴቶች ማህበር
በየ11 ደቂቃው አንድ ሴት በፍቅር አጋሯ ወይም የቤተሰብ አባል በሆነ ዘመድ እንደምትገደል ተገለፀ።
የተባበሩት መንግሥታት ዋና ፀሐፊ አንቶኒዮ ጉቴሬዝ እንደገለፁት በየ11 ደቂቃው አንድ ሴት በፍቅር አጋሯ ወይም የቤተሰብ አባል በሆነ ዘመድ ትገደላለች።
በመላው ዓለም ከሦስት ሴቶች አንዷ ጥቃት ደርሶባት እንደሚያውቅ እና ከሁሉ የከፋው ደግሞ በአብዛኛው ግድያው የሚፈጸመው ሴቶች "እጅግ ደኅንነቱ የተጠበቀ ነው" ብለው በሚያምኑት መኖሪያ ቤታቸው ውስጥ ነውም ብለዋል።
በየዓመቱ በሚካሄደው ሴቶች ባሉበት ሁኔታ ዙሪያ (Status of Women) በተደረገው የምክክር መድረክ ላይ ጉቴሬዝ ባደረጉት ንግግር፣ ሴቶች ላይ የሚደርስ ጥቃት "የዓለም ረዥሙና አሳሳቢው ወረርሽኝ" ነው ብለዋል።
ጥቃትን ለመግታት የመጀመሪያው እርምጃ የወንዶችን ልብ እና አእምሮ መለወጥ ነው። ችግሩን የፈጠሩት ወንዶች ናቸው። ችግሩን ማቆም የሚችሉትም ወንዶች ናቸው" ብለዋል ዋና ፀሐፊው።
ጾታዊ ጥቃትን ለመግታት የተባበሩት መንግሥታት እስካሁን ድረስ 880,000 ወንዶችን ጤናማ ስለሆነ ወንድነት (positive masculinity) አስተምሯል።
የድርጅቱ አባል አገራት ጾታዊ ጥቃትን ለማቆም የአስቸኳይ ጊዜ ዕቅድ እንዲነድፉ ዋና ፀሐፊው ጉቴሬዝ አሳስበዋል። የተባበሩት መንግሥታት የሥነ ሕዝብ ፈንድ (ዩኤንኤፍፒኤ) እና 'ኢኳሊቲ ናው' እንዳሉት አፍሪካ ጾታዊ ጥቃትን በመዋጋት መሻሻል ያሳየች አህጉር ናት።
የተባበሩት መንግሥታት ያወጣው ሪፖርት 'ስፖትላይት' በተባለ ፕሮግራም11 የአፍሪካ አገሮችን ይዳስሳል። ከ11ዱ አገራት ሰባቱ ማለትም ኢትዮጵያ፣ ኬንያ፣ ታንዛንያ፣ ኡጋንዳ፣ ቡርኪና ፋሶ፣ ጋያና እና ሴኔጋል ግርዛትን በሕግ ከልክለው ለአተገባበሩ በጀት መድበዋል። (BBC)

Portrayed by actress Janelle Monáe, Jackson began her journey at NASA in 1951 when she joined the West Computers under the supervision of Vaughan. Just two years later, Jackson received an opportunity to pursue her true passion of engineering.
While learning from engineer Kazimierz Czarnecki, he suggested that Jackson join a training program to become an engineer, but to do so, Jackson would have to petition the court to enroll in the courses needed at the previously segregated Hampton High School. She succeeded and went on to become the first black female engineer in 1958, another first for NASA.
Of the three, Johnson, played by actress Taraji P. Henson, is most recognized for her remarkable contributions to NASA, specifically the use of her calculations in John Glenn’s 1962 orbital mission, which the plot of “Hidden Figures” is centered around.
She was vital to several other monumental projects, including her calculations that helped synchronize Project Apollo’s Lunar Module with the lunar-orbiting Command and Service Module. Former President Barack Obama awarded Johnson the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015
All of these women, including the unnamed women from the West Area Computing Group, not only provided key resources to NASA, allowing for national advancement in space exploration but did so while having to fight for human rights.

The role of women in Ethiopian military history was thriving at a time where the world was more comfortable relegating household chores to women, yet remains largely untold.
Female heroines in Ethiopia have impacted the course of history as Queens, military strategists, combatants, and even spies – and have deterred foreign aggression for thousands of years, leaving behind an independent nation to us.
No one was left behind in the mobilization efforts of and during the battle of Adwa in 1896. Women served as civilian participants and military combatants, and equally claimed rights, titles, honors for their valor. Inheritance and ownership over land, previously unthinkable for women, was another right granted to those who have served in the military – contributing to a mindset shift of what women were denied due to illogical biases that no longer serve the community.

Dr. Sunitha Krishnan was a social worker since childhood. She would teach dance to mentally challenged children when she herself was just eight years old. She was gang-raped when she was 12. The horrific incident left her angry, but instead of lamenting over her fate, she started an anti-trafficking organization Prajwala which works with the police and other law enforcement agencies to fight commercial sexual exploitation. Through her organization, she is actively rescuing and rehabilitating victims of sex-trafficking into society. Krishnan was also recently awarded the prestigious 2014 Nelson Mandela- Graca Machel Innovation Awards on November 24 at Johannesburg, South Africa. She is the first Indian to receive this honour. Her inspiring story is a motivation to all of us, especially those who are still fighting the horrific memories of rape.
