Rav Miller's Answer:
Moshe Rabbeinu did not sign up to be a kindergarten teacher. The Am Yisroel he led was a nation of "great spirits." They were the most independent-minded people in history, and that specific generation was the most independent of all.
There is a fundamental principle of the Torah hidden here. After the Giving of the Torah, when the Jews were building the Mishkan, the Tabernacle, the text repeats a "queer" phrase over and over: "Ka’asher tzivu Hashem es Moshe"—"As G-d commanded Moshe." The Gemara asks why this is repeated so many times? and it answers; "L’hagid shevacham"—to praise them.
But what is the praise? If G-d commanded it, what else were they supposed to do? Why do they need a separate pat on the back for every detail?
The answer lies in the nature of "Na’aseh v’Nishma", that the Jews said; ''We will do and we will listen!''. Today, we think those words are easy to say. But they were first uttered by a nation with "stiff backbones." From the days of Noach until Moshe, there was no such thing as a written "Na’aseh v’Nishma." Instead, it was "Ish kol hayashar b’einav"—every man did what he thought was right.
In those days, Hakadosh Baruch Hu required every individual to serve Him using their own seichel, solely by their own intellect.
They were even punished for things they weren't explicitly told not to do. For example, Er and Onan were punished for a sin that isn't explicitly forbidden in the text.
Rabbeinu Nissim Gaon asks: How can you punish someone for a law they weren't given?
He answers that anything accessible to our own understanding, we are obligated to obey.
This is "uncommon sense"—the sense of the Kadmonim, the ancients. They were expected to understand through logic alone that life is a gift from G-d for a specific purpose and should not be wasted. They were punished for disobeying their own common sensical thinking rational minds!
This was the tradition for generations. When Yaakov Avinu studied in the Academy of Shem v'Ever for fourteen years, they didn't have a Shulchan Aruch, halachic code written down, or a printed Talmud.
They studied the "Talmud of the Mind." They delved into the seichel of the Torah.
The Gemara itself asks, "Lama li kra, sevara?"—"Why do I need a verse if I have logic?" This teaches us that pure logic is actually more fundamental than a written verse.
Of course, our sevaros, the logical deductions, today are "rotten." They are smashed to pieces by the false ideas we pick up from the stupid street, the fake main stream media, and propaganda partisan dumb newspapers & journals.
But in the days of old, when human logic was unsullied and strong, from Trumpist Maga cultists Zionism etc. - people still lived by their own intellect.
Then, suddenly, at Matan Torah, they were told: "You must surrender your logic. From now on, it is Toras Hashem. It is Al pi Hashem, that our intellect our common sense our brain our mind our thinking etc. must take a back seat to the word of the mouth of G-d!"
To take a nation of fiercely independent thinkers—people who had lived for centuries by their own high-level reasoning—and get them to follow every minute detail "as Hashem commanded Moshe" was a staggering achievement.
Their "opposition" to Moshe wasn't pettiness; it was the friction of a nation of giants learning to subordinate their great minds to the Will of G-d.
