For nearly two decades, the Columbus Fountain in front of Washington’s Union Station was nonfunctional. Now, water is flowing again after 19 years.

Department of Interior Secretary Doug Burgum took to social media on Thursday to announce the fountain's reopening.

The 15-feet tall monument at the center of the fountain was erected and dedicated in 1912 and commemorates Christopher Columbus' 1492 voyage.

According to D.C. Historic Sites, the fountain stopped working in 2007 and was never repaired until now.

🇸🇦🤝🇮🇷 Iranian opposition/monarchist news outlet, Iran International, based in London, received a 650 million pound Sterling bailout from a Saudi investment fund

The company that owns UK-based broadcaster Iran International received £650mn of debt relief from its shareholders, strengthening the balance sheet of the prominent platform for anti-regime voices.

The previously unreported debt-for-equity swap in December shored up the finances of the network, which claims to be the most watched Persian news channel and has burnt through hundreds of millions of pounds since it was founded with backing from British-Saudi investors in 2017.

It came shortly before mass protests erupted across Iran, marking the start of a turbulent period in which the regime killed thousands of demonstrators in a brutal crackdown. Weeks later the US and Israel launched a war on Iran, assassinating its longtime supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran International — which employs about 700 people globally — broadcasts into Iran from London through satellite, radio and a massive social media following. Critics accuse it of pushing a pro-war narrative and using its reach to promote Reza Pahlavi, the US-based son of the last shah.

The network has not disclosed the source of its funding, a decision that has long unsettled some of its journalists, who have privately raised concerns about its editorial decisions, said a person with direct knowledge of its operations.

Iran International’s parent company, Volant Media UK, has lost more than £410mn in the past five years and it owed related entities about £482mn, according to its last set of accounts covering the financial year ending December 2024. Volant also runs a separate network called Afghanistan International.

Volant says it is editorially independent, has never received state funding from Saudi Arabia, Israel or elsewhere, and is backed by a consortium of private, commercial investors. It declined to comment on their identity.

Filings for Volant in the UK’s corporate registry show that an allotment of 648mn shares, valued at £648mn, was issued on December 13.

A separate confirmation statement shows that on the same date all of Volant’s original 50,000 shares were transferred from the British-Saudi film executive Adel Abdulkarim Alabdulkarim, who serves as Volant’s company director and secretary, to offshore company Info-Cast Cayman Limited.

The sole director of Info-Cast Cayman is Saleh Hussain Aldowais, according to Cayman corporate records consulted this month. A person with that name is the chief operations officer of state-backed Saudi Research and Media Group, the kingdom’s biggest media organisation. SRMG did not respond to requests for comment.

🚂 🇺🇸 💵 Duffy announces $465M grant for Union Station repairs

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy on Thursday said the Trump administration would use a more than $400 million grant to upgrade Washington Union Station after restoring federal control of the facility last year.

“In our effort to follow the president’s call to make D.C. beautiful and great again, we are announcing that we are giving a grant from DOT to Union Station for $465 million,” Duffy said during a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the official reopening of Columbus Circle in Washington.

Other enhancements will include a push to “maximize the station’s revenue potential” with an overhaul of its retail, parking, and office spaces to include digital signage and other modernization projects.

More than 37 million people pass through Washington Union Station annually, making it one of the busiest intercity and commuter rail stations for national, regional and local train service, according to Amtrak.

Perhaps that idea inspired his declaration last week that he “will not rest until the people of Cuba once again have the freedom their forefathers fought so valiantly to establish over 100 years ago,” when the island achieved its independence from Spain.

Mr. Trump’s motive is not solely altruistic. He also said, “America will not tolerate a rogue state harboring hostile foreign military, intelligence and terror operations just 90 miles from the American homeland.”

The president is referring to his January executive order that noted “Cuba hosts Russia’s largest overseas signals intelligence facility,” “continues to build deep intelligence and defense cooperation” with China and “welcomes transnational terrorist groups, such as Hezbollah and Hamas,” proxies of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Mr. Maduro employed Cuban bodyguards — more than 30 of whom were reportedly killed by the U.S. forces who broke into his palatial residence in Caracas on the morning of Jan. 3 and arrested him.

Delcy Rodriguez, the Maduro deputy left in power, has been receptive to Mr. Trump’s pressure — including his demand that Venezuela provide no more oil or other support to Havana.

Earlier this month, CIA Director John Ratcliffe went to Havana to deliver a message from Mr. Trump. The United States, he said, would be willing to engage with Cuba on economic matters, including $100 million in humanitarian aid. But those funds would have to be delivered through non-regime channels — and Havana would be required to implement fundamental changes.

Applying additional pressure, acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche last week announced the unsealed indictment of Raul Castro, charging the 94-year-old brother of Fidel Castro and his direct successor with authorizing the 1996 downing of two unarmed civilian aircraft, killing four unarmed Cuban-American civilian pilots who were flying over international waters to rescue Cubans fleeing the island.

Will the combination of legal accountability, economic leverage and demand for fundamental change bring an end to 67 years of Fidelismo? It’s possible.

Over the past two months, Mr. Thiel has met with the country’s president, Javier Milei, and his ministers; purchased a mansion in one of Buenos Aires’ most exclusive neighborhoods; and hosted a dinner with local economists where he discussed the Antichrist, one of his favorite conversation topics, according to Argentine officials and people familiar with Mr. Thiel’s activities.

Mr. Thiel, who has a history of collecting backup countries as he hedges his bets against the United States, is considering making Argentina another Plan B, according to two people familiar with his thinking. Born in Germany and raised in the United States, he received citizenship in New Zealand in 2011, and applied for a passport in Malta in 2022.

Underscoring his belief in the country, Mr. Thiel, 58, has temporarily relocated his family to Argentina and enrolled his children in a local school, two of the people said. The Argentine government has also explored offering the billionaire permanent residence or even citizenship, a person familiar with Mr. Thiel’s plans said, though it’s currently unclear whether he would accept.

A spokesman for Mr. Milei denied such an offer had been considered. The Argentine government is currently working to establish a “golden passport” program that would allow people who make large investments in the country to obtain citizenship.

“All billionaires of the world who want to flee countries increasingly regulated, with higher taxes and governments that persecute their citizens, are welcome in the Argentine republic, the new land of freedom,” Manuel Adorni, Mr. Milei’s cabinet chief, said last month before congress, answering a question about Mr. Thiel.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that it will take “months and years . . . depending on the weapon system” to replenish U.S. inventories. CSIS analysis supports the secretary’s assessment. Table 1 shows replacement times for seven key munitions heavily used during the Iran War that would also be needed for a Western Pacific war. Under the current delivery projections:

Land Attack Missile (TLAM), Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), and Patriot—heavily used in this war—will take three or more years from today to return to prewar inventory levels.
Standard Missiles (SM-3 and SM-6) will take around two years. These naval missiles were not used as heavily.

Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM) and Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) will take several months to a year to replace. The prewar PrSM inventory was low because the system had just begun production. JASSM, though heavily used, will see large deliveries from recent procurements.

Campaigns against Iran and its proxies—and, for Patriot interceptors, aid to Ukraine—have made the problem more acute. Alongside replenishing its own stocks, the United States also has to fulfill orders from allies and partners. Decisions on how to allocate new production have already created bilateral friction, and this friction will continue for the next few years as demand outpaces supply.
