🇸🇾🛢 ConocoPhillips set to sign deal with Syria to revive gas production

ConocoPhillips is set to become the first US oil and gas major to sign a contract with Syria’s new government, as it works to revive an economy battered by war and economic sanctions.

In a deal with the state-owned Syrian Petroleum Company, ConocoPhillips and Novaterra Energy will develop existing gasfields and hunt for new ones, building on a memorandum of understanding signed in November.

The deal was expected to be signed this week, according to two people familiar with the matter.

Last year, the Syrian government said the potential deal would lift gas output by between 4mn and 5mn cubic metres per day within a year, a significant increase for the country. Gas production has fallen by two-thirds from its prewar high of 30mn cubic metres per day in 2011.

The ConocoPhillips contract comes after US oil and gas company HKN Energy began operating at the Rmeilan oilfields in north-east Syria, following its finalisation of a 25-year upstream contract with Damascus to take over the field. In April, the SPC signed another contract with Saudi Arabia’s ADES Holding Company to develop gasfields.

Experts estimate that Syria needs about 18mn cubic metres of gas to power its grid every day. The country, currently dependent on imports from Azerbaijan and Qatar, suffers from rolling blackouts, although recent improvements have seen electricity availability rise from roughly two hours daily to about 13. 

Syria’s oil and gas reserves are modest by regional standards but for the bankrupt state they present a crucial potential source of revenue.

🇺🇸🇮🇷⚡️ — A Reuters investigation found that the U.S. military quietly oversaw a large offshore ship-to-ship oil transfer network since early May to keep Gulf energy exports flowing despite Iran’s disruption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

More than 90 ships have participated, transferring an estimated 90 million barrels of oil and petroleum products at sites near Fujairah in the UAE and Sohar in Oman. The operation used techniques similar to Iran’s sanctions-evasion methods, including ships traveling with AIS transponders turned off, dimmed lights, and tightly controlled convoy movements monitored by drones, helicopters, and surveillance assets.

Tankers carried oil through the Strait before transferring cargo to waiting VLCCs, with each transfer taking 24–40 hours. U.S. military support included aerial monitoring, security oversight, and compliance screening.

Major Gulf exporters, including the UAE’s ADNOC and Kuwait Oil Tanker Company, were among the participants.

An Apache helicopter shot down by Iran on June 9 was reportedly involved in the broader mission, though its exact role remains unclear. The operation involved companies approved through a U.S. Navy review process in Bahrain, requiring disclosure of ownership, cargo details, and tracking histories.

🇸🇪 Sweden passes 'good behaviour' law to kick out misbehaving immigrants

Sweden's parliament passed a law on Monday allowing authorities to revoke immigrants' residency permits based on bad behaviour, ​such as having unpaid debts, doing undeclared work or ‌links to extremist organisations.

The law, which covers pending permits but also retroactively already granted permits, is part of a wider tightening of immigration ​rules by the right-wing government and its support party, ​the nationalist Sweden Democrats, ahead of a parliamentary election ⁠in September.

The law has been criticised by the opposition and ​human rights advocacy groups as arbitrary because decisions would be taken ​on behaviour that has not been deemed criminal.

The law does ​not specify what ​types of behaviours ⁠are deemed unacceptable but the government has mentioned unpaid debts, not paying taxes, criminality and ​links to extremist organisations. The Migration Agency is ​tasked with ⁠reviewing the permits and the decisions can be appealed to a migration court.

🇬🇧 To clear up any confusion:

There are TWO bans on under 16's access to social media in the UK. The first is at the app level and this comes into play next year. It will require selected social media apps to prompt for age verification when accessing them.

The second more insidious one is happening much sooner. This one is the 'nudity detection' feature and this one operates on device level. It will require every adult to show a form of ID in order to operate their phones and tablets without restrictions/monitoring.

The voluntary deadlines to tech companies to implement this is around early September this year.

If Apple, Google and others don’t implement device-level monitoring by then, the government has said it will bring forward legislation to make it mandatory.

People saying "Just use a VPN!" are not understanding how this works.

There is also a possibility that if they get their way with minimal pushback, the OS level ID requirement could eventually expand to include laptops and PCs.

It would be more complicated and take longer to implement, but it's not impossible.
