🇰🇵 🇷🇺 🇺🇦 “A North Korean missile unit has begun deploying to western Russia and could be equipped with 120 ballistic missiles and six launchers for strikes against Ukraine, an official at Ukraine's military intelligence agency said…

Andrii Cherniak of Ukraine's Main Directorate of Intelligence said Russia planned to base the missile unit of around 90 North Korean personnel in the western Russian region of Voronezh, within its 112th Missile Brigade.

Pyongyang has already sent a new batch of 40 KN-23 and KN-24 missiles and personnel to Russia, but the configuration of the deployment and total number of missiles will be finalised at top-level talks next month, he said.

Russia expects the deployment to involve 120 North Korean ballistic missiles and six launchers, he said.”

📝 Woofers: "Beyond North Korea’s greater involvement in this war, this poses a significant threat to South Korea as the North Koreans gain a wealth of real world experience as well as weapons data that they can use to refine their systems. Already, previous experiences were used to dramatically improve the CEP on these missiles from one which missed cities entirely and regularly failed in flight to weapons which can now hit within a few dozen meters.

This is one of Pyongyang’s most dangerous weapons systems and a priority target in the event of a conflict. Now the North Koreans are going to gain further experience conducting strikes while being actively hunted in even more difficult terrain than would be found in Korea.

Yet still, Seoul does not give this the attention it needs."

🇸🇴🇸🇴⚡️ — Heavy fighting erupted in the town of Gaalkacyo in the Puntland region following an offensive by Puntland regional forces against a base belonging to the Mogadishu-aligned PSF.

Puntland forces eventually captured the base and captured hundreds of pro-federal forces, including high-ranking officers and a large amount of weapons.

Tension between the Somali federal government and his federal subjects is at an all-time high following failure by Mogadishu to reestablish its authority in Puntland.

🇺🇸☢️ The Pentagon is drafting a new U.S. nuclear strategy that emphasizes the possible use of shorter-range tactical weapons in case of a regional war with either China or Russia, according to sources speaking to NBC. Accordingly, the strategy informs nuclear options for the President in cases of crises.

📝 Anon: A big reason the U.S. was so gung-ho on tactical nukes for most of the Cold War was because we realized we could not win a conventional conflict. Very telling we are going back to this doctrine.

🇪🇺🇭🇺🇷🇴🇷🇸 Drought grips Central Europe, disrupting nuclear power, shipping and agriculture

Europe's worst drought in decades is rippling through the continent's transport, energy and agricultural sectors, bringing shipping on parts of the Danube to a standstill, threatening nuclear power generation and exposing growing vulnerabilities as climate change pushes temperatures to unprecedented levels.

The immediate crisis is centred on the Danube, where record-low water levels have forced partial closures of nuclear power plants in Hungary and Romania, while severely disrupting one of Europe's most important inland shipping routes, with knock-on effects stretching from Germany to the Black Sea.

Hungary has activated a three-tier contingency plan to maintain electricity supplies after warning that the Paks nuclear power plant could be forced to close completely within days because there is insufficient water in the Danube to cool its reactors. Paks, which has four reactors with a combined capacity of around 2 GW, normally supplies almost half of Hungary's electricity consumption during peak summer periods.

The Paks nuclear power plant could be completely shut down for the first time in its 42-year history within the next two to three days, Prime Minister Peter Magyar. State utility MVM later confirmed the announcement, saying the shutdown, which does not constitute a nuclear safety emergency, would be carried out gradually and in accordance with nuclear safety protocols. The cooling of the plant while offline is guaranteed, it added.

The crisis has been driven by exceptionally low water levels on the Danube. At Paks, the river had fallen to a historic low, around 24 cm below the previous record set in 2018, creating an unprecedented operational challenge for both the nuclear station and Hungary's electricity system. Water levels are expected to decline further as another heatwave develops over the region, making a restart unlikely in the short term.

Hungary is not alone. At Romania’s Cernavodă nuclear power plant, Unit 1 was taken offline on July 28 because of the low flow of the Danube, leaving only one reactor generating electricity. Together, the two units normally provide around 20% of Romania's electricity demand during the summer. The company warned that the second reactor could still be shut down at any time if river conditions deteriorate further.

Romania's state nuclear operator Nuclearelectrica (BVB: SNN) said it managed to keep the remaining reactor operating after overnight monitoring showed stable conditions, delaying what could otherwise have become a complete shutdown.

Further upstream, Bulgaria's Kozloduy nuclear power plant has so far remained operational despite the drought. The station's location and engineering have helped shield it from the worst effects of the falling river. Its pumping station was designed with 34 high-capacity pumps capable of drawing water through deep suction channels even during exceptionally low river levels, allowing both reactors to continue operating.

In Central and Southeast Europe, the consequences have already extended well beyond the electricity sector. The Danube, Europe's second-longest river and one of its most important inland transport corridors, has become increasingly difficult to navigate as water levels continue to fall to historic lows across much of Central and Southeast Europe.

Much of Hungary's wheat, maize and oilseed harvest is transported by barge downriver before being loaded onto ocean-going vessels for export to international markets. However, with river depths falling below navigable levels in several sections, barges are operating at only a fraction of their normal capacity. Industry estimates suggest grain vessels are carrying 20-40% less cargo than usual, while some barges have been forced to reduce loads to just 10-20% of capacity, sharply increasing transport costs because more voyages are needed to move the same volume of freight.

🇷🇺⚔️🇺🇦 The closure of the Greater Odesa seaports has halted Ukrainian iron ore exports, cutting off billions of dollars in annual revenue and threatening the financial stability of the country's steel sector…

While agricultural losses from the port blockade are widely documented, the shipping freeze has also crippled Ukrainian steelmakers who rely on maritime routes to export most of their iron ore and finished products…

Viktor Lotous, board chair of the Poltava Mining and Processing Plant – a Ferrexpo subsidiary – announced that the company plans to suspend operations at the facility starting Aug. 3 due to a working capital deficit and the halt of maritime exports.

The Southern Mining and Processing Plant in Kryvyi Rih – a joint venture between Metinvest and other shareholders – also announced a total production halt…

Extraction at Metinvest's Combined Mining and Processing Plant ‘is projected to drop roughly 30% as early as August compared to the 2025 annual average due to these same logistical disruptions.’

🇷🇺⚔️🇺🇦 The Ukrainian General Staff reports that Russia launched a record 8,300+ glide-bombs during July - an average of 268 per day.

If kept up at a monthly rate, Russia would be launching 100,000 glide-bombs per year.

Let's say, hypothetically, that each of these glide-bombs kills one Ukrainian soldier and injures 2 others on average, which would be the bare minimum for such large munitions. That would be an average of 804 casualties per day, or 293,000 per year - just from glide-bombs. You can see that the casualties add up very quickly.

🇺🇸🚫🚀 U.S. military depletes key missile interceptor stockpiles during Iran war.

The U.S. military has used nearly 80% of its THAAD interceptor inventory and about 50% of its Patriot interceptors since the start of the war with Iran, according to two sources familiar with the latest inventory assessment who spoke to CNN.

Before the conflict, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimated the U.S. possessed roughly 452 THAAD interceptors and 2,200 Patriot interceptors (across the two most modern variants).

Based on those figures, the remaining inventory is estimated at about 90 THAAD interceptors and around 1,100 Patriot interceptors.

🇧🇪🇷🇺 Belgium imported only Russian LNG in July

Belgium imported all of its LNG from Russia in July as European and Asian countries compete for scarce supplies of the super-chilled fuel amid the Middle East conflict.
Faced with high LNG prices, many European countries chose in July to reduce imports and let gas stockpiles dip. Belgium’s imports of the super-chilled fuel plummeted by over 40% in July. Meanwhile, Germany’s gas storage facilities have fallen to 47%, while France’s are at 56%.

Belgium was Europe’s fifth largest importer of LNG in 2025. However, in July, Brussels purchased just 0.4 mn tonnes of LNG, all of it from Russia, according to ship-tracking data Bloomberg compiled. Belgium also imported pipeline gas from Norway and the UK in July.

The imports from Russia come despite the European Union’s ban coming into effect on April 25 prohibiting members from purchasing short-term and spot market Russian LNG. EU utilities also purchased their highest monthly total of Russian LNG in the month prior to the ban.

A full ban on all Russian LNG, including long-term contracts comes into force for the EU on January 1, 2027.

Even before the Middle East conflict flared up, Europe was having a difficult time laying off Russian LNG. Europe bought every single LNG cargo produced by Russia’s Yamal LNG plant in February.

And in January, Europe’s dependence on LNG from the US and Russia soared to an all-time, with the two countries supplying over 80% of the continent’s total seaborne imports.

Currently, the EU maintains that it will enforce its complete ban on Russian LNG beginning in January.

However, in late July, the EU granted Greek shipping line Dynagas the right to continue transporting Russian LNG in a major compromise with Athens.

In order to approve its 21st sanctions package against Russia, Brussels needed to allow Dynagas to continue shipping Russian LNG cargoes to third countries. The deal runs for 12-months and could be renewed.

Although, the bloc did impose a limit on volumes, capping it at 2025 levels with Greece also promising to extend the price cap on Russian oil for one year to $44.10 a barrel, well below market rates.

🇺🇸🗳 Joe Kent says he, Tucker Carlson, Marjorie Taylor Greene and Thomas Massie are hoping to build a new political movement or third party built around opposition to U.S. wars, AIPAC, and corporate money, with the initial goal of fielding a candidate for the 2028 presidential campaign.

In an interview with Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks, Kent said the group met at Carlson’s home in Maine after concluding that both major parties repeatedly deliver “another war in the Middle East” regardless of how Americans vote.

Kent said they may follow the 2028 presidential run with down-ballot races, and acknowledged ballot-access hurdles may force them to run an insurgent candidate through an existing party instead.

“We don’t want Israel dictating our foreign policy. We don’t want any more foreign wars. We don’t want to have to run a massive empire,” he said.

Kent said the group has urged Carlson to run but he has repeatedly declined. They will seek to finance the effort through grassroots donations rather than corporate PACs. “The second you start taking the corporate PAC money… you’re not truly in charge anyways.”

On JD Vance, Kent said he still personally likes him but called him “a captive of the two-party system” who will struggle to ask voters to trust him in 2028 after defending Trump’s war.

🇦🇪🤝🇸🇩 How the UAE stole Sudan's gold

The UAE's imperial push into Africa – FT

"It was one of the largest gold heists in world history, executed in the opening salvos of Sudan’s civil war in April 2023.

As paramilitary forces battled their former allies from the Sudan military, they seized the state-owned gold refinery in Khartoum and broke into the central bank.

At least 1.5 tonnes of bullion worth $100mn at that time was stolen, together with jewellery raided from safe-deposit boxes at commercial banks.

A witness, whose version of events was corroborated by three other people familiar with the operation, says the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces transported the gold across borders, including to neighbouring Chad and South Sudan. The RSF denies involvement and the details of the theft are contested.

But where much of the gold went next is no mystery: from the international airport in South Sudan’s capital, it was loaded on to planes destined for the UAE"
