The fortification of West African territory has few modern precedents, but it has deep historical ones. In the precolonial era, cities, villages, and individual house clusters defended themselves with earthen walls and mountain refuges against raiding and political fragmentation.

As security forces feel increasingly vulnerable, trenches are dug as a last attempt to hold the line. When the trenches fail, the military retreats and the town is overrun by the insurgents.

🇸🇦🇮🇶🇾🇪 - In a bizarre turn of events today, Saudi Arabia claimed that the drones were launched by Iraqi militias towards the Kingdom's eastern airspace and stated that all of them had been intercepted. However, it later emerged that the facility's processing section had sustained significant damage. Ansarullah also announced an operation on Saudi's Yanbu region, western Saudi Arabia, on the other side of the country. There were no reports of drone sightings, impacts or air defense activity in Yanbu.

Reports subsequently surfaced of an apparent meeting between Ansarullah and Iraqi militia groups two days ago in central Iraq, suggesting possible coordination between the two. The Babil Province had frequently been used by pro al-Houthi forces for staging important meetings. A U.S. drone was downed in the Babil region just hours ago. Iraqi-based factions have since denied any involvement in the attack on Saudi Arabia's Abqaiq refinery.

Note, Saudi Arabia has in the past covered offensive operations and attacks on its own territory in similar manner. For instance, just last week, Riyadh struck Ansarullah-controlled Sana'a International Airport. To avoid direct responsibility, it attributed the "successful operation" to Yemen's Aden-based Presidential Leadership Council.

🇱🇾 - Massive protests erupted last night in Tripoli, Misrata, and nearby towns of the Government of National Unity, GNU, controlled western Libya.

The protests initially began as a youth movement, known as the Sons of Sough al-Jumah (Friday Market - a district of Tripoli), but escalated into calling for the downfall of the Prime Minister of western Libya, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh.

Protestors stormed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building, Mellitah oil facilities, administrative buildings of multiple different towns, and the Ministry of Youth building. Protestors also set up multiple roadblocks across Misrata and Tripoli.

Local armed group leaders were also present in the anti-Dbeibeh protests.

🏝 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 California family left in a pool of blood after horrific 'anti-white' attack at exclusive Hawaii resort

The family, who has not been named, believes they were singled out because they are white and is urging investigators to pursue the case as a hate crime.

Police have not classified the assault as a hate crime.

Family member Joseph Headfield said the violence was preceded by racial threats from a woman he described as the group’s ringleader.

“There were three females, one of which was the ringleader,” Headfield told Hawaii News Now. “She got up in people’s faces, said, ‘We’re going to beat up your boys tonight. We’re going to beat up the haole boys.'”

“Haole” is a Hawaiian term for a person who is not of Native Hawaiian or Polynesian descent and is commonly used to describe white people or non-locals.

Headfield said the attack quickly spiraled, with members of the group allegedly using patio furniture as weapons. “The kids were beating people with the chairs.”

One of the family’s relatives was struck in the head with a chair while trying to protect other family members and later needed 13 staples to close the wound.

Relatives told HNN the confrontation was the culmination of an evening of escalating tensions, alleging a group of Maui youths had been harassing visitors earlier near Whalers Village before the violence erupted at the resort.

Police arrested a 20-year-old Makawao man on suspicion of assault.

He was later released as detectives continued their investigation.

The oceanfront Kaanapali Alii, known for its luxury condominium rentals, said it is cooperating with investigators.

📝 🇸🇴 🇸🇴 Pro-Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and Puntland state forces clashed amid a standoff between the two sides in northern Somalia’s Puntland state, a dispute that is part of a broader political crisis between the FGS and the leading national opposition coalition.

A prolonged political crisis could distract from US-backed counterterrorism efforts against al Qaeda and Islamic State affiliates in Somalia.

Puntland state forces routed an FGS-backed Puntland Security Force (PSF) convoy near Laag—located 20 miles south of Bosaso, Puntland’s main port city—on July 20.

The Puntland state government has opposed the FGS’s attempt to co-opt security forces in Puntland, which initiated the standoff in mid-June 2026.

The FGS unilaterally appointed a new Somali military commander for Puntland and further subsumed the PSF into the federal security forces.

The clashes underscore the risk of further clashes between the FGS and members of the leading national opposition coalition.

Puntland and other members of the Somali Future Council (SFC) coalition have opposed the FGS’s extension of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s term and implementation of direct elections, leading to the FGS cracking down on uncooperative federal member states and the SFC in Mogadishu.

The most recent round of internationally mediated talks to resolve the nationwide crisis on July 20 reportedly stalled again due to SFC objections over FGS influence in state elections.

A prolonged election dispute could distract from US-backed counterterrorism efforts against al Qaeda and Islamic State affiliates in Somalia.

The Puntland forces involved in the recent clash have played a key role in the ongoing US-backed counterterrorism campaign the Islamic State Somalia Province (ISS), which may have already exploited a reduction in counterterrorism pressure in late 2025 and early 2026 to reconstitute.

Al Shabaab has also exploited the security vacuums created by past political disputes and could benefit from potential funding disruptions to AUSSOM, a vital African Union counterterrorism mission.

Kuwait has ratified a defense cooperation agreement signed with Pakistan in June 2023, publishing the approved text in the official gazette, Kuwait Al-Youm, on 26 July.

The pact covers military training, education, intelligence sharing, logistics, defense technology, research, military manufacturing, and electronic communications systems. A joint military committee will handle implementation, including joint exercises and official visits.

It runs for five years, renews automatically unless either government withdraws, and obliges both sides to protect classified material and settle disputes diplomatically.

📍 🇺🇦 🇷🇺 Clément Molin on X: I mapped 160 Ukrainian gas station that have recently been hit across Ukraine.

At least 15 have been hit in Zaporizhzhia, 19 in Sumy and 23 in Kharkiv. Russia remains unable to replicate Ukraine's mid-range campaign against trucks (less than 100 trucks hit since May, at least 20 km and more from the frontline).

Thus, they are targeting gas stations, with focus on key roads, mainly Kyiv-Kharkiv, Dnipro-Kharkiv and in the north-eastern part of the country. During my trip to Zaporizhzhia last week, I saw only 4 gas stations hit on the road leading to Dnipro, with most of the ones in the city starting to be covered by anti-drone nets.

The main Ukrainian challenge here is the organised campaign to cut logistics by strikes on gas station, especially for trucks. Any car can easily go into a city nearby to find gas, but a truck will face much more difficulties.
