According to press reports, Trump has exploded, slammed the table, and cursed with expletives in more than one meeting with senior national security officials.

The lack of progress in the war against Iran, the absence of a clear strategy, and even the lack of defined objectives for the war itself have been the source of his frustration.

Such a clear strategy, or whatever one wants to call it, never existed. As I wrote at the beginning of the conflict, they expected a war of just a few days based on reports that completely underestimated Iranian capabilities.

Sources speak of disagreement over the military options being presented and over the lack of unity on strategy. There are reports of tension between what the president wants l, -harder military pressure or a quick deal, -and what parts of the team and the commanders consider feasible or advisable.

This climate was already unhealthy after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth carried out a broad purge of the high command, removing or forcing into retirement more than 20 generals and admirals. The justification was not military; it was related to issues of loyalty and alignment with the vision of the new administration.

The fact is that Trump is bothered by the current situation and will have to make important decisions in the coming days.

📝 🇸🇦 🇾🇪 Saudi Arabia is preparing for a major military offensive against Yemen’s Houthis by sea and possibly by land, in an effort to break their pressure on Saudi oil exports through the southern Red Sea, The Guardian reported, citing Yemeni sources.

Saudi forces have reportedly begun withdrawing from eastern Yemen and concentrating troops for a possible assault on Houthi-controlled al-Bayda governorate in central Yemen. Riyadh is also seeking to organize a naval coalition to protect shipping in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait.

The preparations come after Saudi and U.S. strikes in Iraq killed at least 20 people, and as Saudi Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman held urgent talks with Donald Trump and JD Vance. The Guardian reported that Riyadh wants to show it will defend its oil industry but remains wary of a broader war with Iran.

🛢 🇺🇦 🇷🇺 Russian refineries hit by Ukrainian drone strikes have lost around 45% of production capacity overall

The Ukrainian campaign knocked out more than 30 and 45 per cent of Russia’s actual and nominal capacity, respectively, triggering the worst fuel crisis in the petrostate since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Most signs of the attacks at Russia’s top 10 largest refineries, including in Omsk, Moscow and Tuapse, remained visible from space weeks or even months after the last known attack, the FT analysis showed.

Even after refineries come back online, activity recovers slowly, according to Fabio Sabatini, a researcher at Sapienza University of Rome.

His team measured night-time radiance around 29 large Russian refineries between June 2022 and May 2026. They found that after a first strike, radiance fell by 30 per cent within 1km of the refinery and by up to 18 per cent within 5km. The decline lasted for more than 13 months for the facilities struck last year.

Kstovo, a refinery in Nizhny Novgorod, was struck by drones on May 18 and 20. It has remained offline since, according to thermal-infrared satellite imagery from Constellr, a German intelligence company. In the latest available shot, taken on July 18, its distillation unit still showed no heat signature.

Ukraine’s targeted campaign, aided by US and French intelligence, has helped trigger a severe fuel crisis in Russia, with sales restrictions in nearly every region and long queues at filling stations.

Russia had restored some refining capacity, helped by a resumption of operations at Omsk, said Daniel Evans, global head of fuels and refining at S&P Global Energy. But much capacity remains offline, making supply to Russia’s otherwise balanced domestic market “very challenging”, he added.

Satellite images show Russian refineries have expanded drone defences since 2022. But Ukraine’s repeated drone waves can overwhelm those defences.

“The protective methods were effective last year,” the businessman said. But while nets can catch one drone, “when three hit the same point, it is physically impossible” to stop them.
