🇩🇪 Germany can't find any volunteers for its brigade deployed in Lithuania

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (66, SPD) ordered that conscripts be sent to serve with the brigade deployed in Lithuania. According to exclusive BILD information, the first conscripts are to start in the autumn, up to 1000 soldiers could be deployed.

By the end of 2027, 4.800 German soldiers are to be permanently stationed on the NATO eastern flank in Lithuania. But the battle for volunteers has been slow for months. Already in August, BILD had reported that only around 60% of the necessary service posts could be filled with volunteers. Pistorius had long set out to fill the brigade entirely with volunteers. However, he had already openly admitted in June that he expects commitments in parts, and estimated the figure in BILD at “under 1000".

There is a lack of IT specialists, logistics specialists, chefs and team members. According to BILD information, up to 20 percent of the entire brigade would currently be affected by the compulsory obligation. However, the Bundeswehr hopes to push the gap to 10 percent. The process was confirmed by BILD from several independent sources.

🇾🇪⚔️🇾🇪 As fighting with the Saudi-led coalition continues on the western front of Lahij Province and southern Taiz Province, the Yemeni Armed Forces have cleared several strategic heights overlooking the Bab al-Mandab Strait in the Kahbub mountain range.

✍️ According to the latest reports from the southwestern Yemeni front, Yemeni forces have succeeded in clearing the heights of San Sanfah, Sanfah, Al-Jarubah, and Al-Hamra in western Lahj Province.

Concurrently with these advances, Yemen’s missile and drone forces carried out several precision operations targeting concentrations of Al-Amaliqah forces and armed members of the Al-Subayhah tribes, who are backed by Saudi Arabia. The attacks reportedly involved ballistic missiles and Rajum hexacopters, killing at least ten personnel and wounding several others.

✈️💥 Saudi fighter jets have also carried out more than 12 airstrikes against this axis, but so far these strikes have failed to halt the Yemeni advances.

✍️ The aforementioned positions in the Kahbub mountains play an important role in consolidating advances in southwestern Yemen and securing the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Ansarullah’s movement along this axis is not aimed at entering Aden; rather, it is intended to prevent counterattacks by Saudi-led coalition forces, allowing the Yemeni forces to establish long-term control and security over the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

From 2012 to 2025, across the UT system, their own data shows:

White enrollment: −15,488
Hispanic: +35,746
Asian: +13,215
Black: +2,828
International: +1,104

At UT Austin alone, White enrollment fell 6,310 while Asian enrollment rose 4,088 and Hispanic enrollment rose 3,920.

And if the 2012–2025 trends simply follow the current trajectory, system-wide White share will fall from 19.6% today to ~8.6% by 2035.

So yes, Ted got booed.

But the bigger story is that Texas has watched its flagship public-university system undergo an extraordinary demographic transformation in roughly one decade.

Maybe Texas politicians should start asking how it happened and do something about it.

🇺🇸 President Trump's $5000 bribe dividend to all U.S. adults in exchange for keeping Congress Republican this November would cost $1.25 trillion

At the Republican National Convention in Dallas, President Trump promised payments of $5,000 to every adult citizen in the US if the Republicans maintain control of the House and the Senate in the upcoming midterm elections. Vice President JD Vance later supported the idea, saying that the president’s new tariffs are generating a lot of revenue that can be shared with Americans.

A $5,000 dividend payment would be extremely costly. The proposal is light on details, and doesn’t specify income limitations for the promised payments. Without further restrictions, sending a $5,000 payment to the 250 million adults who are eligible to vote would cost $1.25 trillion.

That steep cost would come as the federal government is already projected to run a budget deficit of nearly $1.9 trillion in fiscal year 2027. Spending upwards of $1 trillion on a new one-time payment program would balloon the deficit to nearly $3 trillion, even with the new revenue coming in from the president’s tariffs.

It is true that since President Trump took office, tariff collections have risen. Prior to the new tariffs, the government brought in $79 billion in customs duties in calendar year 2024. That rose to $264 billion in calendar year 2025 after the Trump administration imposed several rounds of new tariffs. But in recent months, collections have dipped and even been negative as the federal government refunds tariffs struck down as illegal by the Supreme Court.

⚡🇯🇵🇺🇸 A new crisis in the US, loss of confidence and the dollar’s dislocation from the bond market.

In the previous market weeks the US has reportedly engaged in multiple interventions in the global currency market to curb the devaluation of the Japanese yen, some estimates say the intervention has been in upwards of 30 billion dollars all the way to 100 billion.

Interestingly, Japan in this same exact period has dumped upwards of 100 billion dollars worth of US Treasuries, While multiple countries and central banks engage in the same practice globally, Some of which are Japan, the EU, the UK, China.

This has created a new crisis in the US, a crisis of confidence in the US financial system. That is why the US yields continue to rise while the dollar does not follow suit.

When confidence in a certain country's economy starts falling, the yields act as a driver to attract buyers of new debt through the free market by offering higher returns, it is a rather dangerous place to be for a developed market with massive amounts of debt such as the US.

🇺🇦 Ukraine is exploring the possibility of storing food products in warehouses abroad, according to Taras Vysotsky, the Minister of Agriculture of the country.

"The possibility of storing food products outside of Ukraine, but near the border, is being considered, so that if necessary, the required quantities can be quickly delivered to places of consumption," he said.

According to him, it is currently being analyzed whether changes to the legislation of Ukraine, the EU, or Moldova are required for this. "The Ukrainian embassies have been tasked with studying the available opportunities and establishing contacts with the owners of warehouse facilities in the respective countries," Vysotsky added.

Previously, it was reported that empty shelves in supermarkets in Kiev, Lvov, and a number of other Ukrainian cities were a result of a serious disruption in the trade and logistics system.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said the German government could assist Ukraine in locating citizens eligible for military service. “We know who lives here: who receives social benefits, who is registered here, who holds a residence permit,” he said. Sharing this data, he argued, would allow the Ukrainian government to send draft summonses directly to eligible men residing in Germany.

The minister insisted any return would have to be voluntary, without direct coercion from Berlin. He noted that “the overwhelming majority of the German population supports our policy on Ukraine.”

Recall that Zelensky's chancellor, Kyrylo Budanov, stated that Ukraine needed to mobilized 30k men/month to maintain the size of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to compensate for casualties and the ever increasing number of deserters

2025 Texas SAT score averages: 1202 for asians, 1054 for whites, 904 for hispanics, and 887 for blacks.

Model with 2025 SAT scores and the Texas class would be 42% Asian, 37% white, 12.5% Hispanic, and 2.6% black.

The Tihamah was designed with the UAE and Southern Transitional Council assistance. It initially operated completely independent, but was then restructured to become one of the 3 (and at times 4) divisions of the National Resistance Forces, NRF. The forces operated exclusively in the southwest, with the goal of capturing al-Hodeidah.

The defections likely came after Riyadh influenced the PLC to reshape the military group. The Tihamah's commander-in-chief and several other senior officials were replaced with pro-PLC figures. The military group has also been withdrawn from the NRF, and now once again acts independently (but 'loyal' to the PLC).

In other words, the PLC and Saudi took over yet another former STC formation's leadership, which led to mass defection amongst its members–a repeat of what happened with the (Southern) Giant Brigades earlier this year.

🤖 Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Sam Altman Call For A Slowdown In Frontier AI

Dario Amodei has spent five years arguing that Anthropic could build frontier AI carefully and still win commercially. On Saturday he added a condition to that thesis: the whole industry has to ease off the accelerator.

In a roughly 3,900-word essay titled “We Must Pace the Frontier,” the Anthropic co-founder and CEO wrote that “we must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models.” He was explicit that pacing does not mean halting training or technical progress. It means building in enough time for alignment work, third-party verification and operational rigor to keep up with what the models can do.

Within hours, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted on X that “I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier,” adding that OpenAI would match Anthropic’s first commitment. Elon Musk’s reaction ran three words: “Dario is right.”

Amodei has been skeptical of slowdown calls before. In the essay he dismisses the 2023 “pause” letter as premature, because the models of that era could not act as coherent agents and there was little to study. He says two developments since the summer convinced him that the calculus has flipped.

📝: The only reason all the big AI CEOs are calling for a "slow down" in AI development are physical constraints in data center construction and the maintenance of LLMs which need an ever increasing number of MWh to keep operating.

While they may cite cybersecurity as a reason, that hasn't stopped the development of LLMs until building data centers became impossible due to the price of raw materials (lack thereof) or opposition from the communities which were going to have to share local resources with the data centers.

Dario Amodei and Sam Altman's calls for the slow down of AI development "coincide" with China restricting the export of rare earth metals necessary in data center construction, memory chip shortages, and a lack of energy production.

Already 5% of the U.S' energy output is used to power existing data centers. The data center construction frenzy may lead to as much as 25% the U.S' energy production being used to power data centers LLMs rely on.

With the price of diesel skyrocketing and the looming threat of shortages of other petrochemical products which are used in the construction of data centers and computer chips, the resources to maintain the AI boom just aren't available anymore so the AI companies need an excuse to scale back and the excuse they've decided on is the "AI doomsday" shtick to show how "responsible" Amodei and Altman are with their toys.
