🇺🇸❌🇮🇳 Trump’s 50% Tariff on India Takes Effect
As of today, nearly all Indian imports to the U.S. are subject to a 50% tariff, half of it imposed as retaliation for India’s continued purchase of Russian oil.
The move comes just weeks after Indian officials believed a compromise was possible. Instead, Trump finalized one of his harshest trade penalties yet, targeting a country that had been repositioning itself as an alternative to Chinese manufacturing.
The tariffs hit sectors that support millions of Indian workers, textiles, machinery, chemicals, and gems, and threaten decades of investment by U.S. firms operating offshore in India.
Vice President JD Vance described the action as “secondary tariffs on India, to try to make it harder for the Russians to get rich from their oil economy.” The decision has already disrupted trade flows and sent a message that geopolitical loyalty now comes with an economic price tag.
Modi, under pressure ahead of elections, has stopped short of naming Trump directly, but has invoked language of economic self-reliance and national dignity, signaling a shift in posture as ties with Washington fray: “No matter how much pressure is put on us, India will prevail.”

🇩🇪 The Merz Comeback
German democracy didn’t crown Merz — corporate power did. Friedrich Merz is now Chancellor of Germany, a comeback built on networks far outside traditional politics. His rise began in 2022 with a CDU landslide, but his real chance came after Scholz’s coalition collapsed in late 2024.
The February 2025 election gave Merz just 28.5% — hardly a majority. Even worse, he failed the first chancellor vote, something unseen in post-war history. Yet hours later, 15 MPs switched, handing him victory.
Those votes didn’t flip on ideology. They flipped on influence — Merz’s BlackRock connections turned politics into business. Many now wonder if this was democracy’s choice at all.

🇺🇸🇺🇦 WSJ: Pentagon Has Quietly Blocked Ukraine’s Long-Range Missile Strikes on Russia
Since spring, the Pentagon has blocked Ukraine from using U.S.-made long-range ATACMS missiles to strike inside Russia. Each launch requires high-level approval—none have been granted.
The same restrictions apply to UK-supplied Storm Shadows that rely on U.S. intel. Trump’s policy reversed Biden’s 2024 decision allowing such strikes.
The decision stems from a review mechanism developed by Pentagon policy chief Elbridge Colby. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has final authority.
⚠️ This week, the U.S. approved sale of 3,350 ERAM cruise missiles (range: 150–280 miles), mostly paid for by Europe. These, too, require Pentagon clearance.

🌍🗺️The African Union has backed a campaign to end the use by governments and international organisations of the 16th-century Mercator map of the world in favour of one that more accurately displays Africa's size.
Created by cartographer Gerardus Mercator for navigation, the projection distorts continent sizes, enlarging areas near the poles like North America and Greenland while shrinking Africa and South America.
"It might seem to be just a map, but in reality, it is not," AU Commission deputy chairperson Selma Malika Haddadi told Reuters, saying the Mercator fostered a false impression that Africa was "marginal", despite being the world's second-largest continent by area, with over a billion people. The AU has 55 member states.
Such stereotypes influence media, education and policy, she said.
Criticism of the Mercator map is not new, but the 'Correct The Map' campaign led by advocacy groups Africa No Filter and Speak Up Africa has revived the debate, urging organisations to adopt the 2018 Equal Earth projection, which tries to reflect countries' true sizes.
"The current size of the map of Africa is wrong," Moky Makura, executive director of Africa No Filter, said. "It's the world's longest misinformation and disinformation campaign, and it just simply has to stop."
Fara Ndiaye, co-founder of Speak Up Africa, said the Mercator affected Africans' identity and pride, especially children who might encounter it early in school.
"We're actively working on promoting a curriculum where the Equal Earth projection will be the main standard across all (African) classrooms," Ndiaye said, adding she hoped it would also be the one used by global institutions, including Africa-based ones.
As the multi-polar world emerges, many of the colonial legacies have to be uprooted to set stage for the raise of the global south. And as one of the major poles in a new multi polar world, Africa is deciding to wake up from centuries of Western domination and hegemony that has strangled life out of it's billion population.

🇷🇺 25km from Poland’s border, Russia is building what may become the world’s largest radio-electronic intelligence complex.
New satellite imagery reveals rapid construction progress in Kaliningrad, where a massive circular antenna array is taking shape.
Western analysts believe it’s designed for strategic electronic surveillance, signals intelligence, and long-range detection.
If completed, the site could become a major node in Russia’s military sensing and countermeasure architecture with direct implications for NATO’s eastern flank.
