According to MarineTraffic data, the ship with a Malawian flag first attempted to cross the strait on April 13 but was forced to turn back. A new attempt was made in the evening, and by early Tuesday morning, the route was successfully completed.
In addition, on Monday, another oil tanker, Elpis, flying the flag of the Comoros Islands, passed through the strait after the blockade came into effect. The vessel was under US sanctions in 2025 for transporting Iranian oil "as part of Iran's shadow fleet".

This was reported by The New York Times, citing sources familiar with the operation.
The ships were expected to demonstrate that the passage was secure—potentially the first step toward a mine-clearing mission. Instead, they withdrew after an Iranian reconnaissance drone showed up. The drone was reportedly shot down.
According to sources, the two U.S. Navy vessels moved out of the Gulf of Oman, entered the strait, and then reversed course. While U.S. officials said the drone posed no direct threat, the Navy chose not to proceed under active Iranian surveillance.

Russian Muslims have called on Saudi Arabia to convene a peace summit on Iran. Albir Krganov, head of the Spiritual Assembly of Muslims of Russia, made the appeal back in March, formally asking Riyadh to organize a council and discuss the future of peace at the level of heads of Muslim states.
The initiative reflects a growing conviction within Russia's Muslim leadership that the path to de-escalation runs not through Western diplomatic channels but through the Islamic world's own institutional weight.
The timing is significant. With the US-brokered ceasefire already fraying and the Strait of Hormuz still partially blockaded, traditional diplomacy has visibly stalled.
