You never see Edward Norton’s face Kingdom of Heaven. He plays King Baldwin IV entirely behind a silver mask, and he asked to be left out of the credits so nobody would know it’s him underneath. The one time the mask comes off, after Baldwin is gone, his face is so ravaged by leprosy that you still wouldn’t know it was him. It’s all voice and the way he carries himself. The real Baldwin IV is the part that’s hard to believe. He became king of Jerusalem at 13, led his army into the field at 16 and routed Saladin with a fraction of the men, and passed away at 24, ruling the entire time while living with leprosy. Barely any screen time, and he owns the film.

We have been sold a lie.
It’s there in many religions, and it’s been amplified by Hollywood movies and popular culture. It says that good will always win. In the battle between light and dark, light will always shine through. And according to the philosopher Emil Cioran, this is all nonsense.
Cioran argues that there is no grand cosmic battle between good and evil. In fact, they aren’t even the same thing. Because good can only protect or sustain what already exists, but everything that we need comes from greed, power, status, and the voracious consumption of our darker nature.
And it goes deeper even than history, because Cioran argues that even being alive means we have to commit a host of crimes to get through the day. We have to take constantly, we take up space, and we take up oxygen. We have to eat something that was once alive. We have to consume, consume, consume, and for what? Our living means that something else has to die. To live is to grow, and to grow is to take.
This is just how things are. The world is set up for entropy, for collapse, and decay. It is set up to be a zero-sum competition. And so if I live, and if I win, means you die, and you lose. The world is not about light versus dark or good versus evil, because the battle itself is evil. Suffering, misfortune, and hardship are wired into the fabric of the universe.
